Warren G Pays Tribute To Nate Dogg With New Song

West Coast rapper Nate Dogg, born Nathaniel Hale, passed away in mid-March due to complications from multiple strokes and now his friend and collaborator Warren G plans to honor the late rapper in a new tribute track titled ‘This is Dedicated To You.’

Nate Dogg was famously featured on Warren G’s 1994 song ‘Regulate,’ which became his most popular single to date. On ‘This is Dedicated To You,’ Warren reminisces about the painful memories of seeing Nate Dogg in rehabilitation following his strokes, rhyming, “Life is such a trip, I know the world is full of madness/ Relearning how to walk and talk again, I can’t imagine.”

He also takes a jab at unnamed rappers who he feels have attempted to imitate Nate’s unique style, adding, “What the hell is going on? N—-s been biting songs/ Hell nah, that ain’t Nate Dogg!” So far, Warren G has issued no official premiere date for the track, which is intended for a digital release.

Following Nate Dogg’s death last month, Warren G revealed in an interview that the hit song ‘Regulate’ was actually recorded in a closet.

“I had an apartment on Long Beach Boulevard and San Antonio, and I didn’t have no furniture,” Warren G explained to DJ Skee. “I had dog s–t all over the floor, and I had two bedrooms. In one of my bedrooms, all I had was studio equipment. I did the sample, plugged in my VCR into the MPC60, sampled [the music], and after I finished it, I called Nate, and said ‘Nate, I got a record I think we should do, and go back-and-forth on it. I think it’d be dope.’ He came over, he heard it, and was like, ‘Damn!’ So from there, we hooked up a mic in the closet, and I called my engineer, Greg. He came over and recorded it, and there it is.”

Warren G released his most recent album, ‘The G-Files,’ in 2009, and has not announced plans to release a follow-up as yet. He paid tribute to Nate Dogg during this year’s SXSW Festival at the annual Respect the West party with Snoop Dogg.

Here’s what others are reporting around the web.

Last month, we saw Warren G break down in tears at Nate Dogg’s funeral. Nate Dogg, who died March 15, grew up with Warren G. Along with Snoop Dogg, they formed rap group 213 and became known as the architects of the West Coast rap sound. Warren G’s biggest hit, “Regulate,” had Nate Dogg on vocals. Today Warren G released a tribute song called “This is Dedicated to You” featuring Latoya Williams.
Check out the 30 minute snippet here; the lyrics start out saying, “All these albums we drop will never be the same without your voice on ‘em … Choked up, smoked out, riding to these melodies.”

Warren G told TMZ he actually recorded the track a few months before Nate died, because he battled serious health issues for years. He added, “It’s a song I’m just doing for my homeboy, letting people know how I feel.” All profits from “Dedicated” will go to a trust fund for Nate Dogg’s kids.

Finding Hip Hop Mix Podcasts

Underground Hip Hop Podcasts

2pac profile pictureFinding Hip Hop Mix Podcasts

Many music podcasts are available online for downloading; if one wanted to find, for instance, a hip hop mix podcast, there are a few sites available to help. The first possibility would be to go directly to a site which creates one and subscribe to it using a podcast client which automatically checks the feed for new episodes and downloads them for the user. If, however, one did not know of any hip hop mix podcast sites, or simply wanted to find new podcast sites, the best possibility would be to check a podcast directory, a list of podcasts that can be browsed.

Hip hop mix podcasts could easily be found at one of these podcast directories. A podcast directory stores lists of podcasts which have been submitted to the site, and categorizes them by genre, type of podcast, region, and other meta data. To find a hip hop mix podcast, visiting a podcast directory and checking under music podcasts, and then under hip hop music would find many podcasts which play that type of music.

The hip hop mix podcast could then be subscribed to by inputting the feed address listed into one of the many podcast clients. The music will come in episodes, the name for each downloadable portion of a podcast. Some of these podcasts may feature independent artists, musicians trying to break into the music industry who have chosen podcasting as a way of sharing their music and gaining a following. Others may be remixes of popular songs that have been changed in some way to give a different feel to the music. Often, the artists may already be established, though, and they still see podcasting as a way to introduce themselves to a larger audience. They may grant rights to pay certain hip hip songs to a podcaster, letting them play the music as part of their mix distribution while requesting a link to a site where more information can be learned about the artists and music can be purchased. Artists that have done this include alias, edan, outerspace, RA the rugged man, roots manuva, and outer space.

