“Two summers ago I was lucky enough to catch the Paid Dues Tour at New York City’s Nokia Theatre in Times Square. I was particularly excited for it because the lineup included a bunch of artists I’d never seen in concert before: Kidz in the Hall, dudes from Boot Camp Clik, Blackalicious, GZA, all culminating in what I hoped would be a satisfying set from the godfather of hip-hop, Rakim.

I remember the show with particular clarity because my boys and I endured an hour-and-a-half-long train ride that should’ve only lasted twenty-five minutes. Here’s how it all breakdowns: Last August, Jay-Z got somewhat friendly with New York Governor David Paterson. In the past, the two have been seen dining and spending time together in the Hamptons. In steps AEG (Aqueduct Entertainment Group), a group with plans to build a racino (that’s a racing track and casino) at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York. Paterson’s goal in tapping AEG was to turn the location into a glamorous, state-of-the-art gaming facility. Concert review: Jay-Z at American Airlines Center

Jay-Z commands a stage. The influential rapper performed for 12,000 fans Tuesday night at American Airlines Center, bringing with him a full band including a horn section, percussionist and DJ.

A skyscraper-like light display at the back of the stage immediately looked like the New York skyline, a nod to his hometown, of course. A variety of images were projected throughout the two-hour show, making it all the more striking.

Jay-Z had the lower platform to himself and he filled it up robustly. He’s tall, imposing, an intense presence. His rapping flow is fast but clear. He doesn’t chew his words. B.I.G.’s Estate Hit With $5 Mil Lawsuit Over B.I.G. Home Vids

(AllHipHop News) Faith Evans has been hit with a lawsuit over personal home videos of Christopher “Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace.

Kaushi Entertainment and Dro-Entertainment filed their lawsuit in L.A. County Superior Court, claiming that they struck a deal with Evans in February of 2007 to sell the personal videos featuring B.I.G. for $30,000.

Kaushi Entertainment claims they were supposed to purchase the films from RocDarling Films, a company owned by B.I.G.‘s associate, Damion “D-Roc” Butler.

Federal Investigation to Probe Jay-Z Racino Venture

(AllHipHop News) Jay-Z’s relationship with NY Governor David Paterson is one of the points of interest in a federal investigation into AEG’s multi-billion dollar deal for the Aqueduct Race Track racino.

The issue revolves around whether the bid selection process was unethical. Questions have arose following AEG’s successful bid since they courted Jay-Z, a good friend of Gov. Paterson, several months before the racino selection was completed.

Last month, Governor Patterson awarded AEG (Aqueduct Entertainment Group) with the contract to upgrade the existing Aqueduct Race Track venue, the only one located within the New York City limits.

In the summer of mid 70’s the ABA and the NBA merger took place. According to the terms of the merger four of the total eleven teams of ABA were included in NBA. To date they have bagged two championship titles and one Division title. While a member of ABA and three Division titles while they were in NBA. In its history with ABA that spans nine years it has bagged two Conference titles that took place in 2002 and 2003. The team was led by Julius Erving at that time.

The early nineties team included several young talented players namely Derrick Coleman, Drazen Petrovic and Kenny Anderson. Their head coach was Chuck Daly. With collective efforts they managed to post a wining record of 43-39 in season 1992-93. But unfortunately they lost in the very first round of the playoffs. Post 2000-2001 season several players were traded in exchange for Jason Kidd. This acquisition proved favorable for the team as Kidd steered the team to an NBA Finals appearance where they were defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers.

The franchise was sold in 2004 owing to the inability of securing a deal the New York arena. It was bought for a whooping 300 million Dollars by a group that was led by Bruce Ratner. He beat Charles Kushner and Jon Corzine who were also interested in buying the franchise. After sale the team was expected to be relocated to New York. In 2005 an official announcement was made for relocating the team to Brooklyn. The star singer Jay-Z is also a member of the group that owns the team. It is being planned to either rename the team as Brooklyn Nets or some other name in context of its location.

Following two rather very disappointing seasons, Vince Carter’s acquisition was made in exchange for Alonzo Mourning in 2001. Together with Kidd, Carter steered the team to becoming the final seed in the Eastern Conference whereas previously they lagged ten games behind. The start to 2005-06 season was a slow one as they struggled at 9-12 in their first 21 games. But after power play by Carter, Kidd and Jefferson the team managed to win the last 10 games. Some of the players that are presently a member of the team are Collins, Jefferson, Carter, Kidd, Wright and Robinson.

