Another dope Underground Hip-Hop track from Camp Lo called “Coolie High”. An oldie but a goodie.

Camp Lo is an American hip hop duo, formed in 1995, which hails from The Bronx, New York. The duo consists of rappers Sonny Cheeba (Salahadeen Wilds) and Geechi Suede (Saladine Wallace), both of Muslim upbringing.

They named themselves ‘Camp Lo’ to separate themselves from Atlanta-based rapper Cee-Lo of Goodie Mob. Initially signed with Profile Records, Camp Lo made their first appearance in 1996 on The Great White Hype soundtrack, with their single, “Coolie High”. The smooth party song was a minor hit, peaking at #25 on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart. Their first major exposure came with the release of their second single, the upbeat, horn driven “Luchini”, otherwise known as “This Is It”.

Grand Theft Auto (GTA) has always been known for having great music. San Andreas is most well known for having some of the best hip-hop music on its radio stations. Below is a full list of the radio stations of GTA San Andreas and the songs that get played on them. Also included are brief summaries of the type of music played on the radio station. So if you don’t like the style of music you don’t have to read the list. Radio Los Santos is most well known for being the San Andreas Hip-Hop Station.
GTA San Andreas Song List

San Andreas Radio Stations

The soundtrack of the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is set in 1992 in the fictional west coast state of San Andreas. The setting is basically California (the San Andreas fault runs strait through California) and the west coast hip-hop that dominates the video game is that of Los Angeles. The radio stations do not just play music however, there are talk shows, news, weather and a variety of rock, rap and other genres of music. Many of the songs interpolate or sample other songs which feature in this or other GTA titles, such as Ice Cube’s “Check Yo Self”, which samples “The Message”, which was featured in Vice City or “Weekend” which appears in its original form on Paradise FM in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.

The radio can be heard when driving in vehicles in San Andreas. You have the option to change the station to whatever you like but when you first get in, the station will be set to the type of station that the driver would have been listening to. So if you jack a car from an old lady she will be listening to old ass lady radio, not G Rap Radio. Some vehicles in the game don’t have radios, so don’t try to bump the latest early 90’s gangsta rap in a police cruiser, ambulance, tractor, bicycle, forklift, or cheap ass boat. Radio stations, or some of the songs featured on them, can also be heard in the background in certain locations, such as bars, clothing stores, clubs, casinos, and safehouse wardrobes. On the Xbox and PC versions of the game you are allowed to create your own custom radio stations by importing you own music.

Portland’s Hempstalk 2011

Portland’s annual Hempstalk Festival in Portland, Oregon is one of the largest events in the pot friendly state which advocates the decriminalization of marijuana for medicinal, industrial, and recreational use. The Hemp and Cannabis Foundation was founded in 2005, and since then the festival has taken place the weekend after Labor Day in September every year. The event features food vendors, live music, guest speakers and information booths. This public event has always been free to attend.

Hempstalk Portland, Oregon

According to Paul Stanford, founder and presenting sponsor of the event, “Hempstalk is about the many uses of agricultural hemp fiber, oil, protein, fuel and medicine. We are working to end adult cannabis prohibition, allow adults to grow their own and license the legal sale of psychoactive cannabis to adults. We believe that hemp will save the Earth’s biosphere with the adoption of hemp seed for bio-diesel fuel, which will solve the energy and world hunger problems, and stop deforestation when hemp fiber is used for paper and building materials. We support the Oregon Cannabis Tax Act of 2012 to implement this. We shall overcome!”

Ear To Ear by Brother Ali

This is another really profound song from the highly acclaimed underground hip hop artist, Brother Ali. He has really came into his own and has made his mark in hip-hop forever. Included further down the page are a review of Bad Habitat Music and why we bring you the great music you have here, The Lyrics for Ear to Ear from Brother Ali, and a few other top underground rappers that you should check out if you are not already familiar with them. The lyrics to Ear To Ear are listed below.

