Grind Time Now / 9Five Eyewear Presents: Rugged vs Rone

Grind Time Now and 9Five Eyewear Present

Rugged vs Rone

Battle from GTEC March Madness event. Rugged messed up real bad in the first round but bounced back. Rone murdered Rugged hands down. A dope battle, but it was mostly one sided.

Grind Time Now Presents

Godzilla vs Syahboy

(GT Georgia Tryout Battle)
Another tryout battle which took place as a promo at the Asian Hip Hop Summit in Atlanta, GA. Former Freestyle Friday Champ Syahboy takes on GT newcomer Godzilla. Don’t miss this one!

Grind Time Georgia

Godzilla vs Diligent

Battle from GTGA’s “Armageddon”. Diligent and Godzilla both had dope lines with fresh punches. It was really close but in the end it had to go to Godzilla. He just had more punchlines and more swagger. Done in three rounds, another dope battle from Grind Time Georgia.

Blazers Game Time

Blazers Game Time

Portland Trailblazers Fans Smash Phoenix Suns Van in this hilarious fan video. Lookout Suns if the Blazers are anything like their fans your in for a world of hurt. The video, titled “Blazers Game Time” is produced by Portland Video Production company Global Market Productions. The Blazers Game Time for Game 6 of the First Round vs the Phoenix Suns is 7:30PM on Thursday 10/29/2010. The Blazers Game Time video may or may not be played at the game tonight on the jumbo-tron.

Blazers 6th Man Team

I hope the Blazers Game Time video from Blazers 6th Man Team helps them get the win tonight. Lets hope the officiating staff does a better job in this game. They have been horrible all series on both sides of the court. Particularly that foul on Steve Nash from Marcus Camby in which Camby was on the other side of the floor when the foul was called and hadn’t touched Nash that time down the court. Some are calling it the worst foul ever called in the NBA. I would have to agree with them. Maybe the Blazers Game Time video is a little retaliation for that bad call… Who knows. One thing is for sure, The Blazers are gonna put up a fight tonight in the Rose Garden. Go Blazers! Thanks to the guys who made the Blazers Game Time Video, good work everyone. I hope the Blazers smash the Suns like you guys smashed that van.

Blazers Game Time
Presented by Blazers Game Time and Blazers 6th Man Team. Blazers Game Time video was filmed by Global Market Productions in association Far Far Away Productions. Go Blazers Game Time!

World Star Hip Hop World Premiere Videos

Lupe Fiasco – I’m Beaming

Another dope cut from Lupe Fiasco. The alternative hip hop sensation has been doing a lot lately. This one will for sure bring him a lot of recognition not only for the quality of the song but because its featured on the world famous World Star Hip Hop. Props to Lupe Fiasco for staying real even when he makes it big.

E-40 – Undastandz Me

I’m digging this new one from E-40. It aint like the old days of the bay area funk but its ill. The beat is raw and poppy and E-40 does his thing. I like the video itself aside from the song. Good production, dope track, props to 40 and World Star Hip Hop.

Bizarre (Feat. Tech N9ne & Nate Walka) – Believer

I have never heard Bizarre until now, and this track surprised me. I don’t always like what I see on WSHH but this one is really dope. Tech N9ne brought the hotness on this cold track. Deep lyrics from all of the cats on this track. Props to World Star Hip Hop for featuring this video in their Premiere Videos.

Grind Time Battles

Grind Time Georgia

DeatroDollar vs Supreme Court

Grind Time Battle from GTGA’s “Argageddon.” DeastroDollar is fresh out of the tryouts and going for his first win again the undefeated Supreme Court. Grind Time Georgia in effect. These two battle rappers are both ill. The overtime was real good and Supreme Court deserved to win it. Props to both emcee. Grind Time Battles on Bad Habitat Music yo. Word

Grind Time Florida

Kid Caustic vs 24/7

These are two great emcees that have came a long way. Both are 4-0 and are battling to see who the first emcee in GT to go 5-0 will be. Three 90 Second rounds with no overtime! This is an epic battle that will go down in the gt history books! Grind Time Florida in the house. Grind Time Battles like these are ill.

Grind Time Midwest

Street Profit vs Steve Staples

Two emcees from the Chicago Battlegrounds DVD, Street Profit and Steve Staples, face off in the Windy City Takeover 3 hosted by Sonny Bamboo. Both emcees were dope but Steve Staples hit Street Profit with much better punchlines. Props to Street Profit for winning over the judges for the win. I thought it should have gone the other way. Not all Grind Time Battles go the way you want them to though.

Also check out the new website by Surreal Music and Bad Habitat Member, Mindskillz aka Samuel Miller Art.

