Underground hip hop is an “umbrella term” for hip hop music outside the general commercial canon . The term is almost exclusively associated with independent artists, signed to small independent labels or no label at all. Underground hip hop is often characterized by having more socially conscious, positive, or anti-commercial lyrics than the mainstream ; however, there is no unifying or universal theme – Allmusic suggests that it has “has no sonic signifiers” . “The Underground” can also refer to the community of musicians, fans and others that support non-commercial, or independent music.

Style of Underground Hip Hop

Underground hip-hop encompasses several different styles of music , though it is often politically themed and socially conscious. Numerous acts in the book How to Rap are described as being both underground and politically or socially aware, these include – Akir , Little Brother , Brother Ali , Mr. Lif , MURS, Binary Star, People Under the Stairs, Lifesavas, and Zion I.

Underground artists often have high levels of critical acclaim – acts who have been specifically noted as being both underground and having numerous critically acclaimed albums include Jurassic 5, Aesop Rock, Ugly Duckling, Little Brother, Brother Ali, El Da Sensei, Dilated Peoples, Blackalicious, Non Phixion, Freestyle Fellowship, Binary Star, Planet Asia, The Visionaries, People Under the Stairs, Cannibal Ox, and Zion I.

Additionally, many underground artists are said to have “intelligent”, “intricate”, or “complex” lyrics, these include – Akir, Ugly Duckling, Brother Ali, Cage, El Da Sensei, Blackalicious, Mr. Lif, Andre Nickatina, MURS, Binary Star, Planet Asia, Lifesavas, and Zion I.

Some underground artists produce music that celebrates the fundamental elements or pillars of hip hop culture, such as People Under the Stairs and Blacastan whose music “recalls hip-hop’s golden age”

History of Underground Hip Hop

Early stages

In hip hop’s formative years, the vast majority of the genre was underground music, by definition. Although the Sugarhill Gang gained commercial success in 1979, most artists did not share such prominence until the mid 1980s. Ultramagnetic MCs debut album Critical Beatdown is seen as one of the earliest example of “underground hip hop”. It was described that the album was characteristic of what would later be known as “underground hip hop”.

In 1991, A Tribe Called Quest’s “Check the Rhime” reached #1 on the Billboard Rap Singles Charts, but did not crack the U.S. Hot 100. Once hip hop music entered the pop sphere, a clear dichotomy began to form between the mainstream and the underground. Underground hip hop “scenes” or communities formed in many major U.S. cities bringing artists and audiences together for concerts, open mics, battles and parties.

2000s

It is important to note that many artists that are considered “underground” today, were not always so. Artists such as De La Soul, The Pharcyde, Wu-Tang Clan, and others all broke the U.S. Hot 100 chart more than once. Yet today, they are more likely to tour with today’s alternative hip hop acts, than with their successors at the top of the hip hop charts. This reflects a general: modern fans of underground hip hop music are more likely to embrace music from the genre’s earlier, or classic periods, than the music on commercial hip hop radio stations. Prominent albums of this decade includes Masters of the Universe, which was described as a “refreshing alternative from the mainstream of rap”.

Underground Hip Hop Radio

College and community radio stations were the traditional incubator of underground hip hop music. The radio charts that track college radio play continue to be one of the most important indicators of success for independent hip hop artists. Beginning in the late 1990s internet radio stations emerged as another powerful alternative tool for artists. Today, satellite radio offers even more venues for artists to find an audience without relying on traditional commercial radio play.

Today’s Underground Hip Hop Are Mainstreamed By Internet Radio Stations, Such As: 4 Elements Radio , True Hip Hop.fm, Radio Mic-Beatz and Rap Monster Radio

The Underground Hip Hop Review

In the world of today, hip hop artists are under a lot of pressure to stay fresh, original and true to there music. I would define underground hip hop as a genre of of innovative, unique and often self produced rap. Many underground artists having become fed up with the way major labels produce music, have struck it out on their own to produce music in a different way. Some make it big and produce their music in professional studios, while other’s rig up their microphone on their PC to express their creativity.

Underground artists come from all walks of life, on all types of budgets. For the love of their genre they fight to get their music out to the masses. Playing at clubs, sending out demo tapes and just generally getting the word out, they aim to upkeep the good name of hip hop by staying experimental, creative and fresh.

Over the years I’ve devoted much of my time to exploring the depths of underground hip hop, I leave you ( the reader ) a portal to some of the finest underground hip hop online. Enjoy

New Underground Hip Hip album reviews, news, commentary and more every day from the mind of Mindskillz of Surreal Music and Bad Habitat. Northwest underground hip hop fame.

Review: The Alchemist – Rapper’s Best Friend

One of the most respected beatmakers in hip-hop, The Alchemist name holds weight like few others. On ‘Rappers Best Friend’, you get 14 instrumental versions of the producer’s past collaborations with a varied group of artists that includes Scarface, Dilated Peoples, Jadakiss, Prodigy of Mobb Deep, Big Twin, and Tony Yayo.

The LP starts off with tracks that should be familiar to most hip-hop fans. Bring You Light, Stuck To U and Still Feel Me where all featured on Jadakiss, Snoop Dogg and Prodigy albums respectively.

The album continues with my favorite tracks ‘Shine’, ‘Carved In Stone’ and ‘Guns Is Razors’. Throughout these tracks Alchemist demonstrates his unique production ability. On ‘Carved in Stone’ he used handclaps to give the beat a sense of continuity but lets the drums mess around them. Hearing his tracks without the vocals truly allows you to appreciate the layers of sound he arranges around the sample.

There’s other tracks which tend to be quite simple(such as ‘The Thirst’), but form the basis for a skilled Emcee to build a great track.

‘Rappers Best Friend’ gives fans a chance to appreciate The Alchemist’s production in its purist form. Beat connoisseurs, hip-hop fans in general and fledgling rappers looking for tracks to hone their skills in particular will all appreciate this collection.

Royce 5′9’s unwavering passion for music and hunger for the game keeps him in the studio day and night. For further proof, look no further then the amount of music he will be releasing over the course of the next three months, which will undeniably validate Royce’s place in the pantheon of Hip-Hop’s elite lyricists.

While Royce preps the release of his highly-anticipated “Street Hop” LP, (which will be released on 9-22-09) which is executive-produced by DJ Premier and has already generated overwhelming critical accolades alone with the release of street-singles “Shake This” and “Part Of Me” and the forthcoming self-titled debut LP from the buzz worthy Bi-Coastal conglomerate Slaughterhouse (Royce 5′9, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz & Crooked I) this summer.

On the heels of both releases, Royce will first be releasing a Digital only EP entitled “The Revival.” “The Revival” will be released on 7-7-09 and it will include new tracks from Royce’s “Street Hop” LP along with a new unreleased Slaughterhouse track and will be available at all major digital retailers. Royce will also be debuting a new single and video for “The Revival” in the very immediate future. Likewise, each member of Slaughterhouse will also be releasing a new digital EP throughout the month of July and each release will contain a new Slaughterhouse track that will not be included on their debut.

With so much good music ready to be unleashed on the masses Royce asserts “I’m looking forward to releasing new music and touring this summer. Street Hop has been in the works for almost 2 years and the release date will be here before you know it. The Revival will give people a chance to see what I’ve been up to and what to expect from the album. The month of July will belong to Slaughterhouse with the release of our full length group album and solo EP’s from me followed by Joell, Joey and Crooked. We will show fans why we are the ones to watch.”

Shyne Still In Custody, For Possible Deportation

The web is buzzing today with the news that Shyne was finally free today, but sadly the celebrations may be premature. According to MTV News, Shyne is still being held, as Immigration officials decide whether he should be deported to Belize: Unlike the Polanski case, I think this one is an example of the many legit issues that arise around deportation & extradition policies…I was never a “Free Shyne” protester, but the man has unquestionably served his time. Is this really necessary?

You may recall Slick spent a long time in limbo for similar reasons, until it was finally resolved when Gov. David Paterson pardoned him..
Shyne Still In Custody, For Possible Deportation

MTV News

It looks like Shyne’s homecoming is on hold for the moment… his release is now under review, as representatives for the rapper revealed to MTV News that the Brooklyn MC is being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at an unspecified facility in Western New York State. Officials are determining whether or not to deport the rapper, who was born in Belize, a rep explained…

The Positive Effect Music Downloading Has Had On The Music Industry

Many have argued whether or not music downloading has had a positive or negative effect on the music industry. The easy and simple answer would draw one to say that the effect has been negative because downloading takes away from sales and ultimately takes money out of the artists’ pockets. However, a deeper dive into the topic suggests that some artists sure have benefited from having their music downloaded.