Ear To Ear Lyrics

I shed my ex-wife kept my son with me
Now me smiling ear to ear now that’s something to see, shit

[Chorus:]
I said my life, and my God and my songs
Good Lord Ya’ll
I said my life, and my God and my songs

[Verse 1:]
Man no question use to always know that I was crazy
Guess it’s safe to say I came a long way baby
Mama throwing dishes at my ex-wife bitching at me
never did envision daddy could be this happy, shit
To me not broke is rich
Got a two bedroom a new sofa to sit
For the first time ain’t go to Good Will or St. Steven’s
But IKEA put that boy together last weekend
Out in NY I met a fly Puerto Rican
Dimed out sales girl Victoria’s Secret
Took her on a train to Pennsylvaina for a weekend
that’s eighteen months ago dog, guess where she been?
Frozen tundra chillin with boy wonder
Done discovered love like a mother fucker
I tried to warn my baby that the winters no joke
She said “Big dick daddy I’ll just get me your coat”
Goddamn

[Chorus:]
I said my life, and my God and my songs
Good Lord Ya’ll
I said my life, and my God and my songs
Good Lord Ya’ll
Said I’m gonna do it for you
I’m gonna do it for you

[Verse 2:]
Feeling fly as hell right about now
I done pushed a whole heap of hell out of my house
Any orphanage will clove and feed a kid
but I raise my little man teach him to live
That’s why he’s 4 years old and can read like he was 6
Behave and recite the Qur’an in Arabic
Eat healthy, knows all the words to Laddy Daddy
Taught him to use the potty without his Mummy
It’s three years away I ain’t the least bit nervous
I feel like I’ma do it real big in my thirties
Honestly love everybody in my circle
Been with me since the scrimmage and the dress rehearsal
Oh let me tell you that my sweet potato pie
Will curl your toenails and bring tears to your eyes
And all corny bullshit aside
your boys smiling for real the first time in my life

[Chorus:]
I said my life, and my God and my songs
Good Lord Ya’ll
I said my life, my God and my songs
Good Lord Ya’ll
Said I’m gonna do it for you
I’m gonna do it for you

Music of NBA 2K11

Presenting Michael Jordan as this year’s cover athlete was a poor decision on the part of the Developers. I feel that a current all star is more suitable than someone who doesn’t play any more. Whats next? Larry Bird on the cover? There are however several new game play modes and updates. The graphics have greatly improved. An example of the new graphics updates is shown to the right. NBA 2K11 builds on its reputation of combining young up-and-coming musicians with well-established artists into the soundtrack for the game. The music for this game will work perfect for Basketball Mixes while your playing hoops. The NBA 2K11 Soundtrack is off the hook. You will definitely get down to the tunes on the track list above.

Jason Argent, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports stated that “NBA 2K is the basketball game that everyone plays, from NBA athletes to celebrities to music artists. Snoop has been a long time fan of the NBA 2K series and because music is such an integral part to the gameplay experience, it was a perfect fit for this year’s title – one of the greatest rappers making an exclusive track for the greatest NBA game,”. He went on to say “With NBA 2K11 we hope to exceed expectations by featuring both an impressive array of established artists like Big Boi, Kid Cudi and Drake who definitely balance the hoop action, alongside emerging talent, such as the winners of our national MC/producer contest.”

B-Roy has had a tough year this 2010-11 season. Hopefully next year he will be healthier and prove that he is an all star in the league.

Indie Band Website Design

This is focused on indie hip-hop artists but applies to any genre of music. All independent musicians should read this.

Band Website

Your bands website has to be good for you to be taken seriously. Not having a band website will immediately make you look less professional. The website needs to have an easily accessible music player, promo pictures and upcoming concert information. Many companies offer Band Website Design but not all provide the same quality.

Store

You have to be able to buy something on the site. CD’s, MP3’s, Free Downloads, T-Shirts, Stickers, etc. More about merchandise later.

Social Media Integration

Connecting your website to your Facebook, Twitter, (Insert Social Network) profile and vice versa. Providing “share” buttons for various social bookmarking sites will get you a ton of free links. Links to your band site is GOOD.

Music Player

Your music player should have up-to-date music that is as high quality mastered as you have. Don’t present unfinished products.

Embedded Video

Embed Videos of concerts, recording sessions, freestyles, etc. on your Bands Website. Recording massive amounts of material and sharing it on Youtube, your website, Twitter, Facebook, etc. is a good way to get a lot more traffic to your site and more fans buying music.

Concert Calender

Having a calender of your upcoming shows is vital for a successful indie hip-hop artist marketing campaign.

Slideshows/Galleries

Upload all your pictures into slideshows and galleries on your band website. Some companies offer custom editable websites that allow you to do this kind of thing quite easily.

Facebook Marketing

For Independent Hip-Hop Artists

Facebook is one of the most valuable tools for an indie hip hop artist right now. Facebook Marketing can be a huge pain in the neck. If you have time to do it yourself it can pay off big time, if you have money to invest in your campaign the better it will work for you.

Band Profile

Create a band profile and update it with as many pictures, videos and songs that you can. Suggest to as many friends as you have and get the ball rolling if you haven’t already. If you have a facebook band profile you might consider banner ads.