Grind Time Now Presents: Sonny Bamboo & Real Deal vs Yung ZM & Rone

Grind Time Midwest

Sonny Bamboo & Real Dealvs Yung ZM & Rone

Sonny Bamboo & Real Deal (Grind Time Midwest aka GTMW) face Yung ZM & Rone (Grind Time East Coast aka GTEC) in a main event 2-on-2 battle from I STILL GET IT IN OHIO hosted by Zero Star. A dope battle featuring one of Grind Times biggest stars Sonny Bamboo. Yung ZM hit Sonny Bamboo and Real Deal hard. I gotta give it up for Yung ZM and Rone.

Grind Time Florida

Maniphest Destne vs T2 Good

Battle from GTN’s “Broward Beatdown 2″ featuring Maniphest Destne verses T2 Good. Maniphest Destne had a few good lines in the first round but T2 Good had more clever punchlines and a lot more swagger. Second round went to Maniphest Destne for sure though. And he killed it in the last round too. This is the first ever rematch in Grind Time history and its good to see Maniphest Destne win in the rematch.

Grind Time West Coast

Fox vs QuDawg

The Jungle’s Fox takes on QuDawg in this GTWC mc battle. Fox is a dope rapper but he didn’t hit QuDawg with any punchlines. QuDawg had punchlines and better variations to his flow and delivery. Both the dudes fucked up a lot. Especially QuDawg at the end of round 2, he fell off before the round was over. The problem with gangsta rappers in battles is there is too much huffing and puffing and not enough rapping. I would have to give it QuDawg though. Word

Grind Time Now Presents: Rap Battles

Grind Time Now/9Five Eyewear Presents

Z.M. vs Drect

Co-founder and CEO of Grind Time Now, Drect steps into the ring against Z.M. one of the top battlers in the Grind Time East Coast division. This is a promo battle with 3 non-timed rounds. Drect serves up a couple dope ass battle verses for Z.M. This is an ill rap battle from the co-founder of the largest rap battle league in the world.

Grind Time Now/9Five Eyewear Presents

Vicci vs Screem

Two newcomers go at it in a dope battle from March Madness. Grind Time’s March Madness is probably one of the biggest rap battle spectacles the world has ever seen. Vicci and Screem do their thing and put on a good show. This is a pretty decent rap battle.

Grind Time Now Presents

Elfamail vs Tut

Elfamail (Chicago, IL) faces Tut (Cleveland, OH) in a promo battle at I STILL GET IT IN OHIO hosted by Zero Star. Another dope rap battle from Grind Time Midwest. Elfamail and Tut both rocked this battle with passion. I like Tut for the winner but Elfamail had some amunition in this rap battle for sure. Props to both emcees.

Grind Time Now Presents: Emcee Battles

Grind Time Now Presents

Young P-ro vs Scotty P

Promo battle from Gring Time South’s “Broward Beatdown.” Grind Time South is a tough division, Young P-ro and Scotty P are definitely good competitors. Both emcees could have won this one. Another dope emcee battle from Grind Time South. Check back frequently for more battles from Broward Beatdown and other Grind Time South emcee battles.

Grind Time Now Presents

Automatic vs T Money Bagz

Battle from Grind Time East Coast Wreck The Halls event featuring Automatics vs T Money Bagz. These cats are both dope freestyle emcees. I thought it was a toss up. Wreck The Halls was a dope event. Stay tuned to Bad Habitat Music for more battles from Grind Time East Coast’s Wreck The Halls event.

Grind Time Now/9Five Eyewear Presents

Deacon Frost vs Swave Sevah

One of the main events from Grind Time Now’s “March Madness” at South Paw in Brooklyn, NY. Swave Sevah takes on Deacon Frost who is making his first appearance in Grind Time Now. Dope battle! Hosted by Drect, Babs & Lady Luck. For his first appearance in the Grind Time Now league Deacon Frost held his own.

Grind Time Now Presents MC Battle Raps

Grind Time Now / 9Five Eyewear Presents

Big Kannon vs Troy Brown

Battle from GTNY’s “March Madness”. Troy Brown seemed nervous or something. His flows were almost too fast at some points, you couldn’t catch his punchlines. Big Kannon didn’t have as many punchlines though. Unlike other Grind Time Battles this one was judged by the fans. You gotta log onto the website to see who won.

Grind Time Now Presents

G Souldier vs Mike Flamez

G Souldier (St. Louis, MO) faces Mike Flamez (Toledo, OH) in the Windy City Takeover 3 hosted by Sonny Bamboo. G Souldier didn’t quite cut it for me. I felt like Mike Flamez hit him with more punchlines.

