This is an old school classic hit from The Coup called Fat Cats, Bigga Fish. I have been rocking The Coup albums for a minute and Boots Riley is hands down one of the dopest revolutionary emcees ever. Pam is a dope DJ and has been cuttin up tracks for decades. I am stoked to be seeing both of them in Portland this year. Last time Boots was in town he performed an acoustic set with a guitarist from Tom Morrelo’s band The Nightwatchman. That was a dope show but I expect this one to be way doper with the full beats and everything. Props to Boots and Pam, The Coup are rocking Portland tonight.

Shooting at Lloyd Center
Shooting at Lloyd Center
PORTLAND – A young man was arrested for attempted murder and another teen accused of trying to start a riot after gunfire erupted inside the busy Lloyd Center Mall Wednesday night, police said. A fight between rival gang members broke out around 6:30 p.m. and escalated into gunfire, police said, while the mall was packed with Spring Break shoppers. No one was injured but people inside the mall said it was a terrifying ordeal. “Definitely a real gun,” said eyewitness Steve Flakus. “(He) fired three rounds, one at the guy he had an altercation with, then two into the crowd of people I was looking at shoes with.” Officers just happened to be very close by and quickly swarmed the mall. They broke up the fight and found two handguns. “Officers determined that a 19-year-old male subject was targeted by the shooter and that multiple gunshots had been fired. The Gang Enforcement Team was already on scene and began investigating this incident as gang-related,” explained detective Mary Wheat, a spokeswoman for the Portland Police Bureau. “It was pretty wild,” said John Rodriguez, who works inside the mall. “I was terrified for my life.” Three people were taken into police custody for questioning, according to Wheat. She said police later arrested a 17-year-old man on one court of attempted murder and a 16-year-old boy on one count of riot. Names have not been released since both suspects are minors. No one was injured in the shooting, which police believe was gang-related. The mall was busy with Spring Break shoppers when the shots rang out.
Two youths charged after Lloyd Center brawl and shooting
A 17-year-old stands charged with attempted murder and a 16-year-old was charged with rioting in connection with a gang-related fight and shooting Wednesday evening at Lloyd Center Mall. Portland Police Officers were flagged down by mall security around 6:30 p.m., who reported that a large group of youths were clustered near the Foot Action store, fighting and firing gunshots. Officers broke up the fight and eventually recovered two handguns. Three teen boys were detained by police after officers determined they had allegedly targeted a 19-year-old man. No one was seriously wounded, police said. Gang Enforcement Team investigators reviewed surveillance video, interviewed witnesses and then narrowed in on the 17-year-old as the shooter. He was arrested for attempted murder and the 16-year-old was charged with one count of riot.
Gang officers were already working in Holladay Park across the street from the mall at the time of the incident, a heightened effort to reduce any possible violence during spring break.
2 Teens Arrested In Lloyd Center Shooting
PORTLAND, OR – Two teenagers were arrested Wednesday night after a shooting at the Lloyd Center mall in northeast Portland. Officers said the shooting occurred at about 6:30 p.m. when a large group of rival gang members got into a fight outside the Foot Action store. Witnesses said the incident escalated quickly. “The guy took a swing at him, he took a swing back, guy takes out a gun and fires once then fires two more times,” said witness Stephen Flakus. “And it was like, what just happened?” Frightened customers were seen rushing out of the mall after the gunshots rang out. Witness Jake Shaw said he heard “about five shots” and saw a man run toward the exit. Police left the mall to pursue the gunman after receiving tips he had headed north. Eventually, three people were detained and two handguns were recovered in connection with the shooting. Officers said they were able to identify the shooter as a 17-year-old boy. They arrested him later in the evening on a charge of attempted murder. Additionally, one 16-year-old boy was arrested on a charge of riot. There did not appear to be any serious injuries from the incident. Sgt. Tony Passadore, who responded to the shooting, said the shooting could have been much worse. “It’s a life-or-death situation in the blink of an eye,” he said. Fox 12 photojournalist Chris Rhoads and reporter Sophie Soong were with Passadore for a police ride-along when they responded to the mall shooting. Rhoads captured one teenager being detained on camera.
Gang enforcement officers were already in the Lloyd Center area prior to the shooting Wednesday night. Northeast precinct officers have been working daily at Holladay Park in an attempt to reduce any possible violence during spring break.
Although two people were arrested, Passadore said many more people were involved in the fight and shooting.

Snoop rocked the Roseland Theater with Daz Dillinger, Kurupt, and Supafly.
Following Bad Habitat’s set a fight broke out on the balcony. Shame on you, that aint what hip-hop is about. Fool fighting over who is the biggest Snoop fan? Who knows…
Snoop Dogg and The Dogg Pound performed in front of a sold out crowd on Thursday March 4th 2010 at the Roseland Theater in Downtown Portland, Oregon. The dank smoke in the building was so think you could literally take a hit from the air surrounding your face space. Earlier in the night they played the Making of Malice video on a huge projector center stage. Personally I was stoked to see Daz and Kurupt there.