The more and more music downloading has come to the light and become popular, the more we have seen artists accept and understand it and since that has had happened, we’ve seen an abundant of artists releasing music for free; especially on the west coast.

A perfect example of this is Dr. Dre protege Bishop Lamont. Lamont has been signed to Interscope Records for over two years now, still awaiting the opportunity to put out a debut album. However, Lamont has been able to stay relevant and keep his fans interested in his music and anticipating his debut album. How can one do that while not even putting out an album? Lamont released three albums for free in the year 2007 alone. Before artists accepted downloading, when had you ever heard of an artist putting out an album for free, let alone THREE in one year? Lamont saw these three albums gain thousands and thousands of free downloads, keeping fans interested with new music and gaining new fans along the way.

So before you claim that downloading is completely negative and doesn’t help the artists at all, see and understand how such artists as Bishop Lamont has found a way to benefit from it.

Aesop Rock music and lyrics redefined hip for many a listener, including myself. When his classic album Float dropped, hip hop fans were exposed to a whole new style of lyrics never seen in the genre before. The single Daylight- perhaps Aesop’s best known song to date- on Labor Days brought him to the forefront of underground rap.

Born Ian Matthias Bavitz in Long Island, Aesop Rock grew up in New York and studied painting at Boston College. While working as a waiter he released his first two albums: Music For Earthworms (1997) and the Appleseed EP (1999).The albums caught the eyes of many in the music community and Float held their interest for years to come. Production was a compilation between Aesop Rock and his friend Blockhead, though the latter’s influence is much more recognizable on Float.

The next album was Labor Days and is considered by many to be Aesop’s best album, both lyrically and musically. It wasn’t until Bazooka Tooth that Aesop Rock music – not just lyrics- began to take form. Unfortunately, most of his fans found his music too heavily featured, making it difficult to discern his already complex rhymes. Still, tracks like “No Jumper Cables” caught on, and were released as a single.

Times changed, and the evolution of his music changed with it. In his early albums, there was a much heavier influence on jazz (as a result of working with Blockhead); Labor Days seemed to be more rock-infused than earlier albums, while Bazooka Tooth ushered in a whole new musical style for the Long Island rapper. The sounds were much more urban based with electronica overtones.

While those elements still remained important, in his album Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives Aesop took a back seat role in production, while still remaining at the forefront lyrically, both on the album and underground hip hop in general.

Aesop Rock music has always been important to hip hop, though he struggles to earn accolades for his production work- sort of a Kanye West in reverse. However, Ace did land a production commission for Nike, where he produced a 45 minute track for joggers. The music was conceptual and featured several landscapes for the listener to follow (reminiscent of Forest Crunk on the Daylight EP).

Aesop Rock music is unique in hip hop and should be given special attention by aficionados, both for the musical and lyrical concepts.

by: Gian Fiero

Over the years I have had many conversations with music artists about commercial music, which usually leads to them disclosing their disdain and hatred of it. Some refer to Pop music (Pop, as in what’s popular now) as commercial music.

Others think of anything that is receiving heavy rotation on radio as commercial music. Whatever their definition, one thing is often overlooked: commercial music is the heart of the music industry which pumps the blood that keeps it alive.

So why then are so many music artists resistant to making commercial music? The answer that I’m often given is because they don’t want to “sell-out” their creative integrity by conforming to some industry version of what’s popular (i.e. what’s selling at the moment). It becomes very obvious to me that the problem is not commercial music, but rather the perception and definition of it.

The misconception is that the music industry created this superficial definition of commercial music to strip away the artistry and true identity of artists for the purpose of making money; forcing artist to create songs that the “masses” will enjoy. That fallacy is often perpetuated by music artists who are usually incapable (not unwilling) of creating commercially viable songs.

The truth is the public, not the industry, dictates what is commercial, and for decades they have gravitated towards, embraced, and purchased songs that adhere to a commercial music format.

If commercial music is the rule for success and sales in the music industry, there are inevitably going to be some exceptions to it, but unfortunately, the tendency is for music artists to try and become the exception, instead of observing the rules and why they exist.

Simply put: the rules of commercial music success have not, and will not change. Not in your life time or your children’s lifetime. They exist because it’s human nature to reject the unfamiliar; in the music industry, similarity is the cornerstone of acceptance. This is why so many popular songs sound similar and contain familiar elements.

It’s a rule that is prevalent in every genre, and on every continent. There are those artists who do a masterful job of observing their own artistic values while delicately balancing the demands for commercial music by industry professionals. Artists such as Prince, Sting and Bjork, have pushed the envelope of creativity for years. But artists of their caliber who possess such sublime talent and vision are rare.

For the sake of clarification and argument, I will offer my explanation and industry definition of what commercial music is; based on 25 years of listening to recordings as a music lover, music industry professional, and music critic in what I will call, “The 6 Rules of Commercial Music Success.” They are songs that have the following:

1.) A STRONG HOOK/MEMORABLE CHORUS. If no one knows what your song is called, they can’t request it when they hear it on the radio. More importantly, they can’t buy it at retail…or track it down on the Internet to illegally download a copy of it.

2.) GOOD MELODY. Commercial music is characterized by good melodies (i.e. verses, choruses, and sometimes bridges that get stuck in your head and make you want to sing-along). What can the top selling hip-hop acts of the last 10 years (Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, Eminem, and 50 Cent) attribute their success to? Good melodies (not cool beats) that increase the commercial value of their music.

3.) WELL-PRODUCED. Coming from an R&B background where producers are a pivotal part of commercial music success, I did not realizeuntil I became a consultant that many rock bands don’t utilize, nor value producers like R&B music acts. Perhaps they should since the record company often assigns top-notch producers to enhance the quality of songs (through their musical expertise) and enrich the records (through their experience and proficiency in the recording process), ultimately making them more enjoyable to listen to and, you guessed it…more commercial!

4.) APPEALING LYRICS. The lyrics don’t have to be profound; people just have to be able to emotionally connect with and mentally relate to them. If you have a way of saying common things in an uncommon way, your lyrics will have an edge over the songwriter whose song is about the same topic. Write about what’s closest to your heart for credibility and sincerity, and others will be able to relate to your songs – especially if it’s on a subject matter that they know or have experienced.

5.) KEEP IT SHORT. Keep the length of your songs down to a maximum of four minutes. Jazz and World Music are exceptions. A song that is well-written makes people want to hear it again, and again, and again. The longer the song is, the less likely that will happen. Don’t believe me? Check the length of your favorite songs.

6.) TALENT/WELL-PERFORMED. Most outstanding vocalists are often surprised by how low this rule is on the list. The fact is that there are more mediocre songs performed by outstanding vocalists, than there are mediocre vocalists performing outstanding songs. A good song that is well-performed gives it an edge, but if the song is lacking, all of the yelling and vocal acrobatics that singers tend to use to compensate for it will not make it a better song…though it may help the singer to attract better songwriters to work with. If you lack talent and it’s a really good song, someone more talented can (and will) sing the song and make it better.

Now that you know the 6 rules of commercial music success, hopefully you will be able to use this information to your advantage and create songs that will increase your chances of success in your professional music endeavors…or you can ignore them and continue to wonder why no one (other than your friends and family – all of which listen to commercial music) like your songs.

by: All The Lyrics

This is a style that stays aside all the other music trends. Not aside, but somewhat deeper. The reason is it is a reflection of the race, the plurality of people united by roots and origin. Rap is the culture of Afro-Americans, the continuation of their language and traditions. Rap is a mixture of speech and music, actually it is speech laid on music or beat it’s better to say. And when we claim that people are united through music, meaning every single human being on this planet, rap unites the ones close to blood by music and then everybody else, either welcoming or being hostile to a newcomer. What attracts people in rap? Is it catchy? Maybe. Those non-natives to rap often state the flow of speech is too quick and it is difficult to differentiate the words. Sometimes it seems rap music is only for those from the cradle. Foreigners are not invited.

Rap is classified as urban poetry of lyrical resistance. Thus it is not the music for village like country music. It is the gathering power of those united by music in big cities. The aim is to resist the grieves because misfortunes are more dramatic and numerous in urban areas.

Rap does not only speak to the mind and emotions, but speaks to the society all around people, for people. If the words or courage to say those words are not there, the subconscious takes over and the Rap lyrics kick in.

