One Movement, Eastern Sunz, and LOW are just a few of the hip hop artists in Ashland, Oregon.

About Ashland

Ashland is a city in Jackson County, Oregon, near Interstate 5 and the California border in the south end of the Rogue Valley. It was named after Ashland County, Ohio and Ashland, Kentucky which were the origin of many of Ashland’s founders including Abel Helman. It officially became a town with the name Ashland Mills in 1855. There are about 20,000 permanent residences in Ashland, Oregon. It is the home of Southern Oregon University and the internationally renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival. With almost 14% of families living below the poverty line it is one of Oregon’s poorest towns. This only feeds the fury of the emcees and other hip hop artists coming out of Ashland. Poverty tends to breed determination and this is evident in the thriving hip hop community in Ashland. Arts and Culture are strong in Ashland as well as thriving parks, museums, festivals and more. Mt. Tabor Theater
4811 SE Hawthorne Blvd.
Portland, Oregon

Ahhhhh Yeah….. Its that time of year again where Grown Women have an excuse to wear Lingerie out in Public and call it a Costume and the Men can hide their peeping eyes with a Jason mask. Well, Speaker Minds and Mt.Tabor Theater (4811 SE Hawthorne Blvd) are providing you a place to admire people’s creativity while partying to some the NW best live Hip Hop.
Doors open at 9pm and the show begins at 10pm, so don’t be late! 21 and Up, $5 cover, and Costumes are not required but are encouraged…. matter of fact, we’re handing out FREE Autographer Speaker Minds’ T-Shirts to the first 25 people to show up in elaborate costumes (don’t come through with a Paper Plate Mask and a Towel for a Cape expecting a Free shirt).
Performances by:

Speaker Minds (www.speakerminds.com):
Your favorite 6 piece Hip Hop fusion band spawned from inner city Portland with the reputation for making asses shake with an uplifting and educational message, will be holding down the night! After months of re-mixing and mastering our debut EP, We will use the special occasion to Re-Releasing our EP “9 To 5: Self Employed” which will be available for download this week! Also, stay tuned for the premiere of our official music video “Banger (Hands High)” !

Bad Habitat (www.badhabitatmusic.com):
Bad Habitat is the hip-hop equivalent of The Three Musketeers, with the swagger of a young Rat Pack, and a style all their own. Forming early in the summer of 2008, Dru Manchu, Flawless, and Damian Grey have since stolen hundreds of shows and amassed a loyal fan base. They will be releasing their first official project “The Waiting Room” EP, which will be available as a FREE download at www.badhabitatmusic.com

Task1ne (Task1ne.bandcamp.com):
This lyrical assassin hails from Sacramento, CA and when he isn’t representing the 916 with clever word play, he’s rummaging through comic books to get his super hero fix, as shown in his latest music video to “Whats That Sound” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SF1wm-qwX20). He recently released his 3rd project titled “District 916″ and its available at Task1ne.bandcamp.com!

DJ Wels (www.twitter.com/djwels):
Yeah! It’s that time again! This week is no less fresher, with the ultimate “Style Molester” DJ Wels in the house tonight! DJ Wels has been grindin on the DJ scene for years, cutting baby crabs with DJ Wicked back in the day. Today he kicks it around as a stand in DJ with Animal Farm. He also provides nasty mixes for local radio shows and murders the blocks of downtown Portland doing this and that. Follow this man on twitter!

This is going to be an amazing night with great live music from some of the Northwest’s elite talent! And remember we’re handing out FREE Autographer Speaker Minds’ T-Shirts to the first 25 people to show up in elaborate costumes. We look forward to seeing you FREAKS getting busy on the dance floor.

Okwerdz and Illmaculate

okwerdz portland oregonThe Home Grown Tour featuring Okwerdz and Grayspace popped off last night in Oregon City, OR. It was a dope show with more than a few surprises. First and foremost was the unexpected appearance of battle rap super star Illmaculate. He jumped up on stage for a large part of Okwerdz set and did some dope freestyles over the live band performance of Greyspace. We’ll cover that more later but first, the second big surprise.

T-Webb and Winkz

T-Webb and Winkz are two young up and coming Hip-Hop/R&B artists straight outta Estacada, OR. T-Webb and Winkz had a dope performance and brought out a huge crowd. I would have liked to see more of their fans sticking around and filling up the dance floor, but it is what it is. Props to T-Webb and Winkz, look to see them smashing it on a lot more shows in the future.

greyspace

Greyspace

What is better than a dope live band with an ill emcee and a phenomenal guitar player who happens to also be a doctor? Not a whole lot in this cruel world, but Greyspace has that and more. Their performance was awesome, switching up their style on more than a few tracks to accommodate every musical preference in the building. Their Myspace categorization of Hip-Hop/Funk/Indie is a good indicator of their style and sound. Mad props to Greyspace, they killed it last night.

Okwerdz and Illmaculate

Okwerdz opened up his set with a song featuring Greyspace and then did a couple tracks with DJ Cuttah as accompaniment. All of those early tracks were sick but couldn’t really compare to what came next. Unannounced to anyone, Illmaculate was set to perform with Okwerdz. So Ok called him up mid set and spit some verses with Ill. They got the Greyspace band behind them and busted some sick 4 bar freestyles. It was a stellar performance. Props to Okwerdz for coming out and killing it less than 24 hours after doing a show in Reno, Nevada. Good luck to the rest of the Home Grown Tour, keep it crackin’. Big ups to Portland rap battle legend Illmaculate for coming out and showing the real heads some love.
okwerdz portland

More Shout Outs

Props to ourselves for killing it. Dru, Flawless, Damian Grey and DJ Cuttah (Bad Habitat) rocked the show with one of the dopest performances of the night. Props to Sawb 1 for collaborating with us on the planning and coordinating of the event. Big ups to all the fans and real hip hop heads that came out to Oregon City on a Saturday Night.

This show is going to be crazy. I have been working on using Facebook ads to promote the show. And while it has been somewhat expensive I believe that I am able to reach more people who would like to go to the show than with more traditional methods like putting flyers on cars or putting up posters around town.

Check out all the different versions of the flyer I did recently.

Okwerdz

Okwerdz is a fresh coast battle emcee who has been grinding hard on the rap battle scene for a long time now. Okwerdz is regarded as one of the top 10 battle emcees in the world. Okwerdz has been killin emcees in the Grind Time Now rap battle league since it started back in the day. His most notorious battles have been vs T-Rex and Hollow Da Don, two of the dopest battle emcees in Grind Time Now league. The Okwerdz vs T-Rex battle can be seen in a previous post on Bad Habitat Music. Also the Okwerdz vs Hollow Da Don battle has been previously posted on our site.

Thanks for visiting the website, show some love and hook it up with a social bookmark below. If you haven’t checked out Global Grind hit the green button below and sign up. Its a dope hip hop news website. I hope y’all come out to the Okwerdz show in Oregon City, Oregon on July 31st. Its gonna be a sick show. Peace

Virtu “Shoe In” Release Show

Portland Hip Hop artist Virtu “Shoe In” Album Release concert featuring performances by Bad Habitat, Dirty Birdy, Tru Game, Northorn Lights, Maddhadda, and Starchile. The show was crazy ill with a rare performance from Maddhadda and guest appearance from Dirty Birdy. Everyone’s performances were dope fuck. Mt Tabor Theater is a real tight place to have hip hop shows in Portland. The sound system was great and the layout of the space makes for a really good sound. The “green hall” wasn’t much of a green room but the backstage layout did have some plus sides.