Today we are highly involved in our communities through participating in and organizing after school programs, educational workshops, and other community events.

BUILDING PEOPLE POWER IN OREGON
Oregon Action works with communities of color and low income families by expanding electoral capacity by using traditional tools of mobilization such doors to door canvassing, phone canvassing, leafleting, community forums, marches, rallies and special events to increase participation in the electoral process.
Universal Zulus Form Portland Chapter
The Universal Zulu Nation has come to Portland.
The newly formed local chapter of the international hip hop culture organization – the 45th Parallel Universal Zulus – is holding a house warming celebration on Friday, Nov. 6 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at their new office at 109 SE Salmon St. Suite C in Portland.
What began as a community organization in New York City in the 1970s by hip hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa, has now expanded to many corners of the globe. Representing the core values of hip hop culture, Zulus are a mix of DJs, musicians, rappers, artists and others interested in bettering their community through the hip hop lense.
In Portland, the 45th Parallel Zulus first began organizing with the help of Seattle’s 206 Zulus in 2005. 45th Parallel leader Mikey Hortaleza, aka DJ GrimRock, says his newly formed chapter is one part of a “family of many tribes.”
“We stress the preservation of the culture of hip hop,” he told The Skanner. “People misunderstand us as a rap group. Which we’re not. It’s actually a culture.”
Although hip hop culture involves many different elements -dancing, DJing, graffiti art, music – there is only one way to experience what being a part of Zulu Nation is all about.
“You have to experience this,” GrimRock says. “Our family is many tribes … different ethnicities, religious beliefs … we invite everyone to come build with us.”
While the New York Zulus of the 70s were going through something very different than the 206 or 45th Parallel Zulus, everyone can find a common ground to create something positive out of hip hop culture.
45th Parallel Zulu
The 45th Parallel Zulus is the Oregon Chapter of Universal Zulu Nation. Universal Zulu Nation is a grassroots community organization that started in the South Bronx of New York in 1973 by a young student known as Afrika Bambaataa. Most commonly known as the founding family of Hip-Hop Culture, the Universal Zulu Nation now has chapters all over the world. Under the principles of Peace, Unity, Love, and Having Fun, they continue to use arts and entertainment culture as a vehicle for educating while providing platforms for people to unite and contribute to their local communities.

Underground Hip-Hop Reviews
Underground Hip-Hop Reviews by Hip-Hop Linguistics. Mama used to say, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” This statement is the basis of our reviews section. Unlike many hip-hop review publications, HHL does not publish negative reviews. Our goal is to recommend only the best hip-hop in the underground, and our reviews section contains only albums recommended by our staff of reviewers. So if it’s in this section, it’s worth checking out!
This is a nice little FREE EP from Sunspot Jonz and Luckyiam aka Mystik Journeymen, who haven’t dropped an album in like a decade now. “Return 2 The Love” was appropriately released on Valentine’s Day. Apparently, this EP is a preview for their upcoming album “Return to Eternia,” though no official release date exists at this point. “Return 2 The Love” has features from fellow Living Legends crew members The Grouch, Murs and Scarub.
Sleep “Hesitation Wounds” Album Review
I heard of Sleep a couple years back when somebody emailed me some material from an Underground Northwest hip-hop collective known as oldominion. But I never got around to listening to his music. Then recently, one of my connects over at Strange Famous Records sent me Sleep’s track Lothar, which I posted on HHL. Then about a month ago, when I stumbled across a video for Sleep’s Orchestra of Strangers, I was so impressed that I immediately picked up a copy of “Hesitation Wounds.” And I’ve been bumping the Underground hip hop album regularly ever since. Awol One & Factor: Official
Check out this cut off the new Awol One & Factor album Owl Hours:
While touring through Canada a few years ago with Busdriver and Circus, Awol met the Producer/DJ named Factor and began building a friendship and working relationship from there. Following the success of a single called “try”, the duo of Awol One and Factor released Only Death Can Kill You, a mellow Underground hip hop record full of Awol’s perfectly simple yet clever self analyzing lyrics and characteristic gruff voice over Factor’s melodic and precisely crafted production.
Almost 3 years later they are releasing a completely different sounding album – Owl Hours – what some would perceive as Awol and Factor’s album of mass and magnitude. Production moves from Electronic Pop to Folk Hop with a number live musicians contributing their talents. Topics range from celebrations, darkness, love and analysis to straight up drunken party anthems all told through the eccentric eyes of Walrus One.
Guest vocalists on Owl Hours (including Aesop Rock, Myka 9, Tha Alkaholiks, Sunspot Jonz of Living Legends, and executive producer Xzibit) all seem inspired and come off strong as ever over Factor’s catchy, hard hitting beats. Also included on the Owl Hours album is a Bonus Dj Fingaz remix feat. Xzibit and B Real of Cypress Hill. Fans of Awol’s past work and former naysayers alike all agree that this is an extremely fresh, wize and enjoyable 35+ minutes of music.