But once captured by the beat, most people – mainly younger ones – begin to hear the words, and the words may describe just how they are feeling that day. If the boss came to work with an agenda to screw everyone, some people will “feel” the words and the beat, especially when enclosed in a car doing 70 on the freeway. It’s something about riding with the music turned full-blast that has a way of absorbing the mind and supplying a means of temporal escape.

Some songs have innocent words that impress upon the mind to be released later at the water cooler. Some choruses are catchy and when sung by certain artist will stay within the subconscious long after. Various rappers have unique voices that some people find attractive or along the same vocal tone as their own voice, which it makes it easier to sing along.

First goes the beat, and then goes the lyrics! It is not as smooth and tender as classical music, not as glossy as pop, but it has the scream of pain of real emotion of the world’s harshness. One may even state that rap is the most pain expressing music style. Those who sing it or it is better to say read it revive their feelings not only concerning love, as most of the other styles do. Their message is about life and the problems, especially the ones of the Afro-American people. The music of pain and oppression, rap is a remedy to the latter. Let all the pills be like that!

Remember the nineties? When hip hop was a culture, a life style, a way of living and breathing and dressing? Most would argue that it has been unwillingly moved aside by club and rap music. Hip hop is lost and while artists like Jay-z and Common and Nas and The Roots and LL are still practicing music, they are consistently overshadowed by hooks and catchy phrases and trendy styles. Although this form of music fades and is replaced by newer more gimmicky music, you have to wonder. With songs like You’re a Jerk making a huge wave and causing an all new “hip hop” style, what will become of the past hip hop fashion rules and absolutions?

The song is very catchy the dance is fun and the style represented goes against the grain entirely, which is why it is so successful. People are always looking for the hot new thing and leopard skinny jeans and fitted t-shirts are it! Or are they? The starters of the new dance craze are have set a trend and as usual the masses will follow. It’s just funny because wearing pants that hugged ever so tightly was once (not too long ago) a major no-no. Now most all the young men are running around with their skinny jeans sagging down almost to the end of their rear ends and ‘Jerkin’ as they stroll down the street. The young ladies used to mock boys endlessly when they saw then wearing tight jeans as it was a sign of having no fashion sense. Now the girls are praising the boys for wearing the brightest boldest colors of skinny jeans!

It’s a lot to digest as I am a hip hop head. Looking around you begin to feel one of three ways about the music and lifestyle you’re passionate about when you see it change. Excited, because there is innovation, aggravated at the constant gimmicks or you become a gimmick by creating a new one. I personally am just waiting to see how hip hop answers! We shall see.

Looking for new rap songs from your favorite mainstream and underground hip hop artists? Whether it’s gangsta rap, Dirty South tracks or old school hip hop, here’s where you can find the hottest new rap songs…

Admittedly, the internet has taken its toll on radio stations in the past decade, yet new songs get a lot of exposure. Here’s a short list of radio stations and internet radio where you’ll hear new music releases…

Pwer 106. The big name in the rap game. Power 106 drops music from the hottest rappers in the game, like Lil Wayne, Eminem and 50 Cent, as well as the up and coming new stars like Drake, Flo Rida and T.I.

Power 105. Strangely enough, this radio station originally played soft rock, but changed their format to hip hop and R&B in recent years. In addition to new rap music, they also play old school hip hop and have a section for rappers to spit freestyles (like the Wake Show).

Hot 97. Another authority when it comes to hip hop. Their motto is “We are hip hop and R&B” and given their years of experience dropping the latest new rap songs, no one would disagree.

IMEEM. With this website, you can easily create your own playlists from a wide variety of music, including underground rap, old school hip hop and regional favorites like East Coast or Dirty South. Another nice feature they offer is that listeners can also share their playlists with others through the social networking feature. Want to hear what other people are listening to? This is the place to check out.

Pandora. This just may be my favorite website, period. When it comes to finding new rap songs, look no further. With Pandora, you simply search for a musical style or artists and Pandora serves up a streaming playlist of related songs based on your preferences. It’s incredible how well Pandora serves up new artists; I’ll play this while on the computer and seem to hear a new song I like from an artists I’ve never heard of every ten minutes! Funded by the Music Genome Project, this website is completely free.

MixTapes

Rap music wouldn’t be where it is today if it wasn’t for mixtapes. It’s also a great way to hear rap songs mixed by DJs; not only does it give a new spin on the track, it also extends the shelf life of the original version.

DatPiff. This site’s selection of mixtapes cannot be beat. They also include numerous freestyles from rappers looking to get noticed.

ThatCrack. While their selection isn’t as big as DatPiff, but the quality is without question. Expect to see ThatCrack as the new source for mixtapes in the

New rap songs can be found at any of these sources. Keep listening, learning and enjoy!

The music business has found the answer to its mounting ails, which all the iPod world knows: album sales being replaced by singles downloads, Tower Records closing, and Borders apparently not having a clue about what music to stock.

But now there seems to be hope on the horizon. Columbia Records is trying a radical new experiment. The record giant and a principle perpetrator of musical nonsense on an overly obliging public has retained a canary, much as songbirds have been employed to detect, by passing out, the presence of poison gas.

The job of the tuneful bird is to provide the executives in the A & R department with a reality check as to what a good song is.

Here’s the new protocol. First the staff listens to a new track. If they think it has potential, they play it for the tweety bird. If it starts to sing along, they can present the ditty to management for probable release.

On the other hand, if the canary just stares in silence or falls off its perch, the track is to be considered not music.

Rumor has it that the music business may be remade toward a new melodiousness. So far the hipsters in pop and rap at Columbia’s A & R department have played over a hundred selects for the canary. Yet they have not managed to play even one that has inspired the bird to sing along.

Since the canary is nature’s own expert on song, there’s just no way to get around the fact that the singing creature is the ideal arbiter of tuneful music.

Of course, A & R has grown somewhat impatient with the rigorous new standard, but management cannot afford to relent.

In fact, the chairman of Columbia has posted a sign in the A & R department that says, “If going into the woods to listen to birdsong was good enough for Beethoven, it’s good enough for us.”

So the A & R staffers, much to their reluctant tutelage, find themselves with only one choice: Listen to that bird.

Are you looking for the best new hip hop songs? Whether it’s mainstream, underground rap, old school, gangsta or the Dirty South, here’s where you’ll find the hottest new hip hop songs to listen to, or download to your computer.

Hip Hop Radio Stations

Admittedly, the Internet has taken a bite out of local radio stations credibility, yet they still remain important when you want the hot new music. Here’s a list of hip-hop and R&B stations as well is a few Internet radio alternatives…

Power106. Anyone who’s listener this radio station knows it is the source for new rap songs. The Power features well known mainstream artists like Kanye West, The Game and 50 Cent.

Hot 97. They claim to be hip hop, nobody’s gonna argue with that claim. Check out their nationally syndicated programs; you won’t be disappointed.

Power 105. Though it used to play soft rock, Power 105 made the move to hip hop and R&B, including old school golden tracks and freestyles from up and coming underground rappers.

IMEEM. With IMEEM, You can essentially create your own mix tape in a matter of minutes. Listeners can search the huge database of music, save their playlists, and share those playlists with others on the websites social networking platform.

Pandora. I used to adore all the time searching for new hip hop songs. Simply visit their website and enter in the name of your favorite hip-hop group; Pandora will serve up your own personal radio station filled with similar artists based on lyrical and musical styles. You can vote each track up or down, and Pandora will increase or decrease the frequency of that song in your playlist according. If I’m anywhere near my laptop, there’s a good chance Pandora is playing the background.

MixTapes

If you’re looking for new hip hop songs that are spotted a different way, be sure to check out the following websites and their mix tapes…

DatPiff. And your limitless supply of mix tapes, most of which are very high quality. Definitely a resource for anyone interested in picking up the hottest new mix tapes.

ThatCrack. While their selection may be smaller than DatPiff, they don’t slack on quality: these are some of the highest mix tapes I’ve ever heard.

I’ll use these radio stations and websites to track down the rap songs from a wide variety of genres. It’s a great way to expose yourself to new artists for free!

Have a great day!

Buying rap beats online is quickly growing and it’s great to use the internet to bring talented producers and artists from different parts of the world together. However, like with any game, there are some players who do things right, and others who don’t. We’ve therefore compiled this simple list of tips for buying rap beats online in order to help aspiring artists out there pick the right website/producers to work with.

We now have four years experience selling rap beats online through our website, www.LaCantinaProductions.com and we hope that these tips will prove useful to you!

1. Music Licenses – Understand them

Know the difference between exclusive and non-exclusive licenses. An exclusive license will grant you the exclusive (hence the name) right to use the beats for your projects.