Banner Ads

Facebook banner ads can be targeted to city, state, interests in music, age, gender, etc. Targeting is great for upcoming concerts that need to be advertised out of town. Also this is a great way to target peoples interests in similar music. This is a great way to increase the number of fans you have on your page. More fans equals more traffic to your band site which equals more revenue from album sales. Band Placement Companies like GME can do Facebook banners as well as banners on other networks like major news sites, music sites and more.

Landing Page

Some companies will build you a custom landing page that tells people to like your page and some even have music players. These are very valuable to your online marketing campaign.

Music Player

Having a music player on your Facebook profile will give you a big boost in fan base. Combined with banner ads, social media integration with your bands website and regular posting your social media buzz will be loud.

Branding

Logo

Make sure you have a good logo designed. If you have a cheap looking logo you wont get any real respect. Have a graffiti artist or a Marketing Company design you a logo.

Social Media Networking

Create a profile on as many social bookmarking and social networking sites as you can. Post a few links to your site and forget about most of them. Take 4 or 5 more popular sites and hit them hard. Make sure you stay up-to-date on a few good social networking sites. Make sure to send your band site a lot of links. Post your name on lists all over the web that people have compiled of their favorite artists of your similar genre. For example Bad Habitat Music features a post about the Top 100 Underground Rappers.

Marketing Materials

Stickers, Flyers, Posters, which is the most bang for your buck.

Handbills (Flyers) have been used in hip-hop marketing forever. But how well do they really work? These can be used in excess and if not implemented properly can be a big waste, financially and environmentally. They create a lot of garbage and are outlawed in some counties because of litter problems. Flyers are best used by handing them out at shows, outside of shows, placing them on cars, tables, etc at venues which have shows of a similar genre to your style of underground hip-hop. Hand out a lot of Flyers where other hip-hop fans gather. Don’t just go down the street and hand them all out outside of a corner store. I have found the most success in sticker marketing. Stickers last a lot longer than flyers and they build up more long term buzz than handbills. Flyers are great for promoting shows, but stickers are king for overall promotion.

Merchandise like T-Shirts and Hats can go a long way. Getting fitted hats (New Era 59Fifty’s) with your logo on them will be a big hit among hip-hop fans. Getting a good deal on the production of the product is important. The markup on the gear can’t be too high. If the shirt costs you $5 to make sell it for $10 not $20+ you will sell more and make more with a lower price point on your merchandise. T-Shirts that have cool graphics, logo, etc are important also. This goes back to making sure you have a catchy logo that is something your fan base would be comfortable putting on their body for everyone to see.

Online Advertising Agency Total Market Exposure offers the above services at great prices for independent hip hop artists. Look to spend anywhere from $500 to $5000 on a successful campaign. It depends on how aggressive you want to be in your marketing campaign. I say “great” not “greatest” because I dont think they are including the full hip-hop gambit. I would have included a number of other artists. Bad Habitat Music and Surreal Music have posted a number of lists of the best underground rappers, many of which are spurred by youtube videos posted by someone I don’t know. Usually we just review their list and suggest improvements or other contenders for the lists. These posts include videos of some of top underground hip hop artists best songs.

Like Nutsie we feature Amazon and CD Universe as affiliates on our site. They have really good deals on really good independent underground hip hop artists and we support indie music. We hope you support independent hip hop as well. Science has proven that indie music is better than big label music.

My list would have included a little bit more West Coast Rappers from the 90’s and a few more modern underground hip-hop artists including more progressive rappers. This list is also misleading. It says Best 100 Hip-Hop Artists but it doesn’t include any Graffiti Artists, Dancers, Beatboxers, or DJ’s. It doesn’t even have DJ Quik who is definitely deserving of this list.

I recently stumbled upon a question some ignorant fool posted about hip-hop. He stated stated that if a rapper does not blow up in the mainstream that “something is wrong” and that underground rappers must not want “success” in the industry. To this simple minded drone “artists” like Lil Wayne and Drake are lyricists and have big fan bases because they are really good musically. Their success having nothing to do with their style of music. Which in my circle, represents something more along the lines of “the systematic destruction of the black community” (BET, Mainstream Hip-Hop, Materialism, Drake, Lil Wayne, all the same thing). So read what this guy has to say about successful underground rappers and post your comments below.

Do “underground” rappers not want success?

I see alot of people on here saying how Wayne or Drake are horrible rappers and that you only listen to this underground rapper or	that. Just because someone has a huge fanbase and their music gets played on the radio doesn’t mean they aren’t good rappers lyrically. It’s okay to be underground when you first start putting out mixtapes but if you’re still underground after like 10 years something is wrong. You can call it not selling out and doing whatever your label tells you but what’s the point of sticking to your principles by writing “real” music when your work gets overlooked.

