portland-hip-hop-mtaABOUT MTA:

MTA is made up of 2 Lyrisists/Producers and 1 DJ/Producer: James Gwoove & Skin Grafik aka NUMB1ne and DJ RocSteady. Formally they were known as 10 Cent Depozit along with original members Slyder and Fritz (lives on the westcoast)…..still repping 10 Cent/Resa.P and Lake AFX James and Skin now carry the name MTA. MTA stands for many different things … MEGA Triflin Army, MEGA-Ton-AGE, Money and Times Alternative, Marching Through Armageddin, Masacre of Time and Art, Mental Telepathic Artisens, Medication Through Art …(Just to name a few). MTA is currently working on recording a new album “Masacre of Time and Art” that will be mostly produced by themselves and partner KevONE. They are also releasing a Mix CD that will include some exclusive tracks and REmastered REreleases.

James Gwoove was part of Traverse City original hip hop trio in the mid 90’s the Funky Ante’s, with Slyder and RocSteady, they were performing at the Loading Dock when it was still known as JRR’s wearhouse back in 93/94. Joining forces with Lake AFX in 1998 to to make two albums. A couple years later branching off to become 10 Cent Depozit with Kuzn Fritz and Slyder. They toured the midwest selling “5$ Limit” in 03 later losing Fritz to the westcoast but still creating “Revenge of the Nerds” in 06. Skin also released is first solo album in 06 and another in 07, later joining forces with BIC (who can be heard on “5$ Limit, “Revenge of the Nerds” and “NUMB”) creating Resa.P and released the nationaly distributed album “Food For Thought” in 08, they toured the west coast promoting this album. All albums were released under there own independent label MEGAcore Records, named after there friend who passed on Don MEGA.

MTA is a new form of hip hop with a unique sound that sets them apart from the rest of the hip hop scene. MTA has tapped into various nation wide markets, while keeping their home base Traverse City, Michigan. MTA has been carving out their unique style over the past 15 years. James has been rapping since the young age of 6 and Skin since around 14, they also have both been producing there own beats for the past 5 or so years better helping to create there own brand to this giant hip hop scene. MTA’s style varies with each song but still carries the significant sound they created that can be on either the heavier or on the lighter side of things. That sound is a witty combination of humor and seriousness with lyrics that touch on everything from rocking parties to politics to family.

MTA has performed at the 2003 Van’s Warped Tour and were invited back for the 2004 Vans Warped Tour where they performed at such major venues as: the Pontiac Sliverdome (Mi.), Riverbend Music Theatre (Oh.), Germaine Music Theatre (Oh.), Tweeter Center (Ill.) & Verizon Wireless Theatre (In.)- Also including these Michigan venues: Emerald Theatre, the Blind Pig, Orbit Room, the Temple Club, After Shock, Streeters, Shimmers, Saginaw Valley Auditorium, Loading Dock, Union Street Station & Weathly Street Theatre. Barracuda Portland Dance Party Coat Drive

From
What’s Happening PDX

DJ LayLow and Ozone are giving back again. The promoters/hosts known for their heart of gold have collaborated to form the “Bring a Child Out of the Cold, Dance Party”, a charity Hip Hop show which will take place Thursday Jan. 21st, 2010 at Barracuda, located at Second Avenue and Northwest Couch Street.

Doors open at 10 p.m. and admission is free for all attendees 21 and up, and only $10 for those between 18 to 20 years of age. There will be live performances by Portland native hip hop groups Bad Habitat, Lady Matriarx, Tru Game, and DJ Mentos along with drawings for prizes.

Ozone has raised thousands of clothes, canned foods, toys, and dollars for multiple charity organizations in past successful Hip Hop fundraisers while DJ LayLow coordinates concerts that regularly result in over a thousand in capacity, so this bound to be a spectacular event for the greater Portland area. To make the “Bring a Child Out of the Cold, Dance Party” a beneficial showcase, they ask for a donation of a coat or a toy for a boy or girl, which will be generously given to Northwest Impact for proper distribution to Portland’s youth.

Support local hip hop, especially when local hip hop is supporting the youth of our community and donate a coat, toy, and lend an ear to the “Bring a Child Out of the Cold, Dance Party” and Northwest Impact this Thursday at Barracuda. As said by DJ LayLow “Those of us in the hip-hop community have benefited from what we do and would like to give back to our community and show a positive side of hip-hop that most don’t see, the kids are our future and if we don’t look out for them who will?”

Underground Portland hip-hop emcee’s Dru Manchu and Mindskillz are Surreal Music. Flawless and Lady of Bad Habitat and Matriarx are also major members of Surreal Music. Portland Hip Hip wouldn’t be the same without these four artists. Former portland dj, DJ Cuttah is no longer a part of Surreal Music after mysteriously disappearing following a disappointing show for him. Assumed dead or mentaly incompetent DJ Cuttah will be missed. The Portland hip hop scene will most definitely miss him as well. Are you looking for the best new hip hop songs? Whether it’s mainstream, underground rap, old school, gangsta or the Dirty South, here’s where you’ll find the hottest new hip hop songs to listen to, or download to your computer.

Hip Hop Radio Stations

Admittedly, the Internet has taken a bite out of local radio stations credibility, yet they still remain important when you want the hot new music. Here’s a list of hip-hop and R&B stations as well is a few Internet radio alternatives…

Power106.  Anyone who’s listener this radio station knows it is the source for new rap songs. The Power features well known mainstream artists like Kanye West, The Game and 50 Cent.

Hot 97. They claim to be hip hop, nobody’s gonna argue with that claim. Check out their nationally syndicated programs; you won’t be disappointed.

Power 105. Though it used to play soft rock, Power 105 made the move to hip hop and R&B, including old school golden tracks and freestyles from up and coming underground rappers.

IMEEM.   With IMEEM, You can essentially create your own mix tape in a matter of minutes. Listeners can search the huge database of music, save their playlists, and share those playlists with others on the websites social networking platform.

Pandora. I used to adore all the time searching for new hip hop songs. Simply visit their website and enter in the name of your favorite hip-hop group; Pandora will serve up your own personal radio station filled with similar artists based on lyrical and musical styles. You can vote each track up or down, and Pandora will increase or decrease the frequency of that song in your playlist according. If I’m anywhere near my laptop, there’s a good chance Pandora is playing the background.

MixTapes

If you’re looking for new hip hop songs that are spotted a different way, be sure to check out the following websites and their mix tapes…

DatPiff.   And your limitless supply of mix tapes, most of which are very high quality. Definitely a resource for anyone interested in picking up the hottest new mix tapes.

ThatCrack. While their selection may be smaller than DatPiff, they don’t slack on quality: these are some of the highest mix tapes I’ve ever heard.

I’ll use these radio stations and websites to track down the rap songs from a wide variety of genres. It’s a great way to expose yourself to new artists for free!