A non-exclusive license will give you the right to use the beat for your musical projects, however the producer retains the right to sell the beat to other artists too.

2. Music Licenses – Know which one to buy

Exclusive licenses can be expensive, but essential if you’re looking to commercially release an album. If you’re however recording a demo or mixtape, a non-exclusive license is fine, however make sure you check with the producer what rights you get as these will vary from site to site.

3. Prices, don’t pay too much!

Owners of beat sites often get carried away by their big ego’s and will charge inflated prices for standard beats.

A rough guideline for prices follows:

Non-Exclusive Licenses – $15 – $50

Exclusive Licenses – $100 – $1000

Of course, the above prices depend on the producer’s popularity and talent. However, we would not recommend paying more than $1000 for an exclusive license bought online from someone you have never met in person.

4. Websites, only buy from trusted ones

Any proper online business will make sure they have a trustworthy image. Therefore make sure that the site you’re buying from has at least one or two of these:

- Full contact details, phone number, email, mailing address

- Privacy Policy

5. Look for trust symbols

On top of the above, the website should also have third party trust symbols. These are certifications from other companies that prove the website is trustworthy and not fraudulent.

Some symbols to look for are:

- BBB Certification

- Paypal Verified

- Shopping reviews

- Hacker Safety Certifications

- Antivirus Safety Certifications

Also make sure these symbols link through to another page that explains what they mean and how the website in question fits the criteria.

6. Email the site and check if they reply

Crazy, but certain beat sites will not bother doing this. Would you want to do business with someone who doesn’t care about talking to you?

Also, this will prove that the website is a serious online business with a team of human beings running it properly.

7. Look for testimonials

This is not essential, but it’s always good if you can see that others have dealt with the site before and have been satisifed with their beats.

8. Avoid producers who only use a Soundclick/MySpace page to sell beats

A domain name costs less than $15 a year, surely it’s not a good sign if someone doesn’t even have the money to buy that and set up their own independent website?

9. Search for the site on Google

This is a quick easy way to check a site’s reputation. Do any bad comments show up, or anything else unusual?

10. Is the site alive?

Does anyone update it or is it dead? We’re all very busy making beats, but adding some small updates once in a while is within everyone’s reach. Therefore look for blog posts, new beat uploads and even small updates such as changing the current year noted on the site!

Interested in new hip hop song releases? From underground rap superstars like Atmosphere or Aesop Rock to Dirty South rap artists like Lil Wayne, here’s the best places to new hip hop song releases.

Radio Stations

True, radio stations have lost some of their influence thanks to the popularity of the Internet, though new songs generally get a lot of airplay here. Below you’ll find classic hip hop stations and a few online ones that have blown up recently…

Power106. The authority when it comes to new rap songs. Power 106 plays tracks from the hottest established rappers like Eminem, Lil Wayne and Kanye West, as well the up and comers like T.I and Flo Rida.

Hot97. Their tagline is “Hot97 Is Hip Hop and R&B” and with their track record of providing the hottest new beats and interviews, no one is about to say otherwise.

Power 105. Originally a soft rock radio station, Power105 now focuses on providing new and classic rap tracks. They also offer the latest freestyles from top artists to younger MCs looking to get noticed.

IMEEM. With IMEEM, listeners can make their own music playlists on the fly and incorporate a wide variety of musical styles such as underground rap old-school hip-hop and mainstream artists. Fans can save their playlists for later use and share it with other users on the site. If you’re looking for a new hip-hop song or freestyle this is the place to go.

Pandora. Without a doubt Pandora is one of my favorite sites what I’m looking for new music. All you have to do is type in the name of your favorite rapper Pandora creates a streaming playlist featuring related artists, based upon musical styles and lyrical content. It never ceases to amaze me how many rap artists I’ve come across using this site; it’s like fighting and you hit rap song every five minutes.or another great feature with Pandora is your ability to float for each song as its play. If you vote a song up, Pandora’s more likely to include that song again and your ongoing playlist; voted down and you may not see that same track for months to come, if at all.

MixTapes

Hip Hop music began with mixtapes, and these two websites keep the tradition going with a wide variety of new tracks mixed by DJs…

DatPiff. With a huge selection of original mix tapes to choose from, this is the true authority for anyone interested in hip hop mix tapes.

ThatCrack. Billets selection is not as large, the quality of their mixed tapes is on point. They also offer an audio section featuring rap freestyles.

If you’re searching for the hottest new hip hop song releases check out these sites, they’ll keep you listening for years to come!

Taxidermy Records is a new label in Portland that is dedicated to bringing creative, honest music to a wide audience. Currently focused on Northwest Hip Hop, … I was booking and running production with Anthony Sanchez at Berbati’s Pan under the title Portland Underground for almost 2 years before he was un-justly fired. I then went into some management with the Chicharones, Sleep of Oldominion, and Josh Martinez and started investing in some projects. …

Posted on 29 November 2009 by B-Double (10)

Even though the list was announced a while ago, the hard copy of XXL’s latest issue, featuring the top 100 hip-hop blog sites, hit the racks this week. Its a pretty good list – much more authentic than the widely dismissed VIBE list from a number of months earlier – and there are a lot of great sites that made it.

I am privileged to have chopped it up with a number of the good people on that list and I wanted to bust a few words on them – given how little XXL said on some of them.

Daily Mathematics

Combat Jack is a consummate hip-hop insider and a practicing attorney, so you know dude is no joke. Forget the press releases from PR hacks, I love reading about his run-ins with famous rappers and industry honchos. The best part about CJ is that he’s actually a real dude – never hesitates to drop in here at YFWB and lay down a comment, even though he doesn’t know me from Adam. He recently got a gig applying his rap hustle at XXL Magazine itself, and for frequent readers of Daily Math, its not a surprise.

Dallas Penn

Dallas is a hilarious writer/videographer/blogger, and he was kind enough to hit YFWB with a complement that now graces this site. But behind all the jokes and gags, Dallas is a true hip-hop head who understands his rap history and appreciates those who respect it. He gave me some great advice about writing on this here blog, which shows the kind of guy he is – building with other bloggers to make a better community.

The Rap Up

Rizoh over at TRU is hands down one of the realest dudes I have ever met since I started blogging. Even though he is one of the original hip-hop bloggers, Rizoh is the most unassuming and friendly cats I’ve had the privilege of dealing with. And the man knows his hip-hop, boy. He also happens to be a social media ninja. You want to know how to conquer Digg? He’s the guy to talk to. Learned much from “The Blogfather”.

Its The Real

The Rosenthal Brothers were kind enough to sit down for one of my first interviews. I was a fan, I reached out and they were happy to oblige. Its been dope to watch them take off and go from an ill concept to being known in the industry. And their videos are still well done. Still not sure why they never followed me on Twitter, though. Still sore about that.

Looking for new hip hop music? Whether it’s underground rap, R&B, Southern hip-hop or gangster rap, here’s some of the hottest places to find new hip hop music.

Radio Stations

While they may have lost some of their influence in the past few years due to Internet, radio stations still provide a great place to hear it music. I’ve included a standard radio stations as wills a few of their Internet counterparts…

Power106. Arguably the largest name in rap music today Power 106 plays at established artists such as Eminem, and Lil Wayne, as well as up and coming rap superstars like Drake, and Flo Rida.

Hot97.One of the most popular hip hop stations in history, Hot97 delivers fresh tracks from artists such as T.I., Outkast and Kanye West.

Power 105. They made the move from soft rock and never looked back In addition to fresh new music, they play old school hip and R&B

IMEEM. This website lets you create your own playlist from their gigantic database of music. You can save your playlists and share with others via the social network on their site. The new hip hop music section is on point, and offers a selection of new artists daily.

Pandora. Personally I love this site. To all you have to do is entering the name of your favorite artist, song or musical style and Pandora automatically creates a playlist for you based upon associated artists they think you would like. I can’t even begin to explain how any great to rap artists I’ve discovered using the site. Pandora also offers you the chance to vote on each song as the play, and will shift its playlist accordingly. If you’re looking to find a hottest new music as well as underground tracks you may have missed the first time around, Pandora is certainly a place to start.

MixTapes

Mixed tapes have always been an important part of hip-hop culture, and the following two websites let you hear your favorite songs put together a new and exciting ways…

So you want to listen to hip hop music? Whether it’s underground artists such as atmosphere, hard-core rap, old school hip hop or the hottest new artists come here some of the best places where you can listen to hip hop music…

Radio Stations

Hot97. This radio station is perhaps the most widely listened to of any hip-hop station in the United States today, and is undoubtedly the source for mainstream rap artists like Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne and 50 Cent.