Grind Time Now Presents

Dirty Dem vs Hemisphere

FL battle vet Dirty Dem takes on Hemisphere, who has taken a little break from battling, but plans to come back with a vengeance. This is a 3-round promo battle. Hemisphere hit Dirty Dem with way more punchlines, and for the most part they were more clever… until round two. Dirty Dem won it for me in round two with better delivery and some of the best lines of the battle. and Hemisphere just kept using fat lines which get pretty old after three rounds.

Grind Time Now Presents

Hollow Da Don vs Okwerdz

Hollow Da Don is a dope battle emcee. I would dare to say that he is one of the top 5 emcees in the Grind Time Rap Battle league. Sometimes it sounds like he is screaming like a girl but the lyrics make up for it. The lines about the wedding and the flower girl are vicious. Okwerdz handled him pretty well though. I liked Okwerdz in this battle. I would have given it to him if it werent for Hollow Da Don’s line about “wrestling with two left knees… can’t suplex me”. That being said Grind Time Now needs a little more Okwerdz Battles in my opinion. For that matter Grind Time Now needs more Hollow Da Don Battles too.

Grind Time Now Presents

NoCanDo vs DirtBag Dan

Main Event Battle from GTWC BOLA3 event on New Years Eve. West Coast veteran Nocando returns to the battle scene to take on 7-1 Dirtbag Dan. DirtBag Dan is sick but damn NoCanDo has a million rhymes and a huge vocabulary. Its hard to call it, DirtBag Dan had better punchlines but NoCanDo blew me away with his rhyme schemes and he definitely had some good punchlines too.

Grind Time Now Presents

Complex vs Prince Eazy

Complex (Coney Island, NY) faces Prince Eazy (Chicago, IL) in a main event promo battle at I STILL GET IT IN OHIO hosted by Sonny Bamboo and Big Kannon. Complex doesn’t got the fan club and cheer leaders that Prince Eazy does, and he aint nearly as annoying. Eazy has some good lines but Complex beat him.

SIXSHOT Hip Hop News Blog

SixShot Hip Hop Magazine

SIXSHOT

SIXSHOT is an Electric HipHop Magazine and News Blog. They report daily with hip hop news from all over the spectrum from b-boy break dance videos to graffiti art, underground hip hop to mainstream news and gossip. The website looks really sick with a metal grunge background and an urban logo (as seen below) with an SS symbol that looks a lot like II Roman Numerals. Some of the most popular news topics on SIXSHOT are Lil Wayne, Eminem, Kanye West, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris and Bow Wow. It comes at no surprise that these are the most popular trending topics on the site. It is mostly a mainstream hip hop news and gossip site.

SixShot Hip Hop Magazine

SIXSHOT Magazine

The SIXSHOT Magazine section of the website is broken up into a few different sections which makes it really easy to navigate. The different categories are Hip-Hop News, Interviews, Blogs & Columns, Album Reviews, Artists A-Z, Rap Lyrics, Event Dates, About Sixshot, Network, Sixshot Shop and Upcoming Albums. That alone makes for a huge website that is full of good content that is undeniably valuable. But wait there’s more. There is also a community section…

SixShot Hip Hop Magazine

SIXSHOT Community

The Sixshot Community is broken up into eight categories, again to make it really easy to navigate. The Community categories are: Latest Topics, Crews, Images, Top 10, Search Forum Posts, Find Members, Invite Someone, Forum Help. So as you can see they have a forum and they allow members to create crews, they rank the top ten forum posters, profile views and a lot more. This brings a social media aspect to the website that I really like. Sixshot also allows for people to post images and vote on images which are ranked also. If all that wasn’t enough Sixshot also has a Multimedia Section…

SixShot Hip Hop MagazineSIXSHOT Multimedia

Sixshot Multimedia Section is my favorite part of the website. There are Audio Streams to listen to, Video Streams to watch, Artist Photos and Member Freestyles where forum members can post audio clips of their own “freestyles”. Speaking of freestyles, Sixshot also has a MC Battles section which allows emcees to upload audio clips of their battle verses and the community votes on who wins.

Best Underground Rap Artists

Best Underground Rappers

The Following list is featured in the video above. By no means is this an official list of the best underground rappers. And it is not a Best Underground Rappers of All Time list. Some of the cats in the list are less known but most definitely deserve to be on this list of top underground hip hop artists. Some artists have multiple songs on this list also. I hope you find some new underground hip hop artists by reading this and watching the video. Expand your repertoire and mind frame by absorbing some new conscious underground hip hop.

