Since this is my last weekend on the site until I return, begging for a job as James Del’s assistant, I’ve invited some friends to play with me. Matt Ealer is the proprietor of Rendit Dot Tumblr Dot Com. Matt?
I just drove from DC to Philly and listened to Jay-Z’s 2007 American Gangster about two and a half times. This is significant.
Sandwiched between two albums (comeback flop Kingdom Come, and 2009’s high-tech Blueprint 3) that are the rockcritical equivalent of Batman and Robin—so easily maligned by the type of press that values “authenticity” and “honesty” among all else such that it becomes cliche — it stood as a revelation at the time. Al Green, Marvin Gaye, vintage Beastie Boys, and Isley Brothers samples. Lyrical nods to classic Outkast, EPMD, Rakim, Biggie. The picture painting of Ghostface mixed with the lyrical dexterity of MF DOOM mixed with Biggie’s weird and halting virtuoso breath control. All the signifiers were correctly in place, and we ate it up. In spite of ourselves. … Read More…

“She Say” by Jola – This track is pretty tight, but the video really sells it. I would call it nerdy comedy rap. I was pleasantly surprised. Props to Front Page Hip Hop for the video.

The Following is from Piece of Shep personal blog of a northwest hip hop fan
In my constant quest for new hip hop music I’ve seen one name come across my screen several times: Blue Scholars. Even though I’ve seen them mentioned by various underground hip hop fanboys, I’ve never given them a shot. Read More
I’m very passionate when it comes to hip hop. At times I’m its biggest advocate, and others the biggest apologist. Most of the hip hop that is played on the radio embarrasses me. That isn’t true hip hop in my opinion, it is no different than Britney Spears or Miley Cyrus. It’s pop music. Lost in the shuffle of throw-away singles and one-hit wonders are some of the most creative artists, songs, and albums of any genre. I want to discuss some of the most creative hip hop albums of all time. On top of having great production and lyrics, all of them tell a story from beginning to end.

Underground Hip-Hop Reviews by Hip-Hop Linguistics. Mama used to say, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” This statement is the basis of our reviews section. Unlike many hip-hop review publications, HHL does not publish negative reviews. Our goal is to recommend only the best hip-hop in the underground, and our reviews section contains only albums recommended by our staff of reviewers. So if it’s in this section, it’s worth checking out!
This is a nice little FREE EP from Sunspot Jonz and Luckyiam aka Mystik Journeymen, who haven’t dropped an album in like a decade now. “Return 2 The Love” was appropriately released on Valentine’s Day. Apparently, this EP is a preview for their upcoming album “Return to Eternia,” though no official release date exists at this point. “Return 2 The Love” has features from fellow Living Legends crew members The Grouch, Murs and Scarub.
Sleep “Hesitation Wounds” Album Review
I heard of Sleep a couple years back when somebody emailed me some material from an Underground Northwest hip-hop collective known as oldominion. But I never got around to listening to his music. Then recently, one of my connects over at Strange Famous Records sent me Sleep’s track Lothar, which I posted on HHL. Then about a month ago, when I stumbled across a video for Sleep’s Orchestra of Strangers, I was so impressed that I immediately picked up a copy of “Hesitation Wounds.” And I’ve been bumping the Underground hip hop album regularly ever since. Check out this cut off the new Awol One & Factor album Owl Hours:
While touring through Canada a few years ago with Busdriver and Circus, Awol met the Producer/DJ named Factor and began building a friendship and working relationship from there. Following the success of a single called “try”, the duo of Awol One and Factor released Only Death Can Kill You, a mellow Underground hip hop record full of Awol’s perfectly simple yet clever self analyzing lyrics and characteristic gruff voice over Factor’s melodic and precisely crafted production.
Almost 3 years later they are releasing a completely different sounding album – Owl Hours – what some would perceive as Awol and Factor’s album of mass and magnitude. Production moves from Electronic Pop to Folk Hop with a number live musicians contributing their talents. Topics range from celebrations, darkness, love and analysis to straight up drunken party anthems all told through the eccentric eyes of Walrus One.
Guest vocalists on Owl Hours (including Aesop Rock, Myka 9, Tha Alkaholiks, Sunspot Jonz of Living Legends, and executive producer Xzibit) all seem inspired and come off strong as ever over Factor’s catchy, hard hitting beats. Also included on the Owl Hours album is a Bonus Dj Fingaz remix feat. Xzibit and B Real of Cypress Hill. Fans of Awol’s past work and former naysayers alike all agree that this is an extremely fresh, wize and enjoyable 35+ minutes of music.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) –
What began as a hobby and form of therapy has evolved into a career for Nigerian singer-songwriter Nneka (pronounced “neck-ah”).
“Nigeria is a tough place to grow up,” the 2009 MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Award winner says. “Tribal wars, oil company exploitation, corrupt political leaders … I never really thought about becoming somebody; it was more about waking up with no pressure in a peaceful surrounding. But growing up like that has made me who I am.”
Audiences across the country are getting to know Nneka as she tours in support of her first U.S. release, “Concrete Jungle” (Yo Mama’s/Decon/Epic). In the midst of a 12-market tour to such cities as Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and Atlanta, Nneka made a high-profile appearance on “Late Show With David Letterman” February 3.
A compilation of her first two critically acclaimed European albums, “Concrete Jungle” showcases a singer-songwriter who’s unafraid to bear witness to hypocrisy and social and political injustice. Set against a backdrop of hip-hop, Afro-beats, rock, soul and reggae — inspired by such influences as Talib Kweli and the Fugees — Nneka’s music is raw and sensual, as evidenced on lead single “The Uncomfortable Truth” (an iTunes Single of the Week), “Heartbeat” and “Suffri.”
“She brings a sociopolitical awareness rarely heard these days,” says air personality Garth Trinidad, of noncommercial KCRW Los Angeles. Trinidad made Nneka a featured performer at his January 30 Grammy Brunch in L.A. “People are starving for what she brings, especially because the music is based on classic, thump-laden hip-hop.”
Wrapping her tour February 14 in Chicago, Nneka is already booked for several South by Southwest showcases and slated for some Lilith Fair dates.