And I’m not only talking about Drake or Wayne, there are mainstream rappers that are GOOD rappers. And there are also some horrible ones. I know it’s all about what you like and completely your own opinion.

But. . .anybody that says that Drake, Wayne, Nicki, Wiz, Kanye, or Jay-Z’s lyrics aren’t real and cleaver are out of their mind. Theres no way you can’t find any truth or understanding in what they say. There are PLENTY of rappers that I don’t care for but I would never call their words garbage. Anyone who says that about ANY of the following must have never actally sat down and tried to to listen them.

I know I’m gonna catch hell for this but I just had to say it. I’m soo sick of seeing Jedi Mind Tricks this and Mortal Technique that (and Wu Tang Clan. They were good and not underground but damn). Like really? You seriously play that old sh*t loud in your car? Im not saying if it’s new it’s better but come on now.

Just saying. . .

I’d LOVE to read your feedback.

Successful Underground Rapper

Exhibit A

Brother Ali

Brother Ali tours the States, Canada, etc. Pretty much anywhere that hip-hop fans exist. As an underground artist he is very successful, selling CD’s online, mp3, and in local record stores near you. Touring makes good money, so do studio albums that sell thousands of copies. I guess what needs to be taken into consideration is the difference between the meaning of the word success. I believe that success means achieving goals, acquiring wealth as a form of security for my loved ones and myself. The fool that posted the statement shown above has no clue what success really means. He thinks success is millions of dollars. I think that it means that you are more successful when you do it well and don’t sacrifice your integrity or make shitty ass fake albums like Drake and Lil Waynes bitch asses.

The following is an excerpt from an article talking about hip hop record labels and artist relationships. Also featured below is a video of a fast rapping underground artist. Worth checking out for sure, its pretty dope. As usual we appreciate you visiting and we hope you find it interesting. Peace.

Hip hop record labels are the companies that sponsor and produce the music that you love to hear. Hip hop is one of the hottest types of music on the market today and that is due at least in part to the advertisement and promotion of these artists by their hip hop record labels. So, we can thank them for bringing the artists we love to the forefront in music, but that is not all that they do. In fact, the hip hop record labels play a large part in the production of the music itself.

In hip hop music, the producer or the hip hop record label is responsible for much more. In fact, they often are responsible for composing the music along with arranging it. They often times create what is called an instrumental track or the beat of the music. Then, artists will often work with them to finish the recordings making them their own in their own way. But, there are still those hip hop record labels featuring producers who do it in the traditional way of supervising a team of musicians. One example of this is Dr. Dre…

While we are proud to be one of these excellent sources of information on the underground hip hop music scene, art and culture, we feel that it is important that you have all of the most up-to-date information on current events and new underground hip hop music.

World of Underground Hip Hop

This, budding hip hop blog has quickly risen in the ranks and become one of the more popular underground hip hop blogs on the web. Featuring appearances from many underground hip hop well-known’s such as MF DOOM the blog isn’t as ground breaking as some other sites but it has a wide variety of new underground hip hop music to choose from. World of Underground Hip Hop (WUHH?) is one underground hip hop blog that I check pretty frequently to stay up on current events.

Featuring album reviews such as D-M.A.U.B.: “Y’all Funny” and Independent Hip Hop Artist: PROPHETIC in the month of April, Indie Hip Hop shows love to many struggling independent underground hip hop artists. It is a great forum to be seen and heard. It is also a great place to find new underground hip hop music. Portlands own Serge Severe was featured as recently as March.

(Portland, Oregon) Independent hip hop artist Serge Severe delivers this heater titled “No Bitin’ Allowed” feat. Luck One and Cool Nutz.
Indie Hip Hop is a great place to find new, fresh underground hip hop music. In addition to covering new, up and comers, Indie Hip Hop honors the greats of previous eras in hip hop. Props to Indie Hip Hop for keeping it real and representing the underground scene properly.

Many are compiling their own videos on Youtube in anticipation of the release. One thing is for certain. When we finally here the full version of Warren G’s Nate Dogg Tribute Song, we will miss one of the greatest Hip Hop Singers of all time.

Warren G and Nate Dogg are as West Coast as the Pacific Ocean. Nate has moved on to a better place and Warren G wanted to remember him by recording a tribute song called “This Is Dedicated To You”

Warren G Pays Tribute To Nate Dogg With New Song

West Coast rapper Nate Dogg, born Nathaniel Hale, passed away in mid-March due to complications from multiple strokes and now his friend and collaborator Warren G plans to honor the late rapper in a new tribute track titled ‘This is Dedicated To You.’