Aesop Rock – Daylight
Ariano – R.I.P To The Radio
Atmosphere – Smart Went Crazy
Brother Ali – Self Taught
Cormega – Distributing It
Cunning Linguists – Thugged Out Since Cub Scouts
East Coast Avengers – East Coast Avenge
Del The Funkee Homosapien – Clint Eastwood
King Syze – Nonbelievers
Louis Logic – Rock(Remix)
MC Chris – Hijack
Murs – Everything
Swollen Members – Pressure
Jedi Mind Tricks Presents: Army of the Pharaohs – Dump The Clip
Jedi Mind Tricks Presents: Army of the Pharaohs – Seven
Zion I – Trigger
Zion I – Takeover

Best Underground Hip Hop of 2008

Check out these underground hits from 2008. There are some real dope tracks up in there. Its worth it to check em all out.

Top 20 Underground Rap Songs

Below is a list of Top 20 Underground Rap Songs from the video above. There are some real good cuts in there. I for one don’t agree with the ICP track. I don’t like ICP and don’t think they deserve to be ranked among some of the other top 20 underground rap songs on this list. It is by no means an official list. It is just a list that someone decided to post on Youtube that I thought you all might find interesting. Post your top 20 below in the comment section.
ICP – Hokus Pokus
The Literates – Graff Life
Demigodz – Empire Strikes Back
Psychopathic Rydaz – Time 2 Ride
Jedi Mind Tricks – Untitled
Immortal Technique – Leaving The Past
Fort Minor and Celph Titled – S.C.O.M.
Necro – Who’s Your Daddy?
Jedi Mind Tricks – Raw is War
Jedi Mind Tricks Presents: Army of The Pharaohs – All Shall Perish

PDX Hip Hop – Animal Farm @ PDX-POP ‘09

Animal Farm at PDX-POP ‘09

The Sound Quality is horrible but that was a tight show for sure. PDX POP is an alright Portland Music Festival but its not as good as POH Hop when it comes to hip hop. PDX Hip Hop is all about good underground rap and alternative hip hop with a little bit of West Coast swagger thrown in. PDX POP is mostly all about pop music. Which in my book is pretty lame.

PDX Break Dance

Portland Break Dancers busting out in the streets of Portland, Oregon. PDX Hip Hop break dancers are some of the best on the west coast. The saturation of b-boys and b-girls at PSU is the main reason for it. There are a lot of people that either go to PSU or at least attend their break dancing events and they make up most of the local break dance scene.

Top Ten Underground Rap Songs

I don’t necessarily agree with all the songs on this video. But someone apparently does. They got a lot of views on Youtube, so without further ado… for the fans.

Top 10 Progressive Hip-Hop Artists

The Roots – “The Seed 2.0″

Top 10 Progressive Hip-Hop Artists

This is my list of Top 10 prominent Progressive Rap Artists

1. The Roots

The Roots have been the most successful vanguard rap group in the hip hop community for many years now. They are a complete live band able to shift from jazz to funk to hip hop to rock with the greatest of ease and skill. Their live shows are celebrations, clinics and testimonials to hip hop’s greatness. They have toured with 311, The Pixies, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Wilco, Outkast and Jurassic 5 to name a few. On their latest album, “Game Theory”, The Roots confront current issues in an intelligent and inspirational manor. The Roots are regarded as one of hip-hop’s all time greatest groups and when ranking progressive hip hop groups they are hands down number one.

2. Blackstar

Mos Def and Talib Kweli

Although both artists have had extensive solo careers and alone they both rank very high on the top ten progressive hip-hop artists list, Mos Def and Talib Kweli as the rap duo Blackstar are a force to be reckoned with.  By combining street rhymes and metaphors, beats courtesy of dj Hi-Tek (Talib Kweli’s partner in hip-hop group Reflection Eternal), Blackstar have been what the hip hop scene has needed. Equally progressive and impressive Blackstar ranks high among the top ten progressive rappers of all time for many reasons, mainly being their lyrics. In a time when so many rappers fall in line to the beat of the corporate music industries drum, Blackstar blazes their own trail to the beat of their own drum. Mos Def comes off as a hip hop Frank Sinatra at times to Talib Kweli’s Axl Rose (right down to the bandanna and leather jacket). No one knows when these two will get back together to record a sequel to their first album. The sooner Blackstar regroup the better and stronger progressive hip-hop will be.