A large number of podcasts featuring hip hop mix podcasts are actually radio stations, however. These broadcasters have found that podcasting their shows and selections is an easy way to reach more listeners and gain a greater audience. These podcasters can reach more people easier and cheaper than they can by playing hip hop mix music over the airwaves in their local areas. Playing hip hop music over the internet is probably the way many future artists will do their work, and there are many ways available even now that they can do so and make a profit. For instance, some podcasts are designed to work on a payment basis. A hip hop artist who wished to share his music could charge for addition to the feed list, then issue a unique feed address to the user, allowing them to hear new pieces of hip hop music released. The hip hop music file could even be designed so it could not be copied and used by another user at a different computer, to ensure that the artist could

Explaining The Hip Hop And Rap Music Genre

Explaining The Hip Hop And Rap Music Genre

Hip hop music is part of hip hop culture, which began in the Bronx, in New York City in the 1970s, primarily among African Americans and Latin Americans, with considerable Jamaican influence. (two other elements are breakdancing and graffiti art).

The music may be based around either live or produced music, with a clearly defined drum beat (almost always in 4/4 time signature), presented either with or without vocal accompaniment.

Hip hop music was an outlet and a “voice” for disenfranchised youth as the culture reflected the social, economic and political realities of their lives. The music was popular there at least as far back as the late 1970s. The first Philadelphia hip hop record was “Rhythm Talk,” by Jocko Henderson in 1979, and the New York Times dubbed Philadelphia the “Graffiti Capital of the World” in 1971.

Rap is mostly influenced by hip hop. You can say that hip hop is synonymous with rap. As rap is all rhythm, very little melody, and virtually no harmony and is generally written by the younger generation for the younger generation — providing a universal voice for the young. In other words, hip hop music is a musical genre typically consisting of a rhythmic vocal style called rap which is accompanied with backing beats.

Underground Hip-Hop Music

Hip hop music is further a genre of music typically consisting of a rhythmic style of speaking called rap over backing beats performed on a turntable by a DJ. The Music has really gone a long way since the days of bboys spinning on cardboard boxes listening to what is now called underground rap.

The music emerged alongside breakdancing and graffiti, also popularized in the inner-city youth culture in New York City in the early 1970s as well. It is a unique, progressive style that attracts experimental artists with a deep love for diverse music styles, and many with strong poetic skills seek out background beats that compliment their performances and help contribute to the originality of their words.

Hip hop music was (and is) a venue for personal expression and creativity. Rap is the culture of African Americans, the continuation of their language and traditions.

Music journalist Peter Shapiro suggests that Kool G Rap “created the blueprint for Nas, Biggie and everyone who followed in their path.” Music isn’t about music, it’s everything we do day to day. Musically, rap songs usually have a strong rhythmic aspect with the spoken lyrics emulating the intense rhythm of the beat and exemplyfying daily African American life in the ghetto’s of America.

The Coup
Boots Riley and Pam The Funktress
Two of the best unkown hip hop artists in the world today, these two have carved out a slice of the pie in a niche that is riddled with top quality artists such as Talib Kweli, M-1, etc. The conscious/revolutionary hip hop genre is where The Coup is mainly focused, however many songs are reminiscent of Parliament Funk and Pick A Bigger Weapon really has a good variety of songs that feature that type of mixture. The latest album from The Coup, Pick A Bigger Weapon is in my opinion one of their best albums ever. Props to The Coup on this, one of our featured albums for the month of April.

Underground Hip Hop Beats

Nowadays hip hop is more than just drum beats, producers also use baselines and melodies in order to make beats. But it all started with the drums, for which hip hop music is known the most. Disc jockeys used to sample and isolate drums from music tracks, mostly from soul and funk music, to make their own, new sound. This was popular in the 80’s, when people gathered together on block parties and used to dance on these new drum beats. Later on, the Djs started to scratch, put instrument sounds and vocals on their beats. The result was a new music genre named hip hop.

The hip hop music went through a lot of changes, but the drums are still the heart of this genre. Even big producers still work with drum machines and MPCs, like Kanye West for example. And the result is very good! It’s really amazing how something that simple can become and stay so popular and move so many people all around the globe! Now, rap artists come from everywhere, Germany, Russia or Japan…

Apple iTunes

Some people say hip hop is dead, or is going to die out soon. But I don’t think this is true. It has become an integral part of the music industry and it will be that way. Every year new hip hop artists come on the scene, and they are as successful as the artists in every other genre. If you are fascinated about music, like me, and especially about hip hop, you want to be part of this movement!