Having sold more than 100 million albums, the forlorn king of pop will receive a Diamond Award at the industry ceremony.

WMA founder Melissa Corken said “We are thrilled to be bringing the World Music Awards to London, the music capital of the world,” quickly adding “the presence of Michael Jackson is very exciting for us.”

Jackson went into reclusion after his acquittal from child molestation charges in June of last year. He left the United States soon after and has spent time in Bahrain and Ireland.

The World Music Awards were held in Monaco for 15 years before moving to the United States in 2004 and 2005. This year’s event at London’s Earls Court Arena is to be hosted by Lindsay Lohan, with performances from Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Katie Melua and Andrea Bocelli.

Previous recipients of the Diamond Award include Rod Stewart, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion.

The World Music Awards was founded in 1989 as an international awards show that annually honors recording artists based on their popularity, and worldwide sales figures, which are provided by the various organizations including record companies and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

The awards show is conducted under the patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert of Monaco, Monte Carlo. Until 2003 the show was conducted in Monte Carlo.

The 2004 show was held in Las Vegas (USA) on September 15. The 2005 show was held at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles, California with simultaneous broadcasts to North and South America, Australia, Japan and South East Asia, all of mainland China, New Zealand, all of Africa and the Middle East, and all of Europe, reaching an estimated worldwide audience of one billion viewers, in over 160 countries.

The American Broadcasting Company (ABC) televised the show in the US on September 13, 2005 with featured appearances by many American and Latino pp stars such as Destiny’s Child, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia Barrino, Shakira, Ricky Martin, Carlos Santana, Rob Thomas, Michelle Branch, Stevie Wonder, Kid Rock, Eminem, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, and Snoop Dogg.

Last year’s show also featured Patti LaBelle, Kid Rock, and Stevie Wonder performing songs dedicated to honoring the victims of Hurricane Katrina, which ravaged the city of New Orleans, Louisiana.

The national member associations of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) is the organization that provides the World music organization with the names of their overall best-selling artists and groups.

Each year, the WMS awards the best selling artist from each major country.

Legend Awards are given to artists “in recognition of their global success and outstanding contribution to the music industry”. Past winners include Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Modern Talking, Ace of Base, Diana Ross, Julio Iglesias, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, Lionel Richie, Ray Charles, Cher, Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, Whitney Houston, Prince, Janet Jackson, Carlos Santana and Rock Bond Scorpions.

The Chopard Diamond World Music Award is a new award, given to artists who have sold over 100 million albums over the course of their careers. Past winners are Rod Stewart, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and Bon Jovi.

Apart from the world’s best-selling artists in the various categories and the national best-selling artists, special millennium awards for the world’s best selling recording artist of all time were presented in 2000 to Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey in the male and female categories respectively.

To date, Mariah Carey has received 16 World Music Awards, the most WMAs for any recording artist, followed closely by Michael Jackson with 14 awards.

In today’s image over true talent music industry, it is not uncommon for many skillful artist to be left out when it comes to getting the recognition that may rightfully be deserved. In particular I am talking about the underground rap artists. It is a very known fact that some of the most lyrically talented emcee’s are underground rap artist, so if this is true, how come these artist aren’t in the spotlight more, not getting the big record deals or radio play. Shouldn’t a talented underground rapper get the same rewards if not more then the less talented so called main stream or commercial rap artist?

I know that when most people think of underground rap music they think of rough lyrics over sub par beats. They think that these artist are wannabe rap stars that are a few pegs down from the main stream rap star that you are probably used to seeing and hearing on a regular basis. The truth is that these assumptions couldn’t be further from the truth. There are plenty of underground rap artists that are out there producing high quality music with lyrical content covering a wide range of topics.

Many of these artists like and thrive off of the fact that they are not main stream. The reason that many feel this way because they feel more free as an artist. See, underground rap artists are known for being very independent in every aspect of their music careers. Most have absolute complete control over what kind of material they record an put out, while your average main stream artist has very limited control of what they can or can not record and put out. To many underground rappers having their creative freedom is much more important then the fancy videos and big contracts. Heck in many cases the underground rappers financially make actually make more money then the commercial artist, because the underground artist has less money going out then the big time artist.

I guess my thing is that as a true fan of underground rap music, I just wish that the artist that make it get more recognition because I believe that these are some of the most talented artist in the world. I am glad to see that more and more rap fans are listening to underground rap music, so I’m confident that the much deserved recognition is on it’s way.