3. Common

He is being touted as the Marvin Gaye of the hip hop community and for good reason. Common has been able to encapsulate his love for hip hop in his music but he often let’s that feeling become a metaphor for his love of Black people and the African American community. For Common it seems when hip hop is in trouble the community is in trouble. When hip hop is merely surviving the community merely survives and when the community is living up to its potential so is hip hop. Common has had a few miss-steps in his career but his last album “Be” (produced by Kanye West) showed off his potential as an artist and a story teller. The hope is, in 2007 Common will have more illuminating things to say and more stories to tell.

4. Jurassic 5

South LA has been the home of some great underground hip-hop artists and Jurassic 5 is one of the best of the backpack, rap pack. With two djs and four mc’s J-5 mix powerful, funky beats, syncopated rhymes, barbershop styled vocals and even singing into their brand of hip hop. They have a positive attitude and they have truly created a multiracial army of fans both in the US and over seas. Although this year they lost dj Cut Chemist they gained more praise and radio airplay thanks to their latest disc “Feedback” and the single “Work it Out”. While only ranked number four on our list and actually containing six members, Jurassic 5 has earned their place among other great progressive hip-hop groups.

5. Atmosphere

Atmosphere is made of DJ/producer Ant and rapper Slug. Their music is introspective and progressive and at times hyper emotional. Although they may cringe at the label “emo” (short for hyper emotional) rap that they have been saddled with, Slug is an amazingly charismatic emcee who has been able to rap about his ex-girlfriend “Lucy”, becoming a father, his current girlfriend and a tragic rape that took place at one of his shows among a multitude of other artistic themes. He is able to do it all against a back drop of old school beats and new school musicality. You have to admire and respect an mc that can spit knowledge about Public Enemy, KRS-One, Bad Religion and Sunny Day Real Estate all on the same album. Atmosphere is number five on our list which is an admirable rank. They would have ranked higher if not for the prejudice I have for their emo songs. I am not a big fan of emo rap, progressive or not. Sorry Slug.

6. Dilated Peoples

DJ Babu (producer/DJ), Evidence (emcee-producer) and Rakaa Iriscience make up the members of LA hip-hop group Dilated Peoples. There is no doubt Dilated Peoples are about REAL hip hop all the way. Lyricists Evidence and Ira Science are an amazing hip-hop tag team on stage and on wax. They summon the spirit of early Run-DMC shows in the live setting. They are backed by the nimble fingered turntablist dj Babu who keeps the energy of their live shows flowing with his funky beats, cuts and scratches. They rank high on our list for their unique and progressive style of hip-hop which has been a front runner of the alternative hip-hop movement of the mid to late 2000’s.

7. Lupe Fiasco

You have to give any rapper props for writing a song about the virtues of skateboarding and then releasing that same song as the first single on his debut album (Kick Push). Lupe Fiasco is a subtle story teller and his first album, “Food and Liquor” is an introspective manifesto set to potent, funky beats. Fiasco was thought to be the next Jay-Z but with his inward sounding, thoughtful lyrics, many music critics are already labeling him hip-hop’s Morrissey and that just may be what the art form needs. Lupe Fiasco stands alone as one of the most unique modern progressive rap artists. With the combination of his subversive lyrics, alternative style and inventive imagination Lupe Fiasco will maintain as one of the top ten progressive rappers of all time.

8. Blackalicious

Producer Chief Xcel and lyricist The Gift of Gab make a remarkable tag team as Blackalicious. The duo(who are sometimes joined by rapper Lateef the Truth Speaker) serve up street smart battle raps and rhymes and when they are not trying to wax philosophical in their live shows, they wow the audience by rapping the alphabet and all of the elements on the periodic table!

9. Sage Francis

When it comes to political manifestos no one hits harder than Sage Frances. The “Sage” is ready to have fists raised in the air as he takes his cues from Public Enemy’s Chuck D is a bonafide rap rebel rouser. Along with political diatribes Francis can also mix in punk/alternative rock references. Francis brings it all together for a perfect balance on his last release “A Healthy Distrust” when he exclaims, “never mind the bullocks my pistol is a sex machine!”

10. MF Doom

While MF Doom is one of the most unique mcs in the genre today, he has recently lost a lot of respect among fans for reportedly using doubles in concert. These body doubles simply wear his famous mask and lip sink to his songs. That is one of the worst things any rapper could ever do. First of all for lip sinking but more importantly for deceiving his fans. His live performances aren’t all that great anyway. It sounds great on his CD’s but in concert it doesn’t come off nearly as good. That being said MF Doom is great on his albums, and his lyrics alone earned him a spot on our list despite his deceptive behavior as of late. Doom is known as the man behind the mask mainly because he conducts interviews and live shows wearing a mask reminiscent of the Bobbafet character in the Star Wars saga. On his latest disc (produced by Gnarls Barkley wiz kid Danger Mouse) Doom serves up serious beats and rhymes about old school cartoons, the king of the sofa, Space Ghost and he takes the idea of “keeping it real” to a whole other level by rapping about vats of urine. Doom has a great way with words, excellent flow and an amazing sense of humor. After live shows and appearances he leaves fans asking the same question, “who was that masked man?”