Either you are a rapper, singer, producer or you want to do it all yourself, there’s no better time to start making your own music than now! If you are rapping or singing, you need to practice, so you have your own style, and that’s the most important part. Start with freestyling over different instrumental beats, and then, when you’re ready to make your own song, look for beat selling pages, let’s take „beats4tracks.com“ as an example, here you can listen to samples and buy the instrumentals for an accordingly low price. If you want to produce your own beats, you should look for a good and easy to use beat making software, DUBturbo or Fruity Loops for example. You might want to read my other articles on how to make your own beats.

Just try it out! Get yourself a free demo or software if you’re not sure about paying money for a product, there’s plenty good software out there. Feel the vibe and let it inspire you, it’s really fun!

A good choice, friend, as you now have the opportunity to spread your wings and create the music you’ve always wanted to create. On the other hand, let it be known now that by being an underground rapper, your chances at mainstream success slim quite a bit. Not because of your skill level, by any means, but because of your style.

Underground Hip Hop Audio

It is important, when dealing with music production, to take into serious consideration sound quality. Underground hip hop audio has always been fairly bad in times past. Now however with high quality recording equipment at somewhat reasonable prices small time recording studios are able to produce music that has incredibly good sound quality. While some underground hip hop artists still choose to use the cheapest quality recording equipment others have moved forward and are now using industry standard equipment and producing underground hip hop audio that is far better than in the past. The reason for using the better equipment and software is obvious, in fact the only reason people still use outdated or inferior equipment is because of cost. Synonymous with the underground hip hop culture is poverty. Most folks that get into rap/hip hop do so from the lower class. While there are plenty of rappers coming out of the suburbs claiming to be thugs, those rappers tend to lean toward the mainstream and thus there music would not be considered underground hip hop, but rather poser ass mainstream hip pop for the dumbed down masses.

Flobots – YouTube – MayDay, Rise, Handlebars

Check out the lyrics to Mayday below

Mayday Lyrics

MAYDAY!!!!
born in the flood
bloody fingerpaint sets
blackmarketed fresh
water canons forget me not
epitaph airbrush with death
white t’s
wife beaters
button up
reattach flesh

in between the lines
outside of the law
underneath the veil
we dig our foundations
we navigate the globe
trying to find a pattern to break the mold
with a family to feed
theres nowhere we wont go
but what if were caught
they say Im a snitch
shot at the check point
found with his throat slit
theres spray paint on the teleprompter
anchorman screams that hes seen a monster
mayday
theres bloodstains on his shirt
mayday
they say that hes gone berserk

sometimes
when I wanna shut out this world
wanna rip up this page
wanna pour out this heart
wanna get up on this stage
and my lips become percussion
and my fists become the rage
and I pound on this table
til it gives me something to say
then I think about things that Ive seen
right in front of me
that I dont wanna believe
gimme one of these mikes
lemme letem know
the way that it is is not how its gonna be
not if we dont letem get ahead of us
the present tensions no threat
its just a fence across the path
that were already ready to walk
rock solid footsteps
letem put up obstacles
and prove that it isnt possible
fuck that
we dont giveem any weight
true liberty and freedoms at stake
peace will never become pass
live my life until my last day

it was half-past eight in the bat cave
when the cracks in the plaster collapsed
and gave way to gaps in the pavement
mayday mayday
put it on blast
for the passengers and messengers
cause this is a disaster
where the fuck are the rescue workers
not far
off pissing on a cop car
in the hall with a poptart
sipping liquor in the rockbar
everyone climb to the frontline
lunchtimes cancelled
all hands on deck to pull survivors from the landfill
onlookers passers-by shake off that rubble
brush off your shoulders
break free from your standstill

signs of a better world
causes we understand
failures we expected to occur
and bring redemption for our sins
safety from the crowds
in the shadows on the run
we write our own cider house
rules to keep alive
rituals that prove their worth
search for systems we can trust
rhythms we can lock into

this is madness salvage teams
can’t bandage
hope when its damaged
or broken compassion
not enough rope in the van when
world is collapsing
our mode of action
broadcast through the glass
its all we can manage
donate with the plastic
scraps from the salad
hoping to balance
emotions invalidated
and staged on 4:3 aspects
just ballast for sadness
lives shattered are standard
fare for cameras and channels
stare no abracabras

no faster answers
or mantras for disasters
remastered and plastered
got it all backwards
do you know the faction your backing
its another man down
another mother gone
child drowned
another silenced song
solitude
another kind of strong
I miss you
another strung along
missing in action
another page is blackend burned
turned to ashes to ashes
dust off the flags and the caskets
we will never find another you
despite the life of love we knew
these lightning times are trouble who
cant count the strikes that punished through
the bonds we thought would never break
and never will and never fade and never change
but there is the rage
of losing you to their mistakes

in between the lines
signs of a the next movement
refuge from the crowd
outside of the law
causes we understand
hands that trace
instructions for descendants in the
shadows on the run
underneath the veil
failures we expected to
occur and bring redemption for our sins
in between the lines

Def Jam Rapstar DLC

Def Jam Rapstar DLCDef Jam Rapstar DLC

The developers of Def Jam Rapstar pledge heavy support for the upcoming rap game, pricing structure to fall “in-line” with other singing games.