Power 105. The station was originally a provider of soft rock, but underwent a serious overhaul to provide some of the hottest mainstream rappers and are the artists out there today.

Power106. The authority in rap music today Power 106 plays at established artists such as Eminem, and Nas, as well as up and coming rap superstars like Drake, Flo Rida and T.I..

IMEEM. This radio station gives listeners a chance to create their own playlists in a matter of minutes, and features an incredibly large selection of top hip-hop artists, old school grades, and even a respectable amount of underground rap artists.

Pandora. Is definitely one of my favorites on this list. With Pandora, you simply enter the name of an artist or musical style you like, and it automatically creates a playlist of related artists and musical styles that it thinks you would enjoy. As each song is played you have the option of voting at up or down, and Pandora adjusts accordingly. This is a great way for you to discover fresh new hip-hop music and rap artist that you may not have heard before. I’m continually amazed at the number of new artists I come by thanks to Pandora. If you want to listen to hip hop music in a new way, this is certainly the place to be.

MixTapes

DatPiff. Offers a huge selection of mix tapes from the top artists in again today. In addition, they have a wide selection of freestyles and music videos as well. You can search by artist or DJ.

ThatCrack. This may be the best new provider of hip-hop mix tapes on the Internet today. It offers streaming music, which means you don’t have to download the songs.

If you want to listen to hip hop music, these are without a doubt the best resources available today. From underground sensations to the most successful mainstream artists, they’ve got you covered.

Far as they know they’re publishing / some new school poetry. Let it be. ‘Cause / even that will do to turn the key. Doorways / into other worlds. The truth shall set you free.” I think the collection is brilliant. It transcends slam poetry … For hip hop heads who don’t read, (first of all you gotta, and) this book is a great, great place to start. It hits deep on so many levels. Plus, Saul Williams is the only hip hop artist I know that’ll rock a pink mohawk on stage. …

Kevin forgets more about hip-hop than most will ever know and he’s always willing to lend a hand. How he puts up so much original content on his site and not get burnt out is beyond me. He supports underground hip-hop and he recently … Ivan Rott spends a lot of time cooking up new content for you all to enjoy. HHIR is a rare combination of hip-hop, pop culture and politics – and Ivan knows both. I always thought that HHIR is one of the more underrated blogger sites, …

Hip Hop download resources are abundant online, yet some are slow and unsafe. Here’s a list of places you can find hip hop downloads for a rap beats, albums, singles and mixtapes for cheap…

Mp3.com. This website offers legal downloads of your favorite hip hop artists, songs and the top new releases. While not solely focused on the rap genre, it does offer an extensive selection of artists; plus, you can always pick up a George Clinton album while you’re there!

EZ-Tracks is another hip hop download resource worth its weight in gold. Most of their tracks are free, meaning you can explore a wide variety of sub-genres in hip hop without breaking the bank. Admittedly, they tend to focus on mainstream rappers and singers, which makes it hard to find solid underground hip hop artists, though their popular selection is quite varied. For underground artists, I recommend the following source…

Internet radio is a great way to find new music, and doesn’t require any downloads. My personal favorite is Pandora; simply enter in the name of an artist, song or keyword and Pandora serves up a playlist of groups it thinks you would be interested in. You can vote each song up or down as its played, and Pandora adjusts its recommendations accordingly. I’ve found tons of great new artists using this website!

For the best selection in mixtapes, top instrumentals and beats, check out RapGodfathers. Not only can you download those underground hits you’ve been searching for, there’s a huge selection of mixtapes and remixes of classic tracks you’ve never even heard of. I highly recommend this site for anyone in search of some under the radar tracks. They also have an impressive selection of videos, including major record releases to those that never made it to MTV.

Remember to check out the legal aspect of any hip hop download. While many claim it is legal, some are copyright infringement. Others, such as Pandora, have negotiated a special license that allows them to play a certain number of songs for a listener per hour. This prevents hackers from downloading every song imaginable from an artist (at least in theory) while providing the artist with exposure they would not have had otherwise. The ones mentioned here are legal, safe and fast: stick to these and you should have no worries about picking up your favorite rap artists top new beats, music and videos.

A hip hop music video is immediately recognizable in its style; from bubble lenses to camera shots from the ground up, people know what they’re looking at right away. Here’s several places online where you can watch a hip hop music video for free, download award winning songs from hot new artists, and basically turn your computer into your own personal MTV…

AOLMusic is a great place to start. They’ve got a wide selection of hip hop videos that are updated constantly. They include a New Artist section which allows you stay on top of your favorite artists new releases. The navigation is clean and easy to find what you’re looking for. However, if you’re looking for underground rap videos, this is not the place. For that you need to check out…

UndergroundHipHop. Their video selection is top notch and geared towards underground artists you would never, ever see on AOL. Artists like Brother Ali, Kool Keith and Atmospshere are all well represented. The viewers are entertaining as well; these guys and gals have no problem telling it like is on a new video release, regardless of the artist!

Interested in getting crunk? The Dirty South is well represented on VideoCure, which at the time of writing had over 750 videos on the Dirty South alone. In addition to southern hard hitters like Lil’ Wayne, they’ve got a large selection of compilation videos as well. For anyone on MySpace, VideoCure makes it easy to embed a hip hop music video directly onto your MySpace page (exactly like YouTube).

MusicVideoRap airs streaming (meaning no downloads) uncensored music videos. Like the other sites listed, there’s the standards New Rap Releases, as well as a series of Freestyles by aritsts like Snoop Dogg and Eminem. What separates this site from the others is the extensive number of articles on all things hip hop: including new aritsts, freestyle methods and reviews of top rap artists.

These four websites will provide you the chance to explore how different sub genres approach the hip hop music video- such as the underground’s use of narratives versus the party atmosphere of the Dirty South- and hopefully provide hours of entertainment as well! These are the channels for the hottest rap and hip hop artists songs and videos, most of which you can watch for free. I believe that in a short amount of time music videos will have dominated the Internet, and watched almost exclusively online instead of on stations like MTV.

Have a great day!

Students get schooled on hip-hop at Minn. college – Yahoo! News

ST. PAUL, Minn. – DJ Freddy Fresh slaps a vinyl record on the turntable, cues it up and tells a student, “Remember, the top of the note was there, right? Grab it.”

The student places his hand on the disc. Freddy Fresh sets the tonearm down on a record rotating on a second turntable. He starts the first record spinning as a percolating beat fills the classroom, then twiddles some knobs.

“Bing, bing, boom. There it is,” Freddy Fresh says while showing the student the precise beat where to stop the platter. “Let’s hear it. Scratch a little so we can hear the top of it.”

The student “scratches” the record, moving his left hand back and forth, then lets the disc go.

“Perfect,” Freddy Fresh declares.

A professional DJ since 1992, Freddy Fresh (real name Fredrick Schmid) is among the new teachers brought in by McNally Smith College of Music for a hip-hop studies program that school officials say is the first in the nation.

The private downtown St. Paul college — where rapper-actor Ice Cube already funds a scholarship for music technology studies — began the hip-hop program in September and hopes the first students, after completing a recorded project and a live performance, get their diploma certificates at commencement next summer.

Even though hip-hop is only 30 years old, McNally Smith officials say the urban culture of rap has become a dominating commercial force and deserves serious study. Students say they enjoy the chance to learn from established rappers and DJs.

“What I like the most about it is there are actual artists teaching us, as opposed to just some guy coming in a suit and tie and being like, ‘This is what hip-hop is,’” said student Tim Wagner, 19, who came to McNally Smith to learn studio production and polish his MC skills.

“They know what they’re talking about because they’ve done it.”

College classes on the language of hip-hop or how to work turntables are not new. Berklee College of Music in Boston held its annual Business of Hip-Hop Symposium in October and has had visits from pioneering hip-hop DJ Grandmaster Flash and rapper Chuck D of Public Enemy, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison recently hosted a semester-long fall lecture series on hip-hop. Marcyliena Morgan, a professor at Harvard University, founded The Hiphop Archive in 2002.

But McNally Smith is offering a full, 45-credit, three-semester hip-hop program. Courses include “Deejay Techniques,” “Diaspora of African Music” and “The Language of Rap and Spoken Word III.” The school hopes that hip-hop graduates will then enter McNally Smith’s two- or four-year programs, where those students can apply some of their credits, said Cliff Wittstruck, dean of academic affairs.