Northwest Hip Hop Videos – Jake One – POH Hop – PDX Hip Hop

Jake One “HOME” Music Video

Another great track from the hit Seattle producer, Jake One aka “Jake Uno”.

Director/DP/Editor: Zia Mohajerjasbi
Produced By: Justin Pinder, Zia Mohajerjasbi, Sam Toloui, Steve Failows

From Jake One:

“Finally, I’m happy to present the video to my tribute to Seattle, “Home”. The song features MC’s Vitamin D, Note, Maneak B and Ish, who have all been big influences in my music. Sir Mix a Lot brought out his orange Lambo and Nate Burleson repped the town and the Seahawks as well. Super Director Zia did a phemomenal job creating the perfect visual for the music and now its time for the world to see it.”

Cool Nutz POH Hop Mission Statement

The Portland Oregon Hip-Hop Festival (POH-Hop) has been a monumental and historic event from the time of it’s creation in 1995. David Parks, Steven Spyryt, and Terrance Scott had a vision to create an event that gave local hip-hop artists an outlet to expose their art to the masses.

With the support of the community and some of the cities music industry luminaries, POH-Hop exploded on the scene, and was successful even beyond the expectations of its creators and supporters. Over the past 11 years, POH-Hop has featured some of the most talented local artists, as well as national stars like The Luniz, Spearhead, Mistah FAB, One Be Lo, Mac Dre, Ras Kass, Andre Nickatina, and more.

Not only has POH-Hop benefited local artists in the form of exposure, POH-Hop has also raised and donated funds to The Black Education Center and KBOO Community Radio.

Guru of Gang Star Dead at 43

4/19/2010 Guru Dead At 43

Guru DeadJoin The Conversation: Post A Comment

Gang Starr Member and Legendary Hip Hop Artist Guru Dies at Age 43 (04-19-2010)

The legendary rapper succumbed to cancer on Monday the 19th of April after suffering a heart attack last month.

The talented and gifted hip-hop MC known as Guru, an acronym for “Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal”, died Monday at age 43. A letter reportedly written by the rapper was released Monday by his current collaborator, the DJ and producer Solar. In it he says: “I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world. I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options. I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life. I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting.”

born Keith Elam, rapper Guru founded Gang Starr in 1966 in Boston, Mass. One of the key groups during hip-hop’s “Golden Age” of the late ’80s and early ’90s. With Texas-born Chris Martin, aka DJ Premier, Guru brought a laid-back smooth flow and intellectual lyrics that distinguished the duo from other classic East Coast combos such as Public Enemy. Guru had moved to New York in 1983, then the epicenter of hip-hop, and with Premier created the signature Gang Starr track “Jazz Music,” which appeared on the duo’s 1989 debut album, “No More Mr. Nice Guy.”

Guru’s death-bed statement referred to Solar as “my loyal best friend, partner and brother,” and pointedly excluded Premier: “I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ.”

- Update 04-22-2010

Guru’s Sister: “He Never Regained Consciousness”

Recently Guru’s sister released a statement regarding circumstances surrounding her brothers death. She stated that while he was in the hospital, following his heart attack, that he was in a coma the whole time and never regained consciousness. If that is true then you must ask how was he able to release the statement reportedly given to Solar before his death. Many are speculating that Solar forged Guru’s Last Words.

Guru’s sister, Patricia Elam, released a statement to The Source today that gives credence to those who question the legitimacy of Guru’s alleged final letter to his fans and are alarmed by all of the conflicting information that’s been publicly released. In it she states: “The Elam family wishes to thank the fans of our son/brother/father uncle/nephew/cousin Keith aka GURU for the outpouring of love, concern and support. Our hearts are broken by the loss of someone we loved so much. GURU was devoted to his young son, who will most keenly feel his absence. GURU suffered from multiple myeloma for over a year. Accrued complications from this illness led to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. As a result, GURU was in a coma from mid February until his death and never regained consciousness. Early on the morning of April 19th, he became hypertensive due to low blood pressure. He again went into cardiac arrest and slipped away from us.”

Did Producer Solar Fake Rapper Guru’s Deathbed Letter?

The letter published on Allhiphop.com began respectfully enough so as not to raise any questions about its legitimacy:

“I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world. I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options.”