4mm Games’ president Jamie King has told GamerZines that the developer intends to support its upcoming hip-hop rap game Def Jam Rapstar with post-release content “very heavily”, revealing that new DLC and song packs will be available for the game every week. This is good news for hip hop fans who will look forward to seeing some more of their favorite artists on the track lists of future DLC releases. I for one hope they break it up into as many sub-genres as possible making DLC Releases titled Underground Rapstar, Westcoast Rapstar, Eastcoast Rapstar, etc. King did not divulge any DLC titles but hinted at it.

“We’ll have DLC and we do absolutely want to have packs,” said King, “which will be centred around individual artists that have the body of work and ‘Back in the day’ or certain particular themes.”

He went on to say, “We would like to think that it is going to be successful, and we do intend to support it very heavily.” Also King made it clear that they aim to keep the fans in mind every step of the way.

“We have to be careful in terms of the expectations of the community. Whatever we start with, we have to expand upon week by week. I also want everyone to enjoy the 45 tracks on the disc before considering downloading more.”

“There’ll definitely be extra songs available for DLC on day one, and then every week we’ll be rolling more out.”

In a statement released by Def Jam Enterprises:

“…We’ve already cleared hundreds of tracks – so it is never going to be about us not having enough music. It’s about releasing the right music at the right time. If this game blows up it could do really well – and of course there is going to be further iterations on the game. We held back a lot of the stuff, things we couldn’t get perfect in time for the launch. That in itself lends itself to doing a sequel.” – Def Jam Enterprises’ James Waller

RA Scion – The Bio

RA Scion – The Bio

RA Scion, formerly of Common Market, is now going by the name Victor Shade. Check out this post for more information about Victor Shade and how bad ass he is.

Or stick around here to learn about the dude.

In 2002, RA Scion released his first album titled Apostrophe, The EP. Equipped with little more than a hand drum and a thrift-shop beat machine, he set out to make a name for himself within Seattle’s growing underground rap scene, making it clear to anyone who cared to listen that there was, in fact, a real message in his music.

His second album, Live & Learn, still lacked the overall production quality that was present in the music of his contemporaries like Boom Bap Project and D. Black. The album marked the origin of his working relationship with DJ/Producer Sabzi of the Blue Scholars, who contributed beats for the album’s stand-out tracks; two years later the duo would release one of The Town’s most significant musical contributions of 2005, Common Market.

As Common Market, RA Scion and Sabzi would go on to release 4 complete projects, most notably 2008’s full length Tobacco Road, quickly followed by a digital-only EP offering titled The Winter’s End. Critics and fans alike have speculated about the album’s prominent theme of death as a metaphor for the dissolution of Common Market, but rumors have never been substantiated by either band member.

victor shade ra scion

What is certain, however, is that RA Scion will continue to make music. Now under the pseudonym Victor Shade (alter ego of Marvel Comics’ West Coast Avenger, The Vision), RA appears more eager than ever to deliver his message to the listener. With producer MTK providing the perfect soundscape, RA delivers the graphic narrative, appearing as comfortable and as purposeful in a mask and cape as he did in bib overalls. While Victor Shade is sonically a half-genre removed from anything Common Market, the material remains message-driven; where Tobacco Road drew parallels between farm labor and community organizing, Victor Shade relies heavily on the analogy of artist as superhero, expounding upon the idea that “with great power comes great responsibility.”

Much is inferred here, even within the relatively obscure moniker – “victor,” a champion, one who has overcome; “shade,” a respite from the sun, the mythological god of which is Ra. It’s evident on multiple levels that the emcee is reinventing himself, but without blatant disregard for his foundation. There is an appreciable congruousness in Victor Shade, a continuation without contradiction, a hearkening back to RA’s early years. Suited up in the green and gold, the rapper is poised and confident, and with all the verve and vigor befitting of a caped crusader, he delivers his most impressive perfomance yet.