Nate Dogg was famously featured on Warren G’s 1994 song ‘Regulate,’ which became his most popular single to date. On ‘This is Dedicated To You,’ Warren reminisces about the painful memories of seeing Nate Dogg in rehabilitation following his strokes, rhyming, “Life is such a trip, I know the world is full of madness/ Relearning how to walk and talk again, I can’t imagine.”

He also takes a jab at unnamed rappers who he feels have attempted to imitate Nate’s unique style, adding, “What the hell is going on? N—-s been biting songs/ Hell nah, that ain’t Nate Dogg!” So far, Warren G has issued no official premiere date for the track, which is intended for a digital release.

Following Nate Dogg’s death last month, Warren G revealed in an interview that the hit song ‘Regulate’ was actually recorded in a closet.

“I had an apartment on Long Beach Boulevard and San Antonio, and I didn’t have no furniture,” Warren G explained to DJ Skee. “I had dog s–t all over the floor, and I had two bedrooms. In one of my bedrooms, all I had was studio equipment. I did the sample, plugged in my VCR into the MPC60, sampled [the music], and after I finished it, I called Nate, and said ‘Nate, I got a record I think we should do, and go back-and-forth on it. I think it’d be dope.’ He came over, he heard it, and was like, ‘Damn!’ So from there, we hooked up a mic in the closet, and I called my engineer, Greg. He came over and recorded it, and there it is.”

Warren G released his most recent album, ‘The G-Files,’ in 2009, and has not announced plans to release a follow-up as yet. He paid tribute to Nate Dogg during this year’s SXSW Festival at the annual Respect the West party with Snoop Dogg.

Here’s what others are reporting around the web.

Last month, we saw Warren G break down in tears at Nate Dogg’s funeral. Nate Dogg, who died March 15, grew up with Warren G. Along with Snoop Dogg, they formed rap group 213 and became known as the architects of the West Coast rap sound. Warren G’s biggest hit, “Regulate,” had Nate Dogg on vocals. Today Warren G released a tribute song called “This is Dedicated to You” featuring Latoya Williams.
Check out the 30 minute snippet here; the lyrics start out saying, “All these albums we drop will never be the same without your voice on ‘em … Choked up, smoked out, riding to these melodies.”

Warren G told TMZ he actually recorded the track a few months before Nate died, because he battled serious health issues for years. He added, “It’s a song I’m just doing for my homeboy, letting people know how I feel.” All profits from “Dedicated” will go to a trust fund for Nate Dogg’s kids.

Many music podcasts are available online for downloading; if one wanted to find, for instance, a hip hop mix podcast, there are a few sites available to help. The first possibility would be to go directly to a site which creates one and subscribe to it using a podcast client which automatically checks the feed for new episodes and downloads them for the user. If, however, one did not know of any hip hop mix podcast sites, or simply wanted to find new podcast sites, the best possibility would be to check a podcast directory, a list of podcasts that can be browsed.

Hip hop mix podcasts could easily be found at one of these podcast directories. A podcast directory stores lists of podcasts which have been submitted to the site, and categorizes them by genre, type of podcast, region, and other meta data. To find a hip hop mix podcast, visiting a podcast directory and checking under music podcasts, and then under hip hop music would find many podcasts which play that type of music.

The hip hop mix podcast could then be subscribed to by inputting the feed address listed into one of the many podcast clients. The music will come in episodes, the name for each downloadable portion of a podcast. Some of these podcasts may feature independent artists, musicians trying to break into the music industry who have chosen podcasting as a way of sharing their music and gaining a following. Others may be remixes of popular songs that have been changed in some way to give a different feel to the music. Often, the artists may already be established, though, and they still see podcasting as a way to introduce themselves to a larger audience. They may grant rights to pay certain hip hip songs to a podcaster, letting them play the music as part of their mix distribution while requesting a link to a site where more information can be learned about the artists and music can be purchased. Artists that have done this include alias, edan, outerspace, RA the rugged man, roots manuva, and outer space.

A large number of podcasts featuring hip hop mix podcasts are actually radio stations, however. These broadcasters have found that podcasting their shows and selections is an easy way to reach more listeners and gain a greater audience. These podcasters can reach more people easier and cheaper than they can by playing hip hop mix music over the airwaves in their local areas. Playing hip hop music over the internet is probably the way many future artists will do their work, and there are many ways available even now that they can do so and make a profit. For instance, some podcasts are designed to work on a payment basis. A hip hop artist who wished to share his music could charge for addition to the feed list, then issue a unique feed address to the user, allowing them to hear new pieces of hip hop music released. The hip hop music file could even be designed so it could not be copied and used by another user at a different computer, to ensure that the artist could

Hip hop music is part of hip hop culture, which began in the Bronx, in New York City in the 1970s, primarily among African Americans and Latin Americans, with considerable Jamaican influence. (two other elements are breakdancing and graffiti art).