The letter continues and informs us of an aleged non-profit foundation for abused children, and that he was filled with tears of joy for the wonderful life that he lived.

Then the note takes an ugly turn which is where most of the speculation comes from. Rather than focusing on his legacy as an artist and reflecting on the life that he has lived it seems to turn into an endorsement for producer Solar. It also says some hurtful things about  Guru’s longtime partner in Gang Starr, DJ Premier:

“My loyal best friend, partner and brother, Solar, has been at my side through it all and has been made my health proxy by myself on all matters relating to myself. He has been with me by my side on my many hospital stays, operations, doctors visits and stayed with me at my home and cared for me when I could not care for myself…

I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ.”

Upon reading those last lines from his alleged death bed note most friends, family and fans were taken aback and have gone so far as to speculate that Guru did not write those words, rather that it was Solar.

Make your own assumptions, we may never know the truth. One thing is certain. It appears that Guru’s Sister doesn’t believe in the statement. And Guru’s Family is not aware of any foundations in his name.

Guru Died

Here is what other Hip-Hop News Sources are saying about Guru’s Death

Groundbreaking U.S. rapper and Gang Starr co-founder Guru died Monday night, a month after the cancer-stricken artist collapsed and went into a coma, MTV reported.

The 43-year-old rapper, whose real name is Keith Elam, had been suffering from cancer for over a year. The report quoted a statement from Guru’s camp that inferred the cause was complications from cancer.

“According to [producer] Solar, Guru suffered from the malicious illness for over a year and after numerous special treatments under the supervision of medical specialists failed, the legendary MC succumbed to the disease. Guru always tried to keep this harrowing diagnosis in private but in early 2010 he had to admit himself to hospital due to serious effects caused by the disease.”

Guru formed the group with DJ Premier in 1985, and they put out six albums, including the well-received “Daily Operation” and “Moment of Truth.”

Guru Dead at Age 43

Just over one month since undergoing surgery following a heart attack, Gang Starr MC Guru (born Keith Elam) has died at age 43. According to a statement, Guru died of cancer-related causes on Monday after a long fight with the disease.

Guru’s longtime friend and collaborator, Solar mourns his loss in the statement and explains that Guru had written a letter to his fans that was to be released upon his death.

“The world has lost one of the best MCs and hip-hop icons of all-time — my loyal best friend, partner, and brother, Guru,” Solar said. “Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it, but tragically, this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius.”

Born on July 17, 1966, near Boston, Guru rose to fame in the late 1980s as part of the duo Gang Starr with partner DJ Premier. The pair helped define the New York underground rap sound in the 1990s. Their unique sound combined Premier’s production palette, which leaned heavily on sampled jazz records and scratched vocals on the choruses, with Guru’s uncompromising rhymes. Although the pair would work separately as often as they did together — Guru’s Jazzmatazzseries of albums and Premier’s work with Nas, Jay-Z, and underground act Group Home — Gang Starr continued to release critically acclaimed material throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s.

Guru Dead

Guru wrote his farewell letter while in the hospital, according to Solar. “I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world,” it begins. “I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options.

“I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life. I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting.

“My loyal best friend, partner and brother, Solar, has been at my side through it all and has been made my health proxy by myself on all matters relating to myself. He has been with me by my side on my many hospital stays, operations, doctors visits and stayed with me at my home and cared for me when I could not care for myself. Solar and his family is my family and I love them dearly and I expect my family, friends, and fans to respect that, regardless to anybody’s feelings on the matter. It is my wish that counts. This being said I am survived by the love of my life, my sun KC, who I trust will be looked after by Solar and his family as their own. Any awards or tributes should be accepted, organized approved by Solar on behalf [of] myself and my son until he is of age to except on his own.”

Guru and DJ Premiere

Guru very pointedly distanced himself from Premier in the letter, saying he didn’t want his former musical collaborator to be able to participate in any tributes or events surrounding his death.

“I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events, tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this,” wrote Guru. “I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ.

“As the sole founder of Gang Starr, I am very proud of what Gang Starr has meant to the music world and fans. I equally am proud of my Jazzmatazz series and as the father of Hip-Hop/Jazz. I am most proud of my leadership and pioneering efforts on Jazzmatazz 4 for reinvigorating the Hip-Hop/Jazz genre in a time when music quality has reached an all time low. Solar and I have toured in places that I have never been before with Gang Starr or Jazzmatazz and we gained a reputation for being the best on the planet at Hip-Hop/Jazz, as well as the biggest and most influential Hip-Hop/Jazz record with Jazzmatazz 4 of the decade to now.

