Def Jux Is Shutting Down

Def Jux, the seminal indie hip-hop label that’s been home to Aesop Rock, Murs, Cannibal Ox, Cage, Mr. Lif, and RJD2 over a decade in business, is shutting down, according to founder El-P. In a statement released on the label’s website, El-P explains he’ll be focusing full time on producing and recording, and that Def Jux will have a vaguely imagined rebirth, but that “as a traditional record label DEF JUX will effectively be put on hiatus.” … Read More…

El-P Puts Def Jux On Hiatus, Focuses On Music

Amidst rapidly-growing rumors that Definitive Jux was closing down, founder and Artistic Director of the label, El-P, brought clarity to the situation on its web site.

“Reports of our demise have been mildly exaggerated,” explained the acclaimed producer. “This year, a decade after starting DEF JUX and after overseeing the releases of some incredible albums including the forthcoming release of my dear late and great friend Camu Tao’s brilliant KING OF HEARTS LP, I’m stepping away from my duties as artistic director for the label to concentrate on what I love most: being a producer and an artist full time. This is something I’ve been contemplating for a few years now, and can’t think of a better time or, with the eventual release of Camu’s record, a more poetic way to transition into a new direction.”

El-P revealed that the label’s web site, as well as sales of its catalog and merchandise would remain in tact. In addition, a Def Jux compilation titled King of Hearts, “a 10 year anniversary retrospective and some other goodies,” will be released. However, the actual record label Def Jux will be “put on hiatus.”

“We are not closing, but we are changing. The process is already underway, and the last several months (for those wondering what the hell we’ve been up to) have been spent dealing with the technical aspects of wrapping up the label in it’s current form and re-imagining our collective and individual futures,” elaborated El-P.

Portland’s Top 40 Hits / Hip Hop Radio Station Jammin 107.5 announced March 17th, 2010 their re-branded name WiLD 107.5.

Their former website www.jamminfm.com now redirects to www.wild1075portland.com

The question on everyone’s mind is “what will they play one WiLD 107.5?” The answer is obvious: WiLD 107.5 will play the exact same music that Jammin 107.5 played. Top 40 Party Hits. The change is welcome to many Portland radio listeners who have been listening to a so called hip hop radio station that plays 10 lady gaga songs every hour. Welcome WiLD 107.5 to the millions of top 40 party hit radio stations that advertise themselves as such instead of hiding behind their former glory of real hip hop radio stations.

The news came as somewhat of a surprise to many listeners. Clear Channel’s KXJM, which until this morning was known as “Jammin 107.5,” is now “Wild 107.5.” The station remains a mix of hip-hop and pop, and so far continues to hold the KXJM call letters. Their new slogan is “Portland’s Party Hits.”

The flip from Jammin to Wild was unceremonious as far as changeovers go. At the end of morning DJ Dreena Gonzalez’ shift, she called the station “Jammin 107.5,” followed by Timbaland’s “Carry Out.” This apparent carrying out of the old identity was at 10 am. Next came LMFAO’s “La La La,” in which the singer’s “heart went wild,” topped off with imaging for “Wild 107.5.”

If you weren’t paying attention, you may not have noticed the change. Mainly because the music selection hasn’t changed at all. It is just a name and image change that took place. It is still the same organization and the same DJ’s/Hosts. Clear Channel has many other radio stations across the US that already use the name WiLD. So it comes as no surprise that they changed the Portland radio stations name now.

wild1075radioWhat can be expected from this change? One thing is for certain. They used to claim to be “hits and hip hop” now their tag line says “Portland’s Party Hits” which will probably mean less hip hop. Or to be more accurate the new branding now actually represents the music that they play since they haven’t played much hip hop since the first year they started the station in the early 2000’s when it was still on 95.5 (Now “The Game” sports talk radio).

Stay tuned for more information/news about WiLD 107.5 Portland’s Party Hits radio station. WiLD 107.5 will still be broadcasting Cool Nutz “Northwest Breakout Show”, Portland’s only real hip hop radio show still around. RIP to the rest, keep hip hop alive on the airwaves in Portland Cool Nutz! WiLD 107.5 is our last beacon of hope.

The picture painting of Ghostface mixed with the lyrical dexterity of MF DOOM mixed with Biggie’s weird and halting virtuoso breath control. Snoop Dogg and The Dogg Pound performed in front of a sold out crowd on Thursday March 4th 2010 at the Roseland Theater in Downtown Portland, Oregon. The dank smoke in the building was so think you could literally take a hit from the air surrounding your face space. Earlier in the night they played the Making of Malice video on a huge projector center stage. Personally I was stoked to see Daz and Kurupt there.

I was willing to buy Lonely Island as a short-form SNL video group, but now that they’ve got a full-length album coming out (titled Incredibad, out tomorrow via Universal), the group’s starting to wear on me. “Jizz In My Pants” was pretty funny, “I’m In A Boat” featuring T-Pain less so, and now there’s this less-than-funny song, titled “Boombox” featuring Julian Casablancas of the Strokes singing about old people dancing to songs from a boombox, and then deciding to get freaky (which, as Casablancas says, is totally nasty).

“Boombox” might have worked better as a clip on SNL, but as far as just audio goes, it’s worse than pretty much all of Lonely Island’s output so far (it’s way too obvious, and is kind of trite), and less funny than anything by Flight of the Conchords, who are Lonely Island’s unofficial competition.

Concert review: Jay-Z at American Airlines Center

Jay-Z commands a stage. The influential rapper performed for 12,000 fans Tuesday night at American Airlines Center, bringing with him a full band including a horn section, percussionist and DJ.

A skyscraper-like light display at the back of the stage immediately looked like the New York skyline, a nod to his hometown, of course. A variety of images were projected throughout the two-hour show, making it all the more striking.

After serving six years in prison, New Orleans rapper Mystikal vows to help C-Murder (Corey Miller aka C. Miller) with his legal issues stemming from his 2009 murder conviction, saying, “I can’t let him sit in there like that.”