The hip-hop program grew out of a summer workshop at McNally Smith that attracted 22 young people, mainly of high school age. When it was time to draw up courses for the college program, organizers made sure “that it was not just something that was sort of, ‘Oh, we’re going to have a hip-hop diploma and somebody grab the graffiti font and we’ll be all set,’” said workshop director Sean McPherson, bassist and leader of the Twin Cities hip-hop band Heiruspecs.

Program coordinator Toki Wright, a Twin Cities MC and poet, says the program aims to teach all the behind-the-scenes roles in hip-hop: promoters, DJs and producers. Classes on hip-hop business practices, music production and history are among the course offerings.

“So you don’t have to be a great rapper to still receive a diploma,” Wright said.

Fourteen students — 12 men, two women — are enrolled in the hip-hop program, which has eight teachers. Overall enrollment at McNally Smith stands at 685, and the school — founded in 1985 by two guitarists — has 118 faculty members.

McNally Smith President Harry Chalmiers says rapping — although it sounds spontaneous — is not easy.

“The best rap is fine art. It is poetry. It is music. It is rhythm. It is color. It is living history. It is of political, societal commentary. It’s significant work. None of that is easy,” Chalmiers said.

Margret Wander, who raps under the name Dessa Darling with the Minneapolis hip-hop collective Doomtree, had been teaching songwriting at McNally Smith when the school invited her to become a teacher in the hip-hop program. She says she could have used some formal training when she was learning to rap.

“I did a lot of my learning in a Festiva parked outside an Old Country Buffet while one of the guys who was my mentor was pounding on the hood of the car. He goes, ‘Nope, you’re not getting it.’ And I continued to rap and rap and rap until I got it right,” Dessa said.

“And I learned it, but I’d loved to have not had to have sat in a Festiva for six hours.”

A hip-hop music industry pro agrees. Ted Lucas, founder and CEO of Slip-N-Slide Records in South Florida, says marketing, promoting and getting your record played are all skills that a hip-hop artist could stand to learn in school.

“I think it’s a great thing. I wish someone would have had something like this for me when I first started,” says Lucas. “It took me a long time to learn this business. It wasn’t something that just happened overnight.”

Freddy Fresh, the McNally Smith teacher, calls DJ’ing — seamlessly mixing songs at a disco, party or wedding reception — an art.

“It’s the knowledge of the music. It’s mapping out the tempos on your songs. It’s the ability to blend smoothly records that have similar tempo ranges to provide a fluid, nice mix during the evening to keep people on the dance floor. There’s many elements to it,” he explains.

Toyosi Duroshola, the student working the turntable in class with Freddy Fresh, says he appreciates learning from a professional. A rapper since he was 13, Duroshola plans to complete McNally Smith’s hip-hop program and sees a possible future as a DJ.

“I’m able to learn this, make some money off of it,” Duroshola says. “This could actually turn into my passion, instead of being an MC.”

The History Of Alternative Clothing

Alternative clothing refers to the kind of dress that people of the Hip Hop culture wear. When the Hip Hop culture came about in the 1970’s, it came across as a rebellious and shocking way of portraying fashion. During those times, urban and skate clothing was considered as being very controversial, causing this kind of fashion statement to go underground.

There are many designers in the history of Hip Hop, who have been contributing a huge resource of designs to the world. Right from torn t-shirts and offensive clothing, this kind of clothing has eventually matured as one of the most popular kind of clothing that people of the new generation sport. Alternative clothing had its origins from right here in America.

The accessories that go with alternative clothing initially looked weird and people who wore it were branded as being unconventional, usually being looked down upo by people who are into mainstream clothing. Controversial images and patches along with studded jackets was the way the Hip Hop culture initially started.

From there to now, the world has evolved to accept the culture. In fact, the minute you walk on the street you are most likely to find good many people sporting skate clothing. When it comes to the footwear that the urban dressers wore, they usually wore motorcycle boots. However, that slowly changed and people started getting into the basketball culture and started wearing sneakers to mimic basketball stars.

This was just the beginning alternative clothing. A huge revolution happened when the 1980s welcomed the Hip Hop culture with open arms. With the different accessories that the Hip Hop enthusiasts wore, people started getting used to the fashion statement that skate clothing was making on the world.

Since most of the enthusiasts are skaters it started being known as “skate clothing” Skate clothing came to take on wearing “hoodies”. Initially this was not accepted, but soon grew in popularity along with skate boarding.

In today’s world, urban and alternative clothing has become one of the most creative ways that people are able to express what they feel and about how they desire to make a difference.

Why Urban Wear Is Pretty Cool Right Now

Fashion changes regularly, year on year, month on month. From the sixties onward trends have been set by the famous, and followed by the general public. Urban wear is an interesting category within the fashion industry because of the demographic of the buyers of this style of clothing, and the inspiration in the designs used. From Ed Hardy and Jack and Jones to more high end designers such as Calvin Klein and Gucci, this particular clothing niche has been embraced widely across the whole fashion industry.

The reasons for the growing popularity in urban wear can be traced back to its origins in the early 1980s. Hip hop was evolving as a unique and original style of music amongst the young, black community in New York. To accompany this new style of music, a new style of dressing developed. Loose and baggy was the order of the day, and associations between the rap performers and the clothes that they wore quickly spread. Moving forward a couple of decades and this new style is still prevalent and still popular. It has changed obviously, but the basics have remained pretty similar to the its origins. Not content with just starting a trend, many rap stars have their own clothing ranges, which can make them as much money as their actual records.

Urban wear has spread from its origins on the East Coast of the USA to become a worldwide fashion trend. No longer underground, this style of clothing is as popular amongst the white middle class as it is with its young black exponents. Clothing ranges from companies such as Jack and Jones have combined the surfer ethics with the urban style to produce loose fitting jeans and tops that have a timeless quality to them, which is popular around the world, and covers most age groups. Definitely not formal, but still effortlessly trendy, urban wear appears to be the one fashion trend that will endure from year to year, rather than disappear overnight. After some time, they met up with the owner of Dr. Jays, Elliot Betesh, who made a proposal about creating the next big thing in the world of fashion. The brothers decided to team up with him and created akademiks.

Putin wins respect at hip-hop party – Yahoo! News

MOSCOW (Reuters) –
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin rubbed shoulders with rappers and was hailed with “respect” in a television show Friday that could help boost his flagging ratings.

Putin, wearing a turtleneck sweater and jacket, went on stage to present awards to participants in “Battle for Respect,” a hip-hop music contest run by Muz TV, a Russian rival to MTV.

“It would have been cool to record a joint track with Vladimir Putin because he is a legendary man and our idol,” sang rapper Zhigan who won the contest. “Let’s make so much noise in his honor that the whole world can hear.”

A presenter told the audience of about 100 young rappers in a makeshift television studio in an abandoned Moscow factory building that he wanted “smiles to stay on your faces throughout the evening.”

Despite hip-hop’s violent image, Putin had a stern message for the rappers about healthy living.

“I do not think that ‘top-rock’ or ‘down-rock’ breakdance technique is compatible with alcohol or drugs,” Putin told cheering hip-hoppers who responded with chants of “Respect, Vladimir Vladimirovich.”

Putin’s approval ratings last month had the sharpest fall since he stepped down as Kremlin chief in May 2008. His rating fell 6 percentage points to 66 percent on October 24-25, according to leading pollster FOM. [ID:nL2370140]

Putin’s aides responded with plans for a flurry of prime ministerial appearances, including a televised question-and-answer session with the Russian people this month.

Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied there was a link between the hip-hop appearance and the ratings fall.

“Putin has a high and stable rating which does not require any support,” said Peskov. “The main goal of this event was to contribute to the promotion of a healthy lifestyle.”

Putin, who stepped down as president last year, remains Russia’s most popular and powerful politician. Most Russians believe he will run for President again in 2012.

Putin’s carefully orchestrated image also include bare-chested photos on fishing trips in Siberia, appearances with rare animals such as Siberian tigers, leopards and beluga whales and encounters with fringe social groups like bikers.

“He communicates to all social groups. Hip-hop culture is very popular and youths from all corners of our country are fans of this culture,” Peskov said.

Students get schooled on hip-hop at Minn. college – Yahoo! Philippines News

ST.

Paul college _ where rapper-actor Ice Cube already funds a scholarship for music technology studies _ began the hip-hop program in September and hopes the first students, after completing a recorded project and a live performance, get their diploma certificates at commencement next summer.

Fourteen students _ 12 men, two women _ are enrolled in the hip-hop program, which has eight teachers. Overall enrollment at McNally Smith stands at 685, and the school _ founded in 1985 by two guitarists _ has 118 faculty members.

McNally Smith President Harry Chalmiers says rapping _ although it sounds spontaneous _ is not easy.

