Rap Is More than Music

Rap Is More than Music
by: All The Lyrics

This is a style that stays aside all the other music trends. Not aside, but somewhat deeper. The reason is it is a reflection of the race, the plurality of people united by roots and origin. Rap is the culture of Afro-Americans, the continuation of their language and traditions. Rap is a mixture of speech and music, actually it is speech laid on music

Are you looking for the best new hip hop songs? Whether it’s mainstream, underground rap, old school, gangsta or the Dirty South, here’s where you’ll find the hottest new hip hop songs to listen to, or download to your computer.

Hip Hop Radio Stations

Admittedly, the Internet has taken a bite out of local radio stations credibility, yet they still remain important when you want the hot new music. Here’s a list of hip-hop and R&B stations as well is a few Internet radio alternatives…

Power106.  Anyone who’s listener this radio station knows it is the source for new rap songs. The Power features well known mainstream artists like Kanye West, The Game and 50 Cent.

Hot 97. They claim to be hip hop, nobody’s gonna argue with that claim. Check out their nationally syndicated programs; you won’t be disappointed.

Power 105. Though it used to play soft rock, Power 105 made the move to hip hop and R&B, including old school golden tracks and freestyles from up and coming underground rappers.

IMEEM.   With IMEEM, You can essentially create your own mix tape in a matter of minutes. Listeners can search the huge database of music, save their playlists, and share those playlists with others on the websites social networking platform.

Pandora. I used to adore all the time searching for new hip hop songs. Simply visit their website and enter in the name of your favorite hip-hop group; Pandora will serve up your own personal radio station filled with similar artists based on lyrical and musical styles. You can vote each track up or down, and Pandora will increase or decrease the frequency of that song in your playlist according. If I’m anywhere near my laptop, there’s a good chance Pandora is playing the background.

MixTapes

If you’re looking for new hip hop songs that are spotted a different way, be sure to check out the following websites and their mix tapes…

DatPiff.   And your limitless supply of mix tapes, most of which are very high quality. Definitely a resource for anyone interested in picking up the hottest new mix tapes.

ThatCrack. While their selection may be smaller than DatPiff, they don’t slack on quality: these are some of the highest mix tapes I’ve ever heard.

I’ll use these radio stations and websites to track down the rap songs from a wide variety of genres. It’s a great way to expose yourself to new artists for free!

Buying rap beats online is quickly growing and it’s great to use the internet to bring talented producers and artists from different parts of the world together. However, like with any game, there are some players who do things right, and others who don’t. We’ve therefore compiled this simple list of tips for buying rap beats online in order to help aspiring artists out there pick the right website/producers to work with.

We now have four years experience selling rap beats online through our website, www.LaCantinaProductions.com and we hope that these tips will prove useful to you!

1. Music Licenses – Understand them

Know the difference between exclusive and non-exclusive licenses. An exclusive license will grant you the exclusive (hence the name) right to use the beats for your projects.

A non-exclusive license will give you the right to use the beat for your musical projects, however the producer retains the right to sell the beat to other artists too.

2. Music Licenses – Know which one to buy

Exclusive licenses can be expensive, but essential if you’re looking to commercially release an album. If you’re however recording a demo or mixtape, a non-exclusive license is fine, however make sure you check with the producer what rights you get as these will vary from site to site.

3. Prices, don’t pay too much!

Owners of beat sites often get carried away by their big ego’s and will charge inflated prices for standard beats.

A rough guideline for prices follows:

Non-Exclusive Licenses – $15 – $50

Exclusive Licenses – $100 – $1000

Of course, the above prices depend on the producer’s popularity and talent. However, we would not recommend paying more than $1000 for an exclusive license bought online from someone you have never met in person.

4. Websites, only buy from trusted ones

Any proper online business will make sure they have a trustworthy image. Therefore make sure that the site you’re buying from has at least one or two of these:

- Full contact details, phone number, email, mailing address

- Privacy Policy

5. Look for trust symbols

On top of the above, the website should also have third party trust symbols. These are certifications from other companies that prove the website is trustworthy and not fraudulent.

Some symbols to look for are:

- BBB Certification

- Paypal Verified

- Shopping reviews

- Hacker Safety Certifications

- Antivirus Safety Certifications

Also make sure these symbols link through to another page that explains what they mean and how the website in question fits the criteria.