The music may be based around either live or produced music, with a clearly defined drum beat (almost always in 4/4 time signature), presented either with or without vocal accompaniment.

Hip hop music was an outlet and a “voice” for disenfranchised youth as the culture reflected the social, economic and political realities of their lives. The music was popular there at least as far back as the late 1970s. The first Philadelphia hip hop record was “Rhythm Talk,” by Jocko Henderson in 1979, and the New York Times dubbed Philadelphia the “Graffiti Capital of the World” in 1971.

Rap is mostly influenced by hip hop. You can say that hip hop is synonymous with rap. As rap is all rhythm, very little melody, and virtually no harmony and is generally written by the younger generation for the younger generation — providing a universal voice for the young. In other words, hip hop music is a musical genre typically consisting of a rhythmic vocal style called rap which is accompanied with backing beats.

Underground Hip-Hop Music

Hip hop music is further a genre of music typically consisting of a rhythmic style of speaking called rap over backing beats performed on a turntable by a DJ. The Music has really gone a long way since the days of bboys spinning on cardboard boxes listening to what is now called underground rap.

The music emerged alongside breakdancing and graffiti, also popularized in the inner-city youth culture in New York City in the early 1970s as well. It is a unique, progressive style that attracts experimental artists with a deep love for diverse music styles, and many with strong poetic skills seek out background beats that compliment their performances and help contribute to the originality of their words.

Hip hop music was (and is) a venue for personal expression and creativity. Rap is the culture of African Americans, the continuation of their language and traditions.

Music journalist Peter Shapiro suggests that Kool G Rap “created the blueprint for Nas, Biggie and everyone who followed in their path.” Music isn’t about music, it’s everything we do day to day. Musically, rap songs usually have a strong rhythmic aspect with the spoken lyrics emulating the intense rhythm of the beat and exemplyfying daily African American life in the ghetto’s of America.

Boots Riley and Pam The Funktress
Two of the best unkown hip hop artists in the world today, these two have carved out a slice of the pie in a niche that is riddled with top quality artists such as Talib Kweli, M-1, etc. The conscious/revolutionary hip hop genre is where The Coup is mainly focused, however many songs are reminiscent of Parliament Funk and Pick A Bigger Weapon really has a good variety of songs that feature that type of mixture. The latest album from The Coup, Pick A Bigger Weapon is in my opinion one of their best albums ever. Props to The Coup on this, one of our featured albums for the month of April.

Underground Hip Hop Beats

Nowadays hip hop is more than just drum beats, producers also use baselines and melodies in order to make beats. But it all started with the drums, for which hip hop music is known the most. Disc jockeys used to sample and isolate drums from music tracks, mostly from soul and funk music, to make their own, new sound. This was popular in the 80’s, when people gathered together on block parties and used to dance on these new drum beats. Later on, the Djs started to scratch, put instrument sounds and vocals on their beats. The result was a new music genre named hip hop.

The hip hop music went through a lot of changes, but the drums are still the heart of this genre. Even big producers still work with drum machines and MPCs, like Kanye West for example. And the result is very good! It’s really amazing how something that simple can become and stay so popular and move so many people all around the globe! Now, rap artists come from everywhere, Germany, Russia or Japan…

Some people say hip hop is dead, or is going to die out soon. But I don’t think this is true. It has become an integral part of the music industry and it will be that way. Every year new hip hop artists come on the scene, and they are as successful as the artists in every other genre. If you are fascinated about music, like me, and especially about hip hop, you want to be part of this movement!

Either you are a rapper, singer, producer or you want to do it all yourself, there’s no better time to start making your own music than now! If you are rapping or singing, you need to practice, so you have your own style, and that’s the most important part. Start with freestyling over different instrumental beats, and then, when you’re ready to make your own song, look for beat selling pages, let’s take „beats4tracks.com“ as an example, here you can listen to samples and buy the instrumentals for an accordingly low price. If you want to produce your own beats, you should look for a good and easy to use beat making software, DUBturbo or Fruity Loops for example. You might want to read my other articles on how to make your own beats.

Just try it out! Get yourself a free demo or software if you’re not sure about paying money for a product, there’s plenty good software out there. Feel the vibe and let it inspire you, it’s really fun!