Freddy Fresh, the McNally Smith teacher, calls DJ’ing _ seamlessly mixing songs at a disco, party or wedding reception _ an art.

Australia’s New Subculture

They dress like their going to the gym. They have undercuts and spiky hair. They have a few tattoos, hidden from their parents view. They listen to R&B and rap. They hang out in garages, playing cards, swearing and smoking pot. Their ideology of masculinity is a man that won’t take ‘no’ for an answer, has control over his ‘Mrs.’s’ and can stand up for himself. They speak with slang derived from the African American slang, with a few Arabic words here and there. They drive fast, done up cars with controversial personalized number plates. Females are not welcome in this gathering nor are adults. Who are they? They are the Lebanese youth. Their offshoot, ‘hanging out’, is the symbolic axis and working social hub. This subculture is heavily reliant on being ‘in the know’- on being cool, calm and dangerous. If one were to describe the social culture of this group, it would have to be ‘coolness’. But what is this cultural value? How is it embodied? How is it displayed? Why it is so important to the Lebanese youth? What are its social uses, its demographics, its biases and discriminations?

They belong to a unitary culture. They maintain the same dress codes, dance styles, music genres and catalogue of authorized and illicit rituals. They are a subculture from an ethnic culture. They generally congregate on the basis of shared ethnicity and ideology, their consumption of the same media and, most importantly, their preference for youth of the same ethnicity to themselves.

Taking part in this subculture builds affinities, socialising participants into knowledge of the likes and dislikes, meanings and values of the culture. This community will last for several years until these boys decide to settle down through primarily marriage. This subculture will then melt into the ‘mainstream’.

The opposition of the ‘mainstream’ is undoubtedly how many constituents of youth subcultures characterize their own behaviour. However we can’t take youthful discourses literally; they are not a transparent window on the world. This is a constant mistake that has been made by cultural studies. They have been inadequately critical of sub cultural ideologies, first, because they were preoccupied by the task of perforating and challenging prevailing ideologies and, second, because they were biased and tended to correspond with the sub cultural discourse
1000
s of the youth cultures they study. Academics have acclaimed subcultures, while youth have celebrated the ‘underground’. Where young people have condemned the ‘commercial’, scholars have criticised ‘hegemony’; where one has grieved over ‘selling out’, the other has conceived ‘incorporation’.

Youth visualize their own and other social groups through sub cultural ideologies, they declare their idiosyncratic nature and assert that they are not nameless affiliates of an undistinguished heap. The cultural theorists are not giving non-biased explanations of the way things really are, but incorporate ideologies that fulfil their specific cultural agenda. One should therefore not simply delve into the way of life of a cluster community, but consider the way they make ‘meaning the service of power’.

The distinctions made by the Lebanese youth are not simply affirmations of equal difference; they entail a strong claim to authority and presume the inferiority of others. They are challenge the weight of, namely the police and laws established by the government and see other sub cultural ethnic groups as inferior to them.

Within this subculture, elevated levels of income and property do not associate with high levels of cultural capital, as the two often conflict. Comments about the ‘nouveau riche’ reveal the likely frictions between those affluent in cultural capital but fairly poor in economic capital (like those Lebanese youth that are academics) and those rich in economic capital but less affluent in cultural capital (like professional football players).

Therefore, the third category-social capital-that stems not from what you know or what you have, but from who know, can be attributed fore mostly to the subculture of the Lebanese youth. Connections in the form of friends, relations, associations and acquaintances can all bestow status. ‘Tell the boys that you know so and so and watch them worship you’.

The ‘second nature’ of their knowledge is a quality that members of this subculture must possess. Nothing diminishes capital more than the spectacle of someone trying to hard. For example, a subdued and pale looking Anglo Saxon male attempting to act, dress and associate himself with the subculture of the Lebanese youth.

K. Gelder and S. Thornton argue that ‘the difference between being in or out of fashion, high or low in sub cultural capital, correlates in complex ways with degrees of media coverage, creation and exposure’. In regards to the aforementioned subculture, commercial news and the content of their broadcasting are discussed often amongst each other. They are in passionate resistance to the negative portrayal of their subculture. It can be argued therefore that due to the fact that their subculture is used as the ‘topic of the day’ so readily, that this actually encourages them to become increasingly rebellious against the ‘mainstream’ and forms of authority.

The convertibility of cultural capital into economic capital is what ultimately defines cultural capital. Whilst sub cultural capital may not convert into economic capital, in being a market niche, with the same ease or financial reward as cultural capital, a variety of occupations or increased capital for existing occupations can be gained as a result of ‘coolness’. American clothes designers, especially sportswear designers, such as Nike and Adidas, American artists of hip-hop, rap and R&B and sad to say drug dealers all make a living from their sub cultural capital.

Sub cultural capital is not as class-bond as cultural capital, even though it converts into economic capital. Class does not correlate in any uninterrupted way with levels of youthful sub cultural capital. For instance, it would not be uncommon for a Lebanese boy that was raised in an area that was densely populated with Lebanese households, like Bankstown, to remain dressing, acting and speaking in the same way if he was to move to an area that was densely populated with Anglo-Saxons and of a cl
ass.

Gender, after age, is the social difference along which sub cultural capital is aligned most analytically to. Generally, the girls associated with this subculture invest more of their time and identity in doing well at school. The boys, in contrast, spend more time and money on going out, listening to music and ‘hanging out with the boys’.

The ‘refusal of complicity’ might be said to categorise the majority of Lebanese youth. These youth are not as anchored in their social place as those younger and older than themselves as they are not settled with a partner nor have they integrated into ‘Australian culture’. By investing in this act of leisure, Lebanese youth further reject being fixed socially. They can postpone ‘social aging’ or that ‘slow renunciation or disinvestment’ which leads people to regulate their goals to their purposes, to support their state, become what they are and make do with what they have. Acting as a barrier against social aging may be one of the reasons as to why it is so attractive to people well beyond their youth.

Lebanese youth can be seen as temporarily taking pleasure in the taste of independence. Freedom from necessity, therefore, does not mean that youth have wealth so much that they are exempt from adult commitments to the accumulation of economic capital. They simply reveal a methodical dedication, which allows practises that are discouraged by the mainstream.

The term ‘subculture’ is therefore useful as a means for analysing the position and experiences of the Lebanese youth of Australia. Sub cultural capital is the key player of a substitute chain of command in which the affiliation of age, gender, sexuality and race are operational in order to keep the resolves of class, income and occupation aside. Sub cultural capital discloses itself most clearly by what it dislikes and by what it definitely isn’t. The vast majority of Lebanese youth distinguish themselves against the mainstream that, to some degree, can be seen to stand in for the masses- this distance is a measure of their cultural worth. Sub cultural ideology unconditionally gives alternative interpretations and values to young peoples, particularly young men’s. It reinterprets the social world. The Lebanese youth jockey for social power through these popular distinctions; they are favouritisms by which members are both given social statuses and endeavour for a meaning of self-worth. This perspective foresees popular culture as a multi-dimensional social space rather than as a flat culture or as simply the end of the social ladder. The Lebanese youth should therefore not be categorised through their cultural differences as being ‘resistances’ to hierarchy or to the isolated cultural supremacy of some ruling body. They should be looked at as the microstructures of power entailed in the cultural competition that goes on between more closely associated social groups.

How To Promote Yourself Online As An Independent Hip Hop Rap Artist

Are you an independent hip hop artist wanting to promote yourself on the Internet?

Online, people are not going to be typing your name in the search engines to find you unless your a celebrity who as already made it. You must know how to strategically promote yourself.

Here is how you can attract new fans.

First, build a single page website. This website should be a single page website that serves one pupose, to get people to subscribe to your mailing list or fan club as most sites would call it.

This web page should have a sample of your music. The page should also invite them to join your mailing list to get more samples of your work. 1-3 Full-length songs.

Once they get on your mailing list, you can offer to sell them your full album at a discount. Make it a one-time-offer that is automatically presented new subscribers right after they opt-in to your mailing list.

You should have an autoresponder mailing list in place that sends out a sequence of follow-up messages, so that your fans don’t forget who you are. You can simply share some background information with them, and other personal information that you don’t mind revealing.

Sharing personal information helps to develop a relationship with your new fans, so that they begin to know, like, and trust you. Every time you release a new album you have an established fan base that you can email.

You can also email them other hip hop related products. Most of your fans will be hip hop artists themselves. There are affiliate programs that pay you commissions to promote their hip hop related products to your fans.