6. Email the site and check if they reply

Crazy, but certain beat sites will not bother doing this. Would you want to do business with someone who doesn’t care about talking to you?

Also, this will prove that the website is a serious online business with a team of human beings running it properly.

7. Look for testimonials

This is not essential, but it’s always good if you can see that others have dealt with the site before and have been satisifed with their beats.

8. Avoid producers who only use a Soundclick/MySpace page to sell beats

A domain name costs less than $15 a year, surely it’s not a good sign if someone doesn’t even have the money to buy that and set up their own independent website?

9. Search for the site on Google

This is a quick easy way to check a site’s reputation. Do any bad comments show up, or anything else unusual?

10. Is the site alive?

Does anyone update it or is it dead? We’re all very busy making beats, but adding some small updates once in a while is within everyone’s reach. Therefore look for blog posts, new beat uploads and even small updates such as changing the current year noted on the site!

XXL Top 100 Hip-Hop Websites: Brushes With Fame

Posted on 29 November 2009 by B-Double (10)

xxl_logo1

Even though the list was announced a while ago, the hard copy of XXL’s latest issue, featuring the top 100 hip-hop blog sites, hit the racks this week.  Its a pretty good list – much more authentic than the widely dismissed VIBE list from a number of months earlier – and there are a lot of great sites that made it.

I am privileged to have chopped it up with a number of the good people on that list and I wanted to bust a few words on them – given how little XXL said on some of them.

Daily Mathematics

Combat Jack is a consummate hip-hop insider and a practicing attorney, so you know dude is no joke.  Forget the press releases from PR hacks, I love reading about his run-ins with famous rappers and industry honchos.  The best part about CJ is that he’s actually a real dude – never hesitates to drop in here at YFWB and lay down a comment, even though he doesn’t know me from Adam.  He recently got a gig applying his rap hustle at XXL Magazine itself, and for frequent readers of Daily Math, its not  a surprise.

Dallas Penn

Dallas is a hilarious writer/videographer/blogger, and he was kind enough to hit YFWB with a complement that now graces this site.  But behind all the jokes and gags, Dallas is a true hip-hop head who understands his rap history and appreciates those who respect it.  He gave me some great advice about writing on this here blog, which shows the kind of guy he is – building with other bloggers to make a better community.

The Rap Up

Rizoh over at TRU is hands down one of the realest dudes I have ever met since I started blogging.  Even though he is one of the original hip-hop bloggers, Rizoh is the most unassuming and friendly cats I’ve had the privilege of dealing with.  And the man knows his hip-hop, boy.  He also happens to be a social media ninja.  You want to know how to conquer Digg?  He’s the guy to talk to.  Learned much from “The Blogfather”.

Its The Real

The Rosenthal Brothers were kind enough to sit down for one of my first interviews.  I was a fan, I reached out and they were happy to oblige.  Its been dope to watch them take off and go from an ill concept to being known in the industry.  And their videos are still well done.   Still not sure why they never followed me on Twitter, though.  Still sore about that.

Looking for new hip hop music? Whether it’s underground rap, R&B, Southern hip-hop or gangster rap, here’s some of the hottest places to find new hip hop music.

Radio Stations

While they may have lost some of their influence in the past few years due to Internet, radio stations still provide a great place to hear it music. I’ve included a standard radio stations as wills a few of their Internet counterparts…

Power106. Arguably the largest name in rap music today Power 106 plays at established artists such as Eminem, and Lil Wayne, as well as up and coming rap superstars like Drake, and Flo Rida.

Hot97.One of the most popular hip hop stations in history, Hot97 delivers fresh tracks from artists such as T.I., Outkast and Kanye West.

Power 105. They made the move from soft rock and never looked back In addition to fresh new music, they play old school hip and R&B

IMEEM.  This website lets you create your own playlist from their gigantic database of music. You can save your playlists and share with others via the social network on their site. The new hip hop music section is on point, and offers a selection of new artists daily.

Pandora. Personally I love this site. To all you have to do is entering the name of your favorite artist, song or musical style and Pandora automatically creates a playlist for you based upon associated artists they think you would like. I can’t even begin to explain how any great to rap artists I’ve discovered using the site. Pandora also offers you the chance to vote on each song as the play, and will shift its playlist accordingly. If you’re looking to find a hottest new music as well as underground tracks you may have missed the first time around, Pandora is certainly a place to start.