Looking for a sweet collection of underground hip hop instrumentals? So this means you’ve decided to give the proverbial “finger” to the mainstream rap world, in favor of a more creatively free outlet? Enter the underground rap world. A good choice, friend, as you now have the opportunity to spread your wings and create the music you’ve always wanted to create. On the other hand, let it be known now that by being an underground rapper, your chances at mainstream success slim quite a bit. Not because of your skill level, by any means, but because of your style.

And that’s the crazy part. The mainstream tends to shun underground hip hop instrumentals, and the rappers flowing over them, despite the fact that the music and lyricism is much more thoughtful and intricate. The popular music field demands simplicity, and they get it over and over again.

But if you aren’t down for that, forge your own path. Tons of indie labels are looking for artists like you to sign every day. So let me tell you how to get started so you can get your name out there!

1. Make more than just beats. Make an atmosphere. Underground beats focus on a much grittier, dub-like sound, using all sorts of worldly instruments to get a mood across to the listener. They are atmospheric and contain ridiculous amounts of depth. Make it so that with every repeated play, the listener finds something new.

2. Don’t be afraid of experimentation, be it within your instrumentals or your lyrics! The great thing about being under the ground is that you aren’t expected to rap with certain viewpoints or ideals. Stretch your creativity as far as you can! Want an Eastern Santoor as your main melody? Maybe even a Xiao flute? So what if no one even knows what those are! If you can produce an awesome sound with them, go for it! You WILL be rewarded for your originality!

3. Listen to your favorite underground artists and producers, and look for aspects of their sounds and styles that you enjoy. Work towards building your own unique style by using their works as building blocks and inspiration!

With these tips in mind, your underground hip hop instrumentals will definitely be ready to help take you to the next level: signing with an independent record label!

Picking the right production tools is a very important part of any producer’s journey. The sound that you have as a producer will greatly depend on the tools that you use. So when picking your tools the first thing you have to decide on is what you want to sound like. If you want to have a grimey old school underground hip hop sound, similar to Nas’s illmatic in the early 90’s than you should consider using a old MPC or ASR-10. You are going to want to get a large collection of vinyl records, and drum breaks. You will also probably want to have a synthesize of some sort that has a good bass patch to write your basslines with. If you are trying to make beats of this style and using a triton extreme you will find yourself wondering why you can’t get your beats to sound like what you want them to sound like. Similarly if all you are using is a bunch a vinyl records and a mpc, and you’re trying to make pop records like Timbaland you will find yourself scratching your head. But this is common sense.

Let’s talk about about specifics details. First let’s start with your drums. If you are doing anything in the pop world you are going to want to make sure you have a great 808 kit. The Roland 808 has been around in popular music since the 80’s and it doesn’t look like it is going anywhere. As the Black Eyed Pea’s put it, the 808 is that Boom Boom in your trunk. There are tons and tons of crappy 808 sounds floating around the internet, make sure you spend the time to sort through them to find a good 808 kit that is specific to you. They all technically come from the same sound source but if you listen closely you will find little idiosyncrasies in the different sounds. Not all 808’s are created equally.

The problem with the 808 is that everybody uses it. I feel like the best way to incorporate the 808 in your production is using it sparingly, use the 808 kick underneath a different kick, or use the clap as a percussion instrument rather than your clap. Obviously there have been many producers who have made a lot of money using the 808 kit as their main source of drums but to every beat that gets placed with the 808 as the dominant sound source there are ten thousand others that sound exactly the same.

Underground Hip Hop Vs Mainstream Hip Pop

Underground Hip Hop is regarded by most hip hop fans as the real hip hop. Many critics of mainstream hip hop feel that it is watered down, corporate and too strongly influenced by the record companies. Underground hip hop maintains the root elements of hip hop that mainstream hip hop does not. Let’s analyze further.

Breakdancing: In the mainstream this is seen on shows like Americas Best Dance Crew and it’s hosted by Slater from Saved By The Bell… While in the underground scene it is practiced by die hard b-boys and b-girls who eat, sleep and live hip hop.

Rapping: With prominent artists like Soulja Boy and T-Pain ruining the understanding of what rap and hip hop is, it is hard for many to admit that they even like hip hop for fear that they will be mocked. Mainstream hip hop is not true to the root elements of hip hop because it is not subversive. It is not true to the culture of anti-establishment in fact it is a puppet of the establishment. However, some artists who would be considered mainstream, Eminem, Jay-Z, Kanye West, are true to hip hop.

Graffiti: Almost totally underground now, graffiti art is shunned by mainstream society as being vandalism.

