About Boots Riley

Boots Riley was born in 1971 into a family of radical organizers in Chicago. The family later moved to Detroit and then to Oakland. His interest in politics began at a young age, inspiring him to join the Progressive Labor Party and the International Committee Against Racism.

In 1991 Riley founded the political hip hop group The Coup with fellow United Parcel Service worker E-roc. Pam the Funkstress, DJ for the group, joined in 1992. Boots was chief lyric writer and produced the music on the albums. They released a song on a 1991 compilation album called Dope Like A Pound Or A Key along with fellow former UPS worker Spice-1 and future Thug Life member Mopreme Shakur, then known as Mocedes. The album was released on Wax That Azz Records, which was owned by Pierre “The Beat Fixer” James, Too Short’s DJ.

In 1991, he and other Hip-Hop artists created the Mau Mau Rhythm Collective. They put on “Hip-Hop Edutainment Concerts” which allied with and promoted the campaigns of community based organizations like Women’s Economic Agenda Project (WEAP), Copwatch, International Campaign To Free Geronimo Pratt, and the Black Panther Alumni Association. The Mau Mau Rhythm Collective was actively involved in the campaign to stop the FBI’s “Weed And Seed” program (which was used in the ’60s in conjunction with CoIntelPro) from coming to Oakland. They used the growing popularity of their concerts to bring a large number of youth to take over a closed Oakland city council meeting and hold a public meeting.

In 1992, The Coup signed to Wild Pitch Records/EMI. The group released their debut album Kill My Landlord in 1993. Two singles from that album, “Dig It” and “Not Yet Free”, received play on BET, Yo! MTV Raps, and mix shows on national Black radio.

Featuring performances by one of the most conscious minded up-and-coming hip-hop groups, Speaker Minds. Lead by member, Diezel P, the group has made a name for themselves in the underground hip-hop scene. The Freaks & Beats Halloween Hip-Hop Show will be a dual mix-tape release show for Speaker Minds and Bad Habitat, whose album, Scissor Tree has been delayed and for sake of the fans have decided to release a teaser mixtape called “The Waiting Room EP”. The Waiting Room EP features all new music that has never been released and will not be on the Scissor Tree album. October has been a great month for Hip-Hop in the Northwest Hip-Hop scene. Oregonians have had the pleasure of seeing 3 Bad Habitat shows and the city of Portland will be treated to the best Halloween Concert at Mt Tabor Theater featuring performances by Diezel-P and Speaker Minds as well as Bad Habitat and others. The Portland Halloween Hip-Hop Show, Freaks & Beats, is a costume party and Halloween Hip-Hop free for all. Mt Tabor Theater is located in Southeast Portland and has been the venue of choice for many of Portland, Oregon’s most well known hip hop artists.

They claim to be The Official Home of Underground Hip Hop, Rap & Streetwear. The claim is founded in truth and ego. They feature a lot of really good hip-hop artists from the underground and update the site daily. UGHH is an online store selling Streetwear Fashion, Urban Clothing, Gear, T-Shirts, CDs, Vinyl Records, DVDs, Graffiti Supplies, Art, Toys, Magazines, Books, DJ Accessories, Equipment Bags, Audio, Videos, Singles, Albums, Radio Shows, Old School, and Instrumentals. Their forum is used by hundreds of thousands of people. Fans, Artists and Promoters alike use the site and the forum on the regular. It is by far the most prominent Underground Hip-Hop themed website online. If you haven’t heard, now ya know. I personally (Mindskillz) have found a lot of new underground hip-hop music on this site.

2. Access Hip Hop

One of the best places online to find Underground Hip-Hop music. They feature a forum as well but it is not used nearly as much as some of the other Underground Hip-Hop forums.

Access Hip Hop is an online store and a physical storefront in San Diego, California. We stock vinyl, CDs and DVDs (mostly hip hop) by independent and underground artists, plus classics and current favorites. We also have t-shirts, hoodies and posters, books and magazines. Access has built a reputation for a thorough and up-to-date selection plus friendly, knowledgeable and reliable customer service.
The Access Hip Hop web site has been serving the worldwide hip hop community since summer 2002. Customers count on Access to fulfill their orders quickly and completely. Our online forums connect up the hip hop community in San Diego and globally.

3. Indie Hip-Hop

The site is basically a blog but they stay really up-to-date and feature some really fresh new underground hip-hop artists that no one else is featuring. The Blog Creator, Steve “Funkworm” Butler and his team of contributors present a great platform for underground artists.

Indiehiphop.net is a blog created by producer/artist Steve “Funkworm” Butler that focuses on delivering news and information related to the business of independent hip hop culture.

4. HipHopDX

Another awesome site for finding new underground hip-hop artists and buying CD’s and gear. Not as prominent as some of the other sites. And not as underground as some of the other sites. HipHopDX features mainstream garbage and barely made this list if it weren’t for its underground hip hop section. Last time I visited their site it was chocked full of advertisements for video games. I almost didn’t include this sellout of a site on my list but because they are such big hitters in the game I felt that I couldn’t leave them out or else people would complain.