MixTapes

Mixed tapes have always been an important part of hip-hop culture, and the following two websites let you hear your favorite songs put together a new and exciting ways…

It was born in New York, then it began to travel across the country to hit California with groups like N.W.A. taking it and making it their own; what we are talking about is hip-hop. Hip Hop download resources are abundant online, yet some are slow and unsafe. Here’s a list of places you can find hip hop downloads for a rap beats, albums, singles and mixtapes for cheap…

Mp3.com. This website offers legal downloads of your favorite hip hop artists, songs and the top new releases. While not solely focused on the rap genre, it does offer an extensive selection of artists; plus, you can always pick up a George Clinton album while you’re there!

EZ-Tracks is another hip hop download resource worth its weight in gold. Most of their tracks are free, meaning you can explore a wide variety of sub-genres in hip hop without breaking the bank. Admittedly, they tend to focus on mainstream rappers and singers, which makes it hard to find solid underground hip hop artists, though their popular selection is quite varied. For underground artists, I recommend the following source…

Internet radio is a great way to find new music, and doesn’t require any downloads. My personal favorite is Pandora; simply enter in the name of an artist, song or keyword and Pandora serves up a playlist of groups it thinks you would be interested in. You can vote each song up or down as its played, and Pandora adjusts its recommendations accordingly. I’ve found tons of great new artists using this website!

For the best selection in mixtapes, top instrumentals and beats, check out RapGodfathers. Not only can you download those underground hits you’ve been searching for, there’s a huge selection of mixtapes and remixes of classic tracks you’ve never even heard of. I highly recommend this site for anyone in search of some under the radar tracks. They also have an impressive selection of videos, including major record releases to those that never made it to MTV.

Remember to check out the legal aspect of any hip hop download. While many claim it is legal, some are copyright infringement. Others, such as Pandora, have negotiated a special license that allows them to play a certain number of songs for a listener per hour. This prevents hackers from downloading every song imaginable from an artist (at least in theory) while providing the artist with exposure they would not have had otherwise. The ones mentioned here are legal, safe and fast: stick to these and you should have no worries about picking up your favorite rap artists top new beats, music and videos.

Hip Hop websites are abundant, but which ones are the best? While some focus on underground rap, others specialize in recording artist mixtapes, provide up to date news on music, or represent fashion in the community. Here’s the offical list of hip hop websites that deserve honors:

Beats365. This is the premiere location for anyone looking for rap beats. While they aren’t cheap, this website offers premium, professionally produced rap instrumentals in bulk (meaning you don’t have to pay for the beats one at a time).

AllHipHop. This website is the broadest representation of the culture online. They’ve got forums for music fans, news coverage, underground rap discussion boards, business directory, and dozens of other areas for heads to talk, share ideas and battle. Besides these message boards, there are places for rap artists to sharpen their skills. Rappers can post their verses, ask for feedback and advice and set up rap battle tournaments online.

HipHopGossipSite is your one stop shop for gossip. It’s packed with juicy bits about celebrities, rappers and DJs. This site is managed and written by NYC Gossip Girl, a talented and prominent figure in the New York scene. This is the place to go to for fashion, videos, rumors and stories about your favorite celebrities!

UnderGroundHipHop. This is the place for anyone interested in underground rap. While not as large as other hip hop websites, UGH certainly dives deep into the underground. It provides reviews of rappers, new album releases and discussions on names you may never have heard before- but should. This site is definitely worth checking out.

Mike’s Moves. This is the site for anyone looking to master their break dancing. It also offers dance lessons on specific moves such as the moonwalk.  They start with the basics steps, such as  toe tap, and then show how to incorporate those moves into your dance routine. At the time of writing, all these lessons were offered free of charge.

So there you have it: a list of the best hip hop websites out there today. While other websites will come and go, these are established experts in their fields, and aren’t going anywhere any time soon. It’s important to practice your skills, whether as a rapper, dancer or MC; this practice will help keep hip hop alive in the world today. Check them out and see for yourself; you’ll certainly be glad you did!