Beat Boxing: Much like graffiti beat boxing is a dieing tradition with only a few beat boxers making it big.

DJ’s: Since the conception of the disc jockey DJ’s have transformed music. Sampling and scratching was once prominent in hip hop. Now of days sampling is used for everything but you would be lucky to hear a dj scratch anything on the radio.

So called hip hop radio stations overplay a few hip hop songs along side Lady Gaga and the like.

It is important, when dealing with music production, to take into serious consideration sound quality. Underground hip hop audio has always been fairly bad in times past. Now however with high quality recording equipment at somewhat reasonable prices small time recording studios are able to produce music that has incredibly good sound quality. While some underground hip hop artists still choose to use the cheapest quality recording equipment others have moved forward and are now using industry standard equipment and producing underground hip hop audio that is far better than in the past. The reason for using the better equipment and software is obvious, in fact the only reason people still use outdated or inferior equipment is because of cost. Synonymous with the underground hip hop culture is poverty. Most folks that get into rap/hip hop do so from the lower class. While there are plenty of rappers coming out of the suburbs claiming to be thugs, those rappers tend to lean toward the mainstream and thus there music would not be considered underground hip hop, but rather poser ass mainstream hip pop for the dumbed down masses.

Underground Hip Hip Recording

There are many resources out there that can help you find better equipment and techniques to improve your recording quality as well as beat production quality and overall underground hip hop audio. Check out some of the resources below for information on underground hip hop audio production and equipment.

Mayday Lyrics

MAYDAY!!!!
born in the flood
bloody fingerpaint sets
blackmarketed fresh
water canons forget me not
epitaph airbrush with death
white t’s
wife beaters
button up
reattach flesh

in between the lines
outside of the law
underneath the veil
we dig our foundations
we navigate the globe
trying to find a pattern to break the mold
with a family to feed
theres nowhere we wont go
but what if were caught
they say Im a snitch
shot at the check point
found with his throat slit
theres spray paint on the teleprompter
anchorman screams that hes seen a monster
mayday
theres bloodstains on his shirt
mayday
they say that hes gone berserk

sometimes
when I wanna shut out this world
wanna rip up this page
wanna pour out this heart
wanna get up on this stage
and my lips become percussion
and my fists become the rage
and I pound on this table
til it gives me something to say
then I think about things that Ive seen
right in front of me
that I dont wanna believe
gimme one of these mikes
lemme letem know
the way that it is is not how its gonna be
not if we dont letem get ahead of us
the present tensions no threat
its just a fence across the path
that were already ready to walk
rock solid footsteps
letem put up obstacles
and prove that it isnt possible
fuck that
we dont giveem any weight
true liberty and freedoms at stake
peace will never become pass
live my life until my last day

it was half-past eight in the bat cave
when the cracks in the plaster collapsed
and gave way to gaps in the pavement
mayday mayday
put it on blast
for the passengers and messengers
cause this is a disaster
where the fuck are the rescue workers
not far
off pissing on a cop car
in the hall with a poptart
sipping liquor in the rockbar
everyone climb to the frontline
lunchtimes cancelled
all hands on deck to pull survivors from the landfill
onlookers passers-by shake off that rubble
brush off your shoulders
break free from your standstill

signs of a better world
causes we understand
failures we expected to occur
and bring redemption for our sins
safety from the crowds
in the shadows on the run
we write our own cider house
rules to keep alive
rituals that prove their worth
search for systems we can trust
rhythms we can lock into

this is madness salvage teams
can’t bandage
hope when its damaged
or broken compassion
not enough rope in the van when
world is collapsing
our mode of action
broadcast through the glass
its all we can manage
donate with the plastic
scraps from the salad
hoping to balance
emotions invalidated
and staged on 4:3 aspects
just ballast for sadness
lives shattered are standard
fare for cameras and channels
stare no abracabras

no faster answers
or mantras for disasters
remastered and plastered
got it all backwards
do you know the faction your backing
its another man down
another mother gone
child drowned
another silenced song
solitude
another kind of strong
I miss you
another strung along
missing in action
another page is blackend burned
turned to ashes to ashes
dust off the flags and the caskets
we will never find another you
despite the life of love we knew
these lightning times are trouble who
cant count the strikes that punished through
the bonds we thought would never break
and never will and never fade and never change
but there is the rage
of losing you to their mistakes

in between the lines
signs of a the next movement
refuge from the crowd
outside of the law
causes we understand
hands that trace
instructions for descendants in the
shadows on the run
underneath the veil
failures we expected to
occur and bring redemption for our sins
in between the lines