5. Underground Hip-Hop Net

An old site that is out of date on some levels and not completely up to speed with the current state of underground hip-hop. But it is one of the largest databases of underground rap music online and features one of the largest collections of street art and graffiti anywhere online. An oldy but a goody this one.

Honorable Mention

1. World Star Hip Hop: You all know it, mostly crappy wanna be mainstream artists and hood rats shaking their asses. Every once in a while you will find a good underground rap song.
2. thaoriginalhiphop.blogspot.com: An old blogspot site that actually does a really good job of staying up to date and relevant.
3. All Hip Hop: Mostly mainstream, covers a little bit of underground.
4. Hip Hop Site: Full of ads, loads slowly, mostly mainstream. However like the others, it does feature some fresh underground from time to time.
5. Rap Basement: A cool hip-hop culture website with more to offer than videos and music. A huge forum on culture rather than just music. Not a bad website at all.
6. Best of the Honorable Mention list http://www.worldofundergroundhiphop.com/ is an awesome blog that is one of the freshest up and coming indie rap music websites out there. Big ups!

When starting out as an Underground Hip Hop artist it is important to remember the core elements of a brand image:

1. Brand Purpose: What is the purpose? Are you a revolutionary emcee fighting for change? Are you a party rapper wanting every body to have a good time and cut loose? What is your purpose as a hip hop artist? Keep your purpose consistent. It will help people remember WHAT you are, and that is just as important as WHO you are in a market that is saturated with artists.
2. Brand Appeal: What is appealing about you? What makes you stand out? is it a look? a sound? an attitude? Remember to keep your brand appeal consistent. It is okay to switch it up now and again. But you don’t want a different look, a different sound or a different attitude on every other song, in every other picture, etc. This will help people to remember WHO you are.
3. Brand Focus: Who is your audience. What do they want to hear and see? Are you trying to appeal to a younger or older fan base? Are you trying to appeal to women or men? It is possible to have a wide focus but you need to always remember your audience. If you are a male and physically attractive and want to market toward women you will want to have marketing materials that feature your face and body. If you are not good looking you might want to steer clear of marketing towards women and focus on marketing your sound or persona via graffiti font in your logo or other methods to appeal to other groups. Younger audiences are more susceptible to bright colors than older audiences. Your brand focus is the FAN BASE.

With these three things in your mind at all times you can now start to formulate a brand strategy for yourself. Each and every brand strategy is different. There are Branding Firms that will help you in this process. They typically do a very good job but can cost anywhere from $500 to $15000 for this type of service. You will need to create pieces of marketing materials to ensure your brand is well known. Online you will need a Website, Social Networking Profiles (Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, etc), Digital Music Distribution (iTunes, Amazon MP3, CD Baby, etc). In print you will need a Flyer or Business Card including your website and contact information, a Press Packet including a print ready photo, brief bio, complete bio, information about your performance history, details about the specifics of your performance and a CD. For presentation purposes it is best to put it all in a nice folder, preferably one that has your logo or image printed on it with a glossy finish.

Below is a checklist that you will want to go through and work on until the following items are polished as best they can. You will never be finished with your marketing campaign. It will always be evolving and you will never stop honing it into something better.

Online Marketing Materials

Website: You want to remember the core elements in your Brand Image when designing your website. It is highly recommended that you pay a professional website designer to build your website. Travis Royce is a Hip-Hop/EDM DJ from Portland, Oregon. He is a pretty dope Underground Hip-Hop Artist.

Below is an excerpt from the review that Oregon Live did of this artist.

Travis Royce, a 22-year-old Northwest Portland singer, songwriter and music producer, is set to perform his first live concert later this month.

Royce will perform his electronic, hip-hop style of music at the concert, 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at the Hawthorne Theatre, 1507 S.E. 39th Ave. The event is for all ages; tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Tickets can be purchased on the Afton Shows website.

Royce began making music at the age of 12, but didn’t begin releasing his music publicly until this year because of anxiety and his fear of performing, he said in an interview with The Oregonian earlier this year.

He recently signed a management agreement with Michael “Goldie” Greaux, a 27-year veteran at Def Jam Universal and owner of Goldie Mack Artist Management NYC. Royce plans to release his first album at the end of the summer.

Camp Lo is an American hip hop duo, formed in 1995, which hails from The Bronx, New York. The duo consists of rappers Sonny Cheeba (Salahadeen Wilds) and Geechi Suede (Saladine Wallace), both of Muslim upbringing.

They named themselves ‘Camp Lo’ to separate themselves from Atlanta-based rapper Cee-Lo of Goodie Mob. Initially signed with Profile Records, Camp Lo made their first appearance in 1996 on The Great White Hype soundtrack, with their single, “Coolie High”. The smooth party song was a minor hit, peaking at #25 on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart. Their first major exposure came with the release of their second single, the upbeat, horn driven “Luchini”, otherwise known as “This Is It”.