“The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time. And we as a team were not afraid to push the envelope. To me this is what true artists do! As men of honor we stood tall in the face of small-mindedness, greed, and ignorance. As we fought for music and integrity at the cost of not earning millions and for this I will always be happy and proud, and would like to thank the million fans who have seen us perform over the years from all over the world. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time and is my most creative and experimental to date. I hope that our music will receive the attention it deserves as it is some of the best work I have done and represents some of the best years of my life.”

At press time, Guru’s family — from whom he was reportedly estranged, along with other past associates — had not commented on his death, and last month his nephew Justin Nicholas-Elam Ruff posted several emotional videos on YouTube saying that Solar was preventing them from seeing the MC during his illness.

“Solar has completely cut us off. My family has no way of knowing what is going on with Guru’s situation,” he said in the video. “Solar has complete control over the flow of information given from the hospital and will not disclose any information to us. The doctors and the hospital staff will not discuss any info with Guru’s family.” Ruff said in one of the videos that no one in Guru’s family had not seen him since February 28, and that he was prevented from seeing Guru when he visited the hospital last month.

About Jake One

Jacob Dutton, better known as Jake One, is an American hip hop record producer from Seattle, Washington.

Dutton grew up in Capitol Hill and moved to the North End of Seattle when he was 15. He started making music on a Casio keyboard in 1992. He attended the University of Washington and gave a tape of his music to a friend who worked in a local record store. One of the store’s other employees, the DJ Mr. Supreme heard the tape, and when he set up his Conception Records label, he used Dutton to create backing tracks.[2] The first record he produced was Eclipse’s “World Premier”. His early influences included Pete Rock, DJ Premier, and Marley Marl.

He was a part of the G-Unit production team, The Money Management Group. He is now under Dr. Dre’s production team as of late 2008.

His first album credited to Jake One, White Van Music, was release on October 7, 2008 on Rhymesayers Entertainment, which features contributions from Brother Ali, Young Buck, De La Soul, M.O.P., Freeway, MF DOOM, Slug, and Keak Da Sneak.

He has had tracks included on the soundtracks to films such as Get Rich or Die Tryin’ (50 Cent’s “I Don’t Know Officer”), The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (“Jake Alert”), and Gone Baby Gone.

Jake One Speaks on D-Black

Jake One talks about the up and coming Seattle Rapper D.Black and how he came to work with Jake One.

About D.Black

D.Black has emerged as one of the Northwest’s hip-hop elite. The Seattle-based MC/Producer was mentored under Vitamin D and currently serves as the flagship artist for Seattle based Sportn’ Life Records. Most recently recognized for his appearance on Jake One’s White Van Music with the song “God Like“, D.Black’s sophisticated rhyme flow combined with his natural ability to fuse technically with producers sets him apart from his counterparts. D.Black delivers soul music that provokes feeling, thought and conversation. Ultimately, D.Black cares about his craft and it shows in his music.

Born in Seattle and raised in a hip-hop household, D.Black’s parents were in The Emerald Street Boys and The Emerald Street Girls, two of Seattle’s pioneering groups. He began making music at the young age of seven and over the years he gained the experience and tools necessary to maneuver his own career. Growing up with his labelmate Fatal Lucciauno, they both used music as a tool to escape the streets. He’s led an active life since high school, going to school, football practice, hitting the studio, performing live, and still having time for his faith and religion. Black is a firm believer in the Messianic Hebrew roots of Christianity and currently runs his own ministry. At the age of eighteen he was given part ownership of Sportn’ Life Records from his father as a birthday gift.

In 2006 D. Black dropped his critically acclaimed debut CD The Cause & Effect, which was a huge regional success. His music, drive, and dynamic stage show proved him to be an unsurpassed talent and huge factor in the Seattle music scene. Fans have grown and given huge support, and local press has definitely caught on. He was invited to perform at some of the region’s most esteemed music festivals such as Bumbershoot and The Capitol Hill Block Party. D.Black’s stageshow is crazy, and he’s shared the stage with some of raps biggest names such as; Nas, Freeway, Bun B, Clipse, Paul Wall, and The Boot Camp Click to name a few.

D.Black and Sportn’ Life Records have partnered with the Bay Area based MYX Music label and together, they are preparing for the September 15th, 2009 release of D. Black’s highly anticipated sophomore project Ali’Yah. The title is Hebrew meaning “to ascend.” The album is chock-full of superior production from the likes of Jake One and Vitamin D, along with Seattle up and comers B.Brown, Kuddie Mack, GMK and D.Black himself. Ali’Yah is a far departure from Black’s debut as this project showcases a more mature emcee. It’s a very inspirational CD, both musically and conceptually.