Royalty free hip hop beats and hip hop beat making software are affiliate programs I promote to my mailing lists on a hip hop site I am currently joint venturing with my sister on.

You can also promote hip hop cd’s from Amazons affiliate program or some other music site with an affiliate program. Hip Hop clothes, dance videos, and information products, are yet a few other products you can promote.

The Green Side Of White R&B
by: Gian Fiero

What’s the deal with so many white music artists singing black music? Why do white artists who sing black music get better promotion than black artists? Why is R&B music now synonymous with Hip-Hop?

These are some of the hot topics that often come up in private conversations with my industry associates and colleagues. I will attempt to shed some much needed light on these delicate, sensitive and somewhat controversial issues.

To really understand the phenomenon of white music artists singing R&B, you should begin with an examination of the motivation and purpose behind the establishment of “black music divisions” at record companies in the 60’s. While the success of Motown as a black owned operation has been well-documented and highly publicized, many of the competing record labels of that time lacked the personnel to adequately exploit the abundance of musically talented black teens.

White owned record companies shrewdly appointed black music executives who were more in tune and in touch with black music (and the black artists that created and performed it), to help interface with them. This was, after all, a time when race relations were strained and tentative.

Many record companies and radio stations took note of the increasing
popularity of R&B music among white teenagers and attempted to preserve racial barriers by denying them access to it. Their denial constituted a potential economic problem since the music industry (like most industries) thrives on supply and demand. Their solution: provide their darling teenaged kids with a “white” alternative; someone who “sounded” black and performed “black” music, a la Elvis Presley, whose popularity was soaring. It wasn’t uncommon for records in that era often to have two different versions – a white version and a black version – which was serviced to the appropriate audience.

In the 70’s, the push toward equality and peace gave birth to a more
gregarious and unified music industry. Top bands like Sly & The Family
Stone, Tower of Power, Earth Wind & Fire, and The Commodores emerged
and enjoyed success throughout the 70’s, but many lacked crossover
appeal and forced black music executives to search for other viable options in order to save their jobs. One option was Disco – the hot novelty genre.

Disco was more than a new genre; it was a cultural release from the
lingering social anxieties and racial tensions of the 60’s and emerged as the dominant format because of its mass market appeal and universal acceptance. The music industry eventually sobered up from the lecherous activities and rampant drug abuse of the disco era in 1979, just in time to endure the worst financial year of its existence.

With slumping record sales and a gluttony of music acts that were signed to perform disco songs, the R&B music community returned to its soulful roots and searched desperately for an answer to rectify the problems that plagued it. The answer wasn’t written on the wall, but it was found in the album “Off The Wall” by Michael Jackson, which helped to transition R&B music back into a more “Pop-friendly” format; a la Motown.

While Michael captured the heart’s and imaginations of white America with his unhuman dance moves, there were plenty of black music pioneers upholding the funky values and virtues of black music as we
we marched into the techno era of the 80’s. R&B music seemed to
undergo a much needed resurgence.

The R&B bands of the 70’s started to downsize in personnel as more emphasis was being placed on solo acts (a la Michael Jackson) and vocal groups. For the R&B music artist, the advent of technology superseded the need to be backed up by a band, ushering in the producer era which R&B music is heavily predicated on today.

It was also at this time that many record companies began merging and restructuring – a move that resulted in the loss of hundreds of jobs for black music executives who were worked in the black music divisions.

Shortly thereafter, we witnessed the birth of “blue-eyed soul” as
white music artists who were performing R&B music begun to receive heavy and steady financial backing by their record labels. Hall & Oates enjoyed unprecedented success in the early and mid-80’s a litmus test for the acceptance of white artists performing R&B under the guise of Pop music.

While Hall & Oates may have raised a few eyebrows in the R&B music community, eyes were opened widely when George Michael, a former
member of Pop teen group Wham!, won a Grammy for the best “black” album in 1989. It was the first time in history that a white solo music artist topped the R&B charts. The R&B music community was outraged as veteran black music artists Freddie Jackson and Gladys Knight denounced the political voting practices of the Academy that renders the nominations.

While the award was well-deserved in terms of record sales and radio airplay, the color lines of who qualified as a “black” music artist had been redefined. When the smoke cleared, the music industry in general, and R&B music community in particular, would both be changed forever.

As we stood on the doorsteps of the 90’s, more black music executives lost their jobs as record companies continued the trend of merging, restructuring and downsizing in an effort to diversify their business interests and increase their profits.

Rap music was (finally) being fully embraced as a commercially
viable genre and record companies moved quickly to cash in on it. The appeal of low investments, and (potentially) high returns, constituted a major shift in business practices at record companies, and black music artists found themselves jockeying for position on the
revamped priority lists of their now predominantly white music
executives. After all, Rap was already achieving magical “underground” sales.

All the record companies needed to do was bring it to the surface and supply their distribution and marketing resources them. Since much of the music was already recorded, they could also circumvent many of the
recording costs as well. While the music industry made an overt
and deliberate attempt to position itself to supply what appeared to be an insatiable demand for Rap music, it lost sight of the distinction between R&B music, and Rap music.

R&B music lovers helplessly watched as orders came down from white music executives to incorporate elements of Rap music into R&B songs to make them more competitive with Rap, since Rap music artists posed a clear and tangible threat to the record sales of R&B music artists.

At the time, Mariah Carey and Color Me Badd were enjoying newfound
stardom that came (once again) as a result of white music executives
pushing a novelty agenda of white music artists performing R&B music.
Both of the aforementioned acts were initially viewed (by black audiences) as alternatives to their black competitors (Whitney Houston and Boyz II Men respectively), but with such strong marketing and promotional campaigns, both Mariah Carey and Color Me Badd were able to establish their own identity.

Today, the trend continues with white music executives diligently marketing and promoting the novelty agenda of white music artists such as Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera, Joss Stone, Anastacia, etc. singing R&B. Some insiders say that the music industry continues to deliberately and intentionally find alternatives to black music artists to service to white
audiences such as Britney Spears, who was presented as an alternative to Janet Jackson, and Nelly Furtado, who draws similarities to Erykah Badu, you decide.

While some will argue that it’s not a simple matter of black versus white since some of the aforementioned music artists are not “white” but are of different ethnicities or even “part” black, the fact is that the widely held opinion in the black community is that if you don’t look black (possessing obvious African American features), then you are not. You are something else other than black; and “white” becomes a description of an unknown racial category.

The new business model of the music industry has created new
opportunities for black entrepreneurs, but many of them lack the financial resources to take advantage of them. As a result they are often forced to participate in the production of Rap music, or R&B music with Rap production as they try to manufacture or supply product and artists that will enable them to embark upon partnerships and joint ventures with the same record companies that dissolved their black music divisions in the first place.

History and research shows that the music industry has continued to
systematically reduce the role of the black music executive. Many of those who remain are often relegated to the now dispensable role of liaison, gatekeeper and hand-holder for troubled rap acts in this new Hip-Hop era. A far cry from a time when they were once responsible for finding, developing and supporting premier black music artists who created some of the greatest music that we now view as the soundtrack to the this country’s history.

Those songs are still the choice of middle-aged Americans who tune into oldieradio stations across the country that have adopted “Classic Soul” as a new format. Where does that leave R&B
music artists of today? They are left to compete or join forces with
rap artists since they have been lumped into the same
“Urban” or “Hip-Hop” music category.

The formulaic use of R&B to inject a commercial element into Rap
music has contributed significantly to the fusion, and confusion regarding the distinction of both genres. This can be traced back to the 80’s when R&B acts such as Lakeside and Confunksion had huge hits
with songs that incorporated Rap (“Fantastic Voyage,” “Electric
Lady,” and “Square Biz”), R&B music embarked upon a trial marriage that turned out to be a permanent one.

R&B is now used to bolster the talent level perception, black
audience appeal, and record sales of white music artists in
every genre. Even Country (a genre that is guarded by a closed-knit circle of protective white executives), borrows heavily from R&B.

Country is a genre that is ripe for infiltration by conventional R&B artists, but unlike R&B music – which has become a community genre with no one race retaining the inherent rights to perform it – the
likelihood of that occurring is slim because of the unquestioned and
unchallenged exclusion of other races.

The significant issue in white R&B music artists versus black
R&B music artists can be narrowed down to one question: who gets the greater commitment and promotion from their record companies to service a larger audience of consumers?

When one considers the commitment level, dedicated resources, and promotional opportunities which are more abundant for white R&B music artists, and that blacks only account for 15% of the population, and that white music artists inherit a larger audience to begin with, understanding the green side of white R&B becomes much easier.
